Unwritten Desires

Chapter 24: Chapter 24

Eleanor

Weeks later and Liam still wouldn't leave my side. I tried to ignore it…I really did. But it was really sickening. He ate with me, went to the same classes with me, even watched me when I went to gym and swimming classes. Sometimes I even wondered if he wasn't worried about his own grades and attendance.

People were starting to suspect something was up and it was driving me nuts. I couldn't take it anymore, so I decided to confront him about it.

"What do you think you're doing?" I asked after pulling him into a supply closet when no one was watching.

"I should be asking you that." He arched a brow as he stared down at me, his eyes drifting to his wrist where I held him.

I immediately pulled away.

"No. I mean…" I shut my eyes with a small groan as I couldn't seem to find the right words. "I gave you my word did I not?" I glared at him but the half confused half bored look on his face didn't even waver.

"So why are you still following me around? Don't you know how annoying it is?"

"I don't know what you're talking about." He said and for a few seconds I forgot that we were supposed to be keeping it down and I let out a small scream to ease my frustration.

"Stop. Following. Me." I spoke through gritted teeth. "Go back to your normal life. Are you forgetting that you're supposed to be finding clues and plotting revenge?" I queried and a flicker of annoyance crossed his face.

Finally some emotion. "People are watching. Don't you want them to be less suspicious of you??"

"I do."

"Then stop following me around." I said matter-of-factly.

"No." He said in a blunt tone and I palmed my forehead, almost breaking my glasses.

Ugh. It had been months and I still hadn't got used to these things.

Most of the time I even forgot I was wearing them.

"I'm just going to believe that you're doing this on purpose to annoy me." I sighed as I slid my fingers under my glasses, gently massaging my nose bridge.

"I'm being cautious." He drawled with a slow blink.

I let out an exasperated laugh. "Cautious? Of what? I already told you, I'm not going to break our deal."

His eyes darkened slightly. "And I told you, I don't trust you."

I clenched my jaw, my fingers curling into fists. Of course. I should've known this wasn't about caution…it was about control. He wanted to keep me in check.

Too bad for him because I wasn't going to let him control me even in the slightest way.

Realizing that there was no use arguing, I exhaled sharply. "Fine. Whatever. But if you're going to keep lurking around me like a damn bodyguard, you better find a reasonable explanation for it."

He tilted his head slightly. "Why?"

"Because people are talking," I muttered, crossing my arms. "They're starting to think we're…together."

And that was the annoying part. Who would even think we could ever be together?

Even Sofia was thinking the same thing. As for Jake, I could tell he knew something was up but he didn't want to say anything about it.

After all, things haven't been normal between us since I broke up with him.

"Then that's what we'll tell them."

I blinked, realizing I wasn't paying attention to him. "…What?"

Liam's smirk was lazy, almost taunting. "If they want to believe we're together, let them."

"You cannot be serious right now."

"Do I look like someone who jokes around?" He said with an expressionless look.

I opened my mouth to argue, but the words never came. Instead, I just stared at him, confused. "Do you even know what you're saying?" I questioned with furrowed brows.

"Yes."

"The whole school is going to think I'm with you." I pointed at him, crinkling my nose in disgust. I was about to tell him how crazy it would be considering the fact that I just broke up with Jake but then I realized that the only people who knew about that were me and Jake. And Micheal…and probably him.

But he didn't say anything about Jake. So maybe he had forgotten.

"Yeah well, I'd rather deal with that nightmare than have them know the truth." He said, his gaze flickering to the door as if already calculating an escape in case this conversation dragged too long.

I felt one of my eyes twitch, but I chose not to say anything about his snarky retort. "Besides…aren't you the one who's always telling that friend of yours to give the people what they want?" He lifted a brow with a small smile and that was the last straw.

"Just because you get to be around me and Sofia doesn't mean you get to use my own words against me, Alex." I peered at him through my glasses as I crossed my arms over my chest.

"Watch your mouth, blondie." His low threatening tone sent chills up my spine. "You might not like what happens if I decided to shut it for you."

"Bold of you to assume I'd just let you." My voice sounded steady but I could feel my pulse hammering in my throat. I knew calling him by his real name would get on his nerves but I didn't know it'd make him this mad.

My thoughts came to an abrupt halt when he stepped closer, his eyes gleaming with danger. "Then I guess you should start being a little more careful, four eyes." His low voice was edged with warning.

"Because the more you push, the more I might just start pushing back."

My throat bobbed with a hard swallow but I didn't break eye contact. "Is that supposed to scare me?"

A smirk tugged at his lips. "No," he paused, reaching for my shoulders. "But it should."

He let his words settle before tilting his head slightly as his hands slid from my shoulders down to my upper arm. "You don't trust me, and I sure as hell don't trust you. But since we're stuck like this, we might as well make it believable."

His smirk widened as he leaned in just enough to make my breath hitch. "Cheers to our new relationship, sweetheart." His voice dripped with mockery as he dug his nails into my skin, the word "sweetheart" curling off his tongue like a twisted joke and it took everything in me to suppress my scream.

I may not have wanted to admit it, but I think I might have just signed my own death warrant.
