Unknown Frontier

Chapter 1: Another Universe

"So, I'm in a completely different reality."

Ian stared at the numbers scribbled on the paper in front of him. The values didn't add up—not in the way they should. He had been running these experiments for days now, searching for answers in this strange new world. Ian was a prodigy back on Earth, hailed for his groundbreaking research into theoretical physics and neuroscience. His last experiment had focused on understanding why apes evolved into humans—how their intelligence surpassed that of all other species. He had hypothesized that a specific anomaly in early hominid biology had catalyzed this leap, and he was determined to uncover it.

Then he found the artifact.

A peculiar, glowing blue object, something he had come to call Mindbloom, had appeared during one of his field experiments. It seemed otherworldly, almost alive, and Ian believed it held the key to understanding human evolution. But as he studied it further, something went wrong. A surge of energy engulfed him, and the next thing he knew, he was here, in a world that was both familiar and alien.

The Mindbloom had saved him, somehow. It had integrated itself into his body, reshaping and protecting him during the transition. He wasn't the same anymore—stronger, faster, sharper—but the full extent of its changes was still a mystery.

Knock, knock.

A soft rap at the door pulled Ian from his thoughts.

"Ian! Ian!"

The door creaked open, revealing a small boy no older than five. He had jet-black hair, purple eyes that shimmered like gemstones, and slightly pointed ears, a subtle but unmistakable sign that he wasn't human.

"Grandpa asked me to bring this to you," the boy said, holding up a small package.

"Thanks, Vulre," Ian replied, ruffling the boy's hair.

Vulre grinned and ran off, his tiny footsteps echoing through the hallway. Ian watched him go, a faint smile playing on his lips. Vulre was the first person he'd met when he arrived in this world. He had appeared, dazed and disoriented, in the backyard of Vulre's family home. The Eilrens, a kind and well-respected family, had taken him in without question.

Vulre's grandfather, Aeson, had been especially generous. Most people would have panicked at the sight of a stranger materializing out of thin air, but Aeson had simply helped Ian to his feet, taken him to a local hospital, and even arranged for him to have an identity in this world.

The package Vulre had delivered contained an ID card, a sleek device that functioned as both identification and communication tool, and a letter of introduction for the local adult academy. Aeson had suggested Ian attend to better understand the language and culture of this world.

Ian sighed and glanced at the small mirror hanging on the wall. His reflection stared back at him, a man in his early twenties, with sandy brown hair, pale skin, and faint traces of fatigue in his hazel eyes. He still looked human, save for the faint, glowing patterns etched into his eyes, a gift from the Mindbloom.

"This world..." Ian muttered, turning away. It resembled Earth in many ways, a blend of medieval architecture and advanced technology. But the laws of nature here were... different. Universal constants like the speed of light, Planck's constant, and gravitational force all varied slightly. It was as if the universe itself followed a different set of rules, even if they mirrored his own.

Later that day, Ian mounted a sleek e-bike, a relic of sorts that once belonged to Vulre's older sister, Axilya, and made his way to the academy.

From the outside, the academy was a marvel. Its towering structure combined dark stone with intricate metalwork, glowing runes etched into its beams. An automated quill floated near the entrance, scribbling messages onto a holographic scroll that welcomed newcomers in elegant script.

Inside, the halls buzzed with activity. Adults hurried between rooms, their faces a mix of excitement and determination. The walls were carved with ancient symbols that pulsed faintly with energy, illuminated by floating lanterns that cast a warm, golden light.

Ian made his way to the administration building, where a robotic receptionist processed his documents. "Your class begins in Wing C, Room 47," it said with a practiced smile. Ian thanked it, taking the strange, parchment-like paper it handed him.

The walk to his class was mesmerizing. He passed classrooms where instructors manipulated holographic projections, their hands weaving through light as they explained complex concepts. Students studied glowing texts, their faces illuminated by the faint blue light of their devices. The fusion of magic and technology was unlike anything Ian had ever seen. This was not the first time he had encountered it—this world was a blend of both. From what he understood, there were beings here who possessed extraordinary power, with Vulre's grandfather Aeson being one of them. Though Ian had never seen it firsthand, the description Vulre had given painted Aeson as a powerful man—someone who could break a mountain with a single strike, his strength said to be beyond comprehension. He was well-connected in the town, not just for his power, but for the respect he commanded. He passed by classrooms filled with students poring over texts projected onto glowing screens, instructors manipulating holograms for demonstrations, a constant reminder of how magic and technology intertwined in this world.

Finally, he reached Room 47. The door slid open with a quiet hiss, revealing a spacious classroom. Long wooden tables were fitted with arcane tools and technological interfaces. The students were a diverse mix—some weathered by age, their faces etched with years of experience, while others fidgeted nervously, clearly unused to the idea of school at their age.

Ian took a seat near the back, his eyes scanning the room. This was his first real step toward understanding this world—its people, its culture, its secrets. And perhaps, just perhaps, it would bring him one step closer to finding the ultimate truth.
