Vampire Overlord's Harem In The Apocalypse

Chapter 23: Clearing The Mansion (V)

As the last of the zombies collapsed to the floor, face-first into the dust, Simon took a deep breath.

Silence settled over the room, broken only by the distant hum of the wind outside.

The scurrying of undead feet, the groans of the infected, the sounds of chaos — those had all disappeared.

Now, all that remained was the stench of rot and the heavy weight of exhaustion. Simon stood still for a moment, letting the stillness wash over him.

Behind him, the woman gasped for air. Her chest rose and fell with each breath, her body trembling slightly.

She'd just killed a zombie on her own, and while it had been terrifying, it had also felt… exhilarating.

There was something strangely empowering about it, a rush she wasn't sure how to handle. But she didn't have time to process that feeling now. The job wasn't finished.

"We need to get rid of the bodies," Simon said, his voice steady but edged with irritation. The smell of rotting flesh filled the air, and he wrinkled his nose in disgust. "We'll dump them outside or something."

Without waiting for a response, Simon grabbed the corpse of the zombie he'd just killed by the arms and hoisted it up.

The weight was something he'd grown accustomed to. It was heavy, but not unbearable.

His eyes scanned the room, eventually landing on the open window in the corner. It was wide, the curtains fluttering slightly in the breeze, and below, the streets were eerily empty.

Simon knew they couldn't afford to keep these bodies inside for long. The smell would only get worse, and they didn't need to attract any unwanted attention.

He moved quickly, dragging the zombie over to the window and tossing it out.

The body flew through the air and hit the ground below with a sickening splash, blood and brain matter spraying outward. The sound of the impact echoed briefly before everything fell silent again.

The woman watched him, still catching her breath, before she turned to deal with her own kill.

She had made some progress getting used to her newfound strength, but lifting a body like this was still a challenge.

Her muscles strained as she struggled to find a good grip, unsure of her own power.

Eventually, she managed to hoist the zombie up and moved toward the window. It was a bit of a struggle, but after a few seconds, she was ready.

With a grunt, she threw the body out of the window. It landed far below with a soft pop, the flesh giving way to the impact.

A few drops of blood splattered against the side of the building, but the street below seemed to swallow the noise. She wiped her hands on her pants, feeling the adrenaline still coursing through her veins.

She glanced over at Simon, her brow furrowed in thought. The tension in the air hadn't dissipated yet. "But seriously," she asked, her voice laced with curiosity, "why are we staying in such a big mansion? Won't that make it easier for people to find us?"

Simon paused for a moment, looking over at her with a small shrug. His eyes were calculating, thoughtful.

He didn't miss a beat as he began to walk toward the door, signaling for her to follow him.

"We aren't hiding," he said, his tone casual. "It's kind of reverse psychology, actually." He glanced back at her, noticing the confused look on her face. "Think about it — would you expect anyone to hide in a mansion this big?"

The woman blinked, still trying to process the idea. She looked around the large, empty rooms, the winding corridors, and towering ceilings.

"Well, no," she admitted after a pause. "I guess I wouldn't."

"That's the point," Simon continued, walking with purpose as he made his way to the next room. "No one would expect us to be here. The last thing anyone thinks when they're looking for survivors is that someone would be holed up in a mansion. Especially now, when it's every man for himself. People are more likely to go after smaller, more hidden places."

The woman followed him, still unsure. "But won't they think we're hiding here, anyway? It's a big place. We could get lost in it."

Simon chuckled softly, turning to face her. "That's exactly why it works. If someone actually manages to find their way here, they'll have no idea where to look. There are too many rooms, too many hallways. They'll be confused, and we can use that to our advantage."

He stopped walking and turned back to face her, his expression growing more serious. "We can make this place work for us. It's not just about hiding; it's about setting traps. We use the size of the mansion against anyone who comes here. They'll be so busy trying to figure out where we are that they won't realize we've already got the upper hand."

The woman's expression shifted as she considered his words. It made sense in a twisted way, though she couldn't quite shake the unease she felt about staying in such an enormous, empty house.

Still, there was something about Simon's confidence that reassured her. He had a way of making even the most bizarre plans sound plausible.

"So, what's the plan if someone does come here?" she asked, crossing her arms, the cold edge of caution creeping back into her voice. "What do we do then?"

Simon smiled, the kind of smile that was both reassuring and unsettling at the same time. "We wait," he said simply. "We wait for them to make their move, and when they do, we'll be ready."

She wasn't sure what she'd expected, but that wasn't it. "Wait?" she echoed, her voice tinged with disbelief. "You want us to just wait? In this mansion?"

"Yep," Simon answered, turning and starting to walk again. "They're going to make the mistake of thinking they're in control. They won't be ready for us to turn the tables. But when they step through that door, they'll realize they're not the ones calling the shots anymore."

The woman felt a strange mix of unease and anticipation. There was something about Simon's words that made her believe in his plan, even if it felt like they were on the edge of a knife, teetering between survival and disaster.

It wasn't exactly a comforting thought, but it was the reality they had to deal with now.

"Alright," she said, her voice a little bit quieter now.
