Versatile Mage: The Young Master of Zhou Family

Chapter 56: Plague Outbreak

"Zhou Haoyu, where are you right now?"

Facing Lingling's question on the phone, Zhou Haoyu answered honestly, "In Hangzhou City. What's wrong?"

"What are you doing in Hangzhou?"

Lingling obviously paused, then said, "There's suddenly a plague outbreak there for some unknown reason. Anyway, it's extremely dangerous, hurry up and leave."

"This plague came too suddenly. Plus, according to those books, Totems have always been guardians of humanity. It's unlikely they would actively harm people. I think there's probably something fishy going on behind this." Zhou Haoyu said methodically.

"So you're planning to investigate this? There might be some big figures involved—you'd better not be an egg trying to crack a rock."

"Lingling, I think there are some things that must be done."

Zhou Haoyu's tone was exceptionally determined, leaving Lingling on the other end of the phone dumbfounded.

Was this really the Zhou Haoyu she knew?

"Even so, you can't act on your own. Wait for me to arrive in Hangzhou first."

Zhou Haoyu agreed immediately. Lingling always loved excitement and adventure—how could she possibly refuse something like this?

That afternoon, Zhou Haoyu picked up Lingling at the train station.

Her big dark eyes were glaring at Zhou Haoyu, and her twin ponytails were bouncing behind her—so adorably cute.

"Lingling, actually I could handle it alone. You didn't need to make a special trip." Zhou Haoyu habitually pinched Lingling's cheeks—soft and tender.

Lingling shot him a fierce glare. This guy was decent in other aspects, but he always liked to touch.

Seeing Lingling puffing up, Zhou Haoyu had to retract his hand.

"You? If you don't bury yourself in this, it would already be good enough." Lingling said disdainfully.

Zhou Haoyu shrugged. When doing tasks, Lingling indeed acted like his external brain—but that was only because he hadn't fully exerted himself, okay!

"Back to business. According to my investigation, the plague first appeared in Baizhen. Maybe we should start there." Zhou Haoyu said.

Now that the plague had broken out, this huge train station had only a handful of people.

"Hmm, Baizhen might really have clues. As long as we can find the source of this plague, it can be resolved." Lingling agreed.

"Right, check whether Baizhen has a place that stores Blood Serum." Zhou Haoyu suddenly said.

He remembered very clearly—the root of this plague came from a batch of Blood Serums contaminated with the infected blood of Rending-Claw Plague Rats.

And the one pulling the strings behind it all was Councilman Luo Mian, with even a Deputy Inquisitor from the Holy Judgment Court involved.

"Blood Serum?" Lingling blinked in confusion. "I can check it, but why do you want info on that?"

"Don't you think the plague is spreading abnormally fast, and it just happens to start in a remote township like Baizhen?" Zhou Haoyu said.

"So you suspect it's related to Blood Serum?"

"Just a guess."

Lingling was speechless—this guy's thinking was always so jumpy. Still, it did provide a direction.

If someone tampered with Blood Serum, a rapidly spreading plague was indeed possible.

Lingling took a small laptop from her backpack. After typing for a while, she locked onto the storage location in Baizhen.

"There's a military depot in Baizhen storing medical agents—and it's quite large."

Lingling looked up from the screen toward Zhou Haoyu. "Now that we've located it, what's your plan?"

"Simple—we'll just go in and take it." Zhou Haoyu said.

Baizhen.

After entering the town, Zhou Haoyu and Lingling headed straight to the military depot storing Blood Serum. At this time, guards were stationed all around.

Blood Serum was an extremely important strategic resource related to the lives of every military mage.

Even so, parasites like Luo Mian actually dared to tamper with Blood Serum—ten million deaths wouldn't be enough to pay.

"With so many guards, how are you going to get in?" Lingling frowned.

"I have my ways."

With that, Zhou Haoyu instantly disappeared from Lingling's sight with a Blink, reappearing outside the warehouse of the military depot.

Thanks to his Spiritual Force, he was able to perform such long-distance teleportation.

Four guards were stationed outside the warehouse, all of them Intermediate Mages.

With Zhou Haoyu's strength, he could have easily killed all four in an instant, but if he did, that would constitute a serious violation of the rules.

Although such a violation was trivial compared to the merit he would gain from uncovering the source of the plague, it would still be a blemish on his record.

He had a simpler and more direct way.

The moment his gaze focused, Zhou Haoyu directly used Spiritual Force to disrupt the four men's consciousness.

Although it was his first time using Illusion Art, interfering with the minds of four Intermediate Mages wasn't difficult.

"Lord Luo Mian, why are you here?"

In the illusion, the four men mistook Zhou Haoyu for Councilman Luo Mian.

"The Western Fortress is short on a batch of Blood Serum. I'm here to collect some." Zhou Haoyu said.

The four felt a flicker of suspicion—did an actual councilman need to personally come retrieve Blood Serum?

But under Zhou Haoyu's mental interference, they didn't think too much and obediently handed over the keys.

Zhou Haoyu immediately unlocked the warehouse and stored a batch of Blood Serum inside his space ring.

"You four are diligent and responsible. I'll find a chance to transfer you to the city in the future." Zhou Haoyu drew a big pie for them.

The four were overjoyed. Compared to guarding some small town, they naturally wanted a better post.

After placating them, Zhou Haoyu Blinked back to Lingling's side.

Lingling was startled when Zhou Haoyu suddenly appeared behind her and scolded, full of displeasure, "Can you not suddenly pop up behind me? It's scary, okay?!"

"So you can be frightened too? I thought you weren't scared of anything." Zhou Haoyu said in surprise.

In the three years they had known each other, Lingling had always acted like a mentally mature adult, never showing fear or panic even when facing demons.

Lingling rolled her eyes. If the guards discovered her, she'd definitely be grounded.

"Judging by your smug face, I guess you got it?" Lingling said irritably.

"Of course."

Zhou Haoyu pulled a bag of Blood Serum from his space ring and handed it to Lingling.

Lingling checked it briefly and found no difference in appearance from normal Blood Serum.

"Looks normal from the outside, but we'll need to test the ingredients to be sure." Lingling said.

"Time waits for no one. The sooner we identify what's inside, the more people we can save." Zhou Haoyu said.

Lingling gave Zhou Haoyu a few odd looks—why was this guy being so proactive?

Almost suspiciously proactive.
