The sound of clinking dishes and the scent of miso soup welcomed Mitsuha as she descended the stairs. Her younger sister, Yotsuha, was happily munching on breakfast while her grandmother, Hitoha, stirred a bowl of pickled vegetables.
"Morning!" Mitsuha greeted them groggily, rubbing her eyes.
"Morning," her grandmother replied with a calm smile.
"Lazy butt, you're so slow!" Yotsuha teased, pointing her chopsticks at her older sister.
"Sorry, sorry! I'll fix breakfast tomorrow, promise," Mitsuha replied, flashing an apologetic smile as she hurried to grab a bowl of rice.
"Humph, you better!" Yotsuha said, puffing her cheeks dramatically.
Mitsuha was about to sit down and eat when she noticed both Yotsuha and her grandmother staring at her. Feeling uncomfortable under their gaze, she hesitated.
"Uh... Is there something on my face?" Mitsuha asked, nervously patting her cheeks.
"No, it's just..." her grandmother trailed off, her wise eyes squinting slightly. "You seem... normal now."
"Yeah," Yotsuha added, her tone suddenly smug. "That ghost brother kept his promise."
Mitsuha blinked in confusion. "Ghost brother?"
"Don't tell me you forgot!" Yotsuha exclaimed, putting her chopsticks down dramatically. "You were acting so weird yesterday! Your body got possessed by a ghost or something. But don't worry! I purified you!"
"Possessed...?" Mitsuha stared at her sister, the absurdity of her words making her head spin. Before she could press further, a loud announcement broke through the morning air.
"Attention, citizens of Itomori. Good morning! This is an official announcement from the Itomori Town Hall regarding the upcoming mayoral election. The election will be held on the 23rd of next month. The election committee would like to remind—"
Hitoha turned off the radio with a shake of her head.
"Same old talk about elections. It's tiring," she muttered.
Yotsuha grabbed the remote and turned on the TV. A news report about a rare comet streaking across the sky appeared on the screen.
"Wow! That comet looks so cool!" Yotsuha said, her eyes sparkling as she watched the footage.
"Comet, elections... It's all the same," their grandmother mumbled again, shaking her head.
Mitsuha remained quiet, lost in thought. Even as Yotsuha chatted excitedly about the comet, Mitsuha couldn't shake the strange feeling settling in her chest.
After breakfast Mitsuha and Yotsuha were ready for school.
At school the rumors had been relentless all day. Mitsuha noticed the stares and hushed whispers as she walked through the school hallways.
"Hey, isn't that Mitsuha? The one who was acting all weird?"
"Yeah, they said she was totally out of it yesterday. Like a different person or something!"
Her friends, Sayaka and Tessie, approached her cautiously during lunch.
"Mitsuha, are you feeling okay?" Sayaka asked, her voice full of concern.
"Yeah, why?" Mitsuha replied, forcing a smile.
Tessie scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "It's just... yesterday, you were acting, uh... different."
Sayaka leaned closer. "You were so un-Mitsuha-like. It was kinda scary."
Mitsuha laughed nervously, waving her hands. "I-I think I was just tired. Probably studying too hard, you know?"
Her friends exchanged a look, clearly not convinced.
After school,Mitsuha Miyamizu leaned on her desk, the light of her small desk lamp pooling over the scattered notes and books in front of her. She sighed deeply, her pen idle in her hand. She couldn't focus—her thoughts were too tangled.
"That day..." she muttered to herself. "Could it really be true? Did I switch bodies with someone?"
She looked down at her open notebook. The messy, boyish handwriting stared back at her, the proof was there already .
Mitsuha sat on her bed, staring at her notebook again. The strange handwriting and random doodles made her heart race.
"This can't be a coincidence," she whispered. "It's real. I switched bodies with someone..."
She tried to recall every detail from that day—her disorientation, the unfamiliar surroundings.
"If it's true, then..." Mitsuha clenched her fists. "I need to know who they are. I need to understand what's happening!"
As Mitsuha prepared for bed, she felt a mix of excitement and fear bubbling inside her.
"Maybe it's better if it never happens again," she thought, staring up at the ceiling. "But... what if it does? What if I wake up tomorrow in a different life, a different body?" It been like this for days now, she been imagining non stop.
Her eyelids grew heavy as she lay in the dark, her mind racing with questions.
"If it happens again," she resolved, "I'll find out who you are. I'll get to the bottom of this. No matter what."
With that, Mitsuha drifted into an uneasy sleep.
The morning sun streamed into the room, rousing Aki, who found himself in an unfamiliar futon. Groggily sitting up, he rubbed his face. 'Something felt… off- but weirdly familiar'. He looked down.
"What the—?!" he gasped, staring at his chest. "Wait a minute…"
His hands froze mid-rub as realization dawned. He wasn't in his own body. He looked around the room, noting the floral-patterned curtains, a cluttered desk, and a mirror reflecting a young girl with messy hair—her hair.
"This is… the girl's body?!" Aki muttered, touching his face, before he could process the situation further, there was a sharp knock at the door.
"Onee-chan! How long are you going to stay in there?" came a voice. Without waiting for an answer, the door creaked open slightly. Yotsuha, Mitsuha's younger sister, peeked inside. Her eyes immediately narrowed.
"Ugh, gross! Why are you rubbing yourself?!" she shrieked before slamming the door shut. "Grandma! That ghost pervert is back!"
Aki froze, the words "ghost pervert" echoing in his mind. His face flushed in embarrassment. "What kind of reputation does this girl have?!" he muttered, slandering Mitsuha, Trying to hide his own deeds.
Shaking his head, he sighed. "It's been more than 3-4 days… Why now, when my exam is today? I hope she gets what I mean- by looking at the walls."
Waking up from the futon, Aki went to take a shower, after that he fumble his way into Mitsuha's school uniform—to find the male uniform he buyed from Mitsuha male friend.
Aki descended the stairs to find Mitsuha's grandmother and sister seated at the breakfast table.
"Morning," Aki said, his voice soft and unfamiliar to his own ears.
"Morning, Mitsuha," the grandmother replied, her sharp eyes lingering on him for a moment before continuing to eat.
After the awkward JJbreakfast, Alongside Yotsuha, Aki—now in Mitsuha's body—walked to school together.
"Why are you acting so afraid after seeing me this morning?" Aki asked, ruffling Yotsuha's hair.
"Of course, I was afraid! You were acting like a pervert..." Yotsuha retorted, crossing her arms. "So, when will you leave my sister's body?" she asked.
"Humm, maybe tomorrow morning it will be normal again," Aki replied nonchalantly.
Leaving the pouting kid behind, Aki-now in Mitsuha's body dresses in male uniform—was already attracting attention from others.
"Class, close your books. I will now distribute your exam papers," the teacher announced.
Aki continued taking the exam as Mitsuha, fully aware that he was still possessing her body.
"Should I aim for full marks or just tank this to zero?" he wondered. "Well, I should at least give her a fair chance," he decided.
With that thought, Aki focused on the exams, giving it his all for the three subjects scheduled for today.
"Tomorrow? It's her problem not mine."
