Chapter 40: An Ambush
"Thank you, Lily. For staying by my side until now."
Lily stared at the vast farm in front of her as her mind replayed Enzo's words. Her hands clenched as she remembered her purpose for being in the main house.
She didn't want to do it. She truly loved Enzo. Her heart had been tied to that handsome man even when Enzo didn't love her.
Lily was even willing to do anything to make Enzo happy. She devoted her entire life to helping that man. But if Lily had to choose between her older sister or Enzo, she would still go to her sister, who had sacrificed everything for their lives.
Unlike Lily, who preferred to move on with her life and forget their past as her mother wanted, her sister Rose was still bound by their father's orders and refused to forget them no matter how hard Lily tried to persuade Rose. Rose always reminded her that they had to repay their father. His orders had to be carried out, even if it meant she had to sacrifice the feelings she had developed for Enzo.
Lily could already guess what would happen if she carried out her sister's order. She might hurt many people, but Lily also couldn't ignore the request of her only brother just because of her love for Enzo.
Lily now considered herself a very hypocritical woman. Her heart always said that she would do anything to please Enzo. But her mind preferred to betray him for her sister's happiness.
Lily knew she would not have the chance to talk to Enzo again. Lily had decided to bury her love with her life if she had to betray Enzo.
Her heart felt as if it was being squeezed when her cell phone suddenly vibrated because of an incoming call. Lily didn't want to pick it up. But Lily knew she had no choice when she saw the caller's name.
"Hello?"
[Our plan will start at 10 pm, Lily. One hour before this plan starts, I want you to send the CCTV footage of the house live so that we can more easily get rid of the guards surrounding the house.]
Lily bit her lip until it bled as she tried to hold back her frustration. Her clenched fists trembled even more as Lily tried to make her voice sound confident.
"I understand," she said briefly before moving her cell phone away from her mouth. As she tried to catch her breath, her head lifted to look at the bright sky decorated by the full moon. Lily's lips showed a sad smile as she remembered that beautiful sight might be the last sight she would see.
[Lily...]
Rose paused before continuing her words with a full warning when she knew Lily could still hear her voice.
[Don't involve any feelings in carrying out this task. Master has been waiting for this event to happen. Now is our only chance to prove that we are still useful to him. We will not be able to pay a fair price if we fail, Lily.]
Lily took a deep breath before smiling, even though Lily knew Rose would not be able to see her smile.
"I know. Master's orders are more important than anything else," Lily said calmly. She didn't wait for Rose to reply to her words again when Lily ended their call. Lily enjoyed the blowing wind for a moment while closing her eyes. A small smile was still on her lips when her reddened eyes slowly opened again.
"I know exactly what I have to do today," Lily whispered hoarsely.
***
In the quiet night, Lily changed the clothes she had prepared with quick movements. Her blouse and trousers were immediately replaced with a short shirt and loose pants that she had kept in her closet. Lily took a deep breath once again when she managed to connect the CCTV camera in Enzo's house to her sister's group.
Her dull gaze stopped at the pile of files containing a list of Mia's contracts with several companies. Among the piles, there was also Enzo's work that was handed over to her for safekeeping. Lily rubbed the files slowly before dropping his hand with a gloomy face.
Heat seemed to sting his eyes when Lily left the files to take out a gun from her hidden bag.
Relying on her memory of the house guard patrol schedule, along with evidence that everyone had rested in their respective rooms, Lily easily got out of her room. Her body was momentarily frozen in front of Mia and Victor's room door before she made up her mind to complete the task that had been on her shoulders.
CLACK!
With slow and careful steps, Lily finally arrived next to Victor, who was sleeping while hugging Mia, who was also fast asleep in Victor's warm embrace. Lily bit her lip hard before uttering short words in a trembling voice.
"I'm sorry."
BANG!
Lily didn't know that since she opened the door, Victor had woken up from his sleep. The man continued to act because he didn't want to harbor suspicions about the person who had been close to Mia and Enzo. However, when Victor heard the clicking sound of releasing the gun safety, the man reflexively rolled over to avoid it while carrying Mia, who was still sleeping in his arms.
But no matter how fast his survival reflexes acted, Victor still suffered a gunshot wound that grazed his right shoulder. His firm eyebrows furrowed in alertness as he used his body to protect Mia, who had finally woken up from her sleep.
"Victor, what are-"
Mia couldn't finish her sentence when her newly opened eyes saw a thick red puddle under her feet. Her drowsiness immediately disappeared. Her body shook when she realized that the blood was from Victor.
BANG!
BANG!
Mia hadn't had time to say anything when her body rolled again several times. Her head was dizzy from being forced to follow many movements in a short time. In her chaotic thoughts, Mia could finally see Lily's cold face, who was raising her gun to shoot them several times.
"Lily! Why did you do this?!"
Mia's face was pale from the sudden shock that hit her. Her body trembled as she tried to protect Victor, who took some bullet to protect Mia. Tears slowly dripped from Mia's round eyes as she stared in disbelief at Lily, who stubbornly still pointed her gun at Victor.
"He must die to trigger a war between organizations that can keep Enzo busy for a while, Mia. I was ordered to take you back home. Your real home with your biological father."
Mia forgot to breathe when the girl heard a cruel confession from the mouth of the person she trusted so much. Her gaze was unfocused as her body suddenly shook even more because of the fear that took over every cell in Mia's body.
"She's... not going anywhere," Victor said with difficulty. Victor gave Mia a sign to immediately run towards the door when the timing had come. Victor was just about to do something when Lily shot him again without hesitation.
"Victor!"
BANG!
