Chapter 3: Crazy old man, a stick, and an oracle
Luke concentrated his spirit and entered the system.
The screen appeared before his eyes and two new quests appeared on the list.
Quest 02 - Lunari Bloodline:
The Lunaris are a hybrid human species that possess certain differences in their racial traits. Find a female Lunari and produce offspring. The stronger the female's bloodline, the better the reward after completing the quest. (Xylara's Eye now possesses the ability to observe the purity of the Lunaris' bloodline.)
Reward: Increase in attributes, spiritual cultivation technique, panacea *1.
Reading the content of the quest, Luke fell into depression.
He didn't even have his immediate survival assured, but the damn system wanted him to go find a Lunari to have children.
As usual, he sighed.
"I can only forget about this quest for the moment."
Then he read the other quest that the system had issued.
Mission 3 - Divert a River:
The young Lunari will die in a week. Prevent his death.
Reward: ??
"..."
He sighed.
Well, the most important thing now was to find a way to escape his confinement. While he was behind the bars of the cell he couldn't do missions, or anything else. Besides, the old man he had as a companion made him nervous. A bad feeling, or a slight discomfort invaded him every time he even looked in his direction.
He approached the bars and looked at the dark hallway, there were no guards in sight. With his weak body, wanting to escape was simply suicide. He hesitated for a brief moment, and finally decided not to shout for the guards. At least right now, the old man was asleep, but if he started making noise he would surely wake up, and that could not end well at all.
He turned around to sit down and meditate, but when he did, he found that the old man, who had been snoring until a moment ago, was now standing next to his bed, watching him with a frown.
Luke felt a chill run through his body. And without thinking twice, he began to shout.
"Damn old man, I'm going to give you the beating of your life. Get ready because I'm going to beat you to death, you filthy old man!" And at the same time he began to hit the bars of the cell to make as much noise as possible.
The old man looked at him with some surprise, and held his chin in a thoughtful pose. Then, while Luke continued to make a fuss, he took a step and immediately appeared in front of him, crossing a few meters in an instant. Luke could not react in time, and could only watch as the old man's hand came closer, until it rested on his forehead. He lost the ability to resist, his entire body seemed to paralyze and a transparent window appeared floating in front of his eyes.
*Danger! Danger! A foreign force is trying to invade the host. Defense system activated*
*Defense failed*
*The system will freeze momentarily to protect itself*
Luke felt his body being invaded by a strange energy that he had never seen in any of his previous lives. Paralyzed, he watched the old man in front of him in terror.
"Very interesting, we will meet again, boy," said the old man smiling, and then disappeared without a trace.
Luke collapsed to the ground, covered in cold sweat. He had rarely suffered such a terrifying scene, and the last time he had been so vulnerable had been in his previous life, when he died at the hands of his mysterious enemy.
"This old man is definitely an anomaly. My luck doesn't seem to be improving, is it the curse of the system?"
He had noticed it throughout his reincarnations. Always, the universe seemed to be against him, throwing one disaster after another at him. Not eliminating him directly, but making each of his steps difficult.
The system was activated again and a window appeared in front of his eyes again.
*Analyzing the system… *
*No errors found, resuming full operation*
However, Luke saw that in his friends list, which should be empty since he hadn't even activated that functionality yet, a new contact was shining with the classic signage that the system used to show news. The contact's name was "PP".
He didn't try to test the system's communication function, and he didn't dare to even inspect the contact either. That old man was dangerous, and the less contact he had with him, the better.
"What's going on?!"
A group of Lunaris guards rushed in, a middle-aged woman of average appearance leading the way. She was the one questioning Luke.
"Why are you making such a fuss, kid? Do you want to end up in the pit?"
She clearly didn't have much patience to deal with him.
"Excuse me, miss, I just had a nightmare."
Luke lied without blinking. He didn't plan on mentioning the old man, he didn't want to even think about him.
"Hmph! The nightmare is yet to come!"
Luke didn't flinch, and the Lunari stopped paying attention to him and said to one of her group members, "Sira, inform Nyx that her prisoner has awakened."
The member nodded and ran off. The rest of the group also left with a weary gait, paying no more attention to Luke who was left alone in his cell.
Luke briefly observed the system for other irregularities, but everything seemed fine. Then he saw his pitiful attributes and felt bitter.
"It's time to train! At least I have to be able to ensure my survival! Every second counts."
He sat down on the ground and began to meditate.
In this world there are superpowers, besides magic that uses mana, and martial techniques that use the power of the body, there is the cultivation of the spirit, which is the most powerful of the three. By condensing the power of the essence of the universe, a person can obtain enormous powers, and if one cultivates their spirit to the extreme, they can theoretically ascend to the status of a god.
In his previous life, Luke cultivated to the fifth level, and although he was not one of the most powerful beings on the continent, it was enough to protect himself. Unless a catastrophe happened or he provoked one of the higher-level monsters, his safety was guaranteed. He eventually died at the hands of his mysterious enemy, after being poisoned and losing all of his spiritual cultivation.
After a few minutes, the system reacted again.
*Ding*
*The host has accumulated (1) spiritual energy and has successfully entered the ranks of superhumans*
*A reward has been distributed to celebrate this achievement*
Luke looked at his inventory and saw that a new item had appeared. It was a stick.
"The system's reward is… a stick?"
Luke looked at the description of the stick, trying to keep his hopes up.
*Stick: ??*
He was already used to the system's errant actions, and so his emotions did not fluctuate too much.
He took the stick out of his inventory and looked at it with Xylara's Eye.
*Mysterious Stick:
Quality: Sacred(Growing)
Sturdiness: Indestructible.
Skill:??
Description: A branch taken from a sacred tree, it was used by a god to walk through the mountains and a bit of the divine aura was impregnated in the wood*
Luke raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"While I don't know what functions this stick has, it's obviously a powerful item. I'll have to continue studying it in the future. Also, it seems that the system's level is currently very low, even Xylara's Eye at level 1 gave me more information than the system. I have to increase its level, but these quests I have don't help much."
"Mmm Syzy, can I generate a custom quest?"
*No, host. The current system level does not allow for the creation of custom missions*
He sighed, "It's a vicious cycle."
He closed his eyes again and continued to meditate. He had to increase his combat power!
Meanwhile, in a luxurious room covered in colorful flowers and fountains, a beautiful Lunari was meditating with her eyes closed, kneeling. Her imposing breasts threatened to overflow her dress with each breath.
Suddenly, she opened her eyes and a light flashed in the intense purple of her pupils. She slowly sat up, and looked towards the door of the room.
"Yfris, inform the queen that I have just received an oracle from the dragon goddess. I need to have an in-person audience with her."
A figure briefly appeared at the entrance of the room, and after answering affirmatively disappeared again as if it had never existed.
"It seems that a war is inevitable," she said in her melodious voice. Unfazed.
Then her breathing seemed to become labored and a blush spread across her cheeks.
"Marry a human? Is there really no other option?"
