Chapter 400: The Seat of Seven
'Free?' Zaroth's mind began to wander. Vera had been asked to kill something in the Elven continents by Sira and Night—to repay them for saving his life and sealing the curse.
And now, the Inner Circle wanted him to free something? Not kill it?
The chance that these elven factions were talking about different things was there... but luck had never been on his side, and it felt like that was exactly the case.
'So political differences?' he would have laughed if he wasn't hidden in Vera's shadow.
It seemed that the elves and humans were not that far from one another.
'The difference could be explained in the continents.' The beast master thought, there were two elven continents. Maybe all this time they were in the wrong one? But neither Sira nor Night had told them anything about such matters.
'So they must think it's not necessary.'
There was no point in guessing. He was long accustomed to going along with the flow—it was something he had been doing for most of his life anyway… The only difference now was that he had the power to flip the playboard should he wish to.
The elves were powerful, no doubt. But if it came to it, if things went south, he could hurt them. Maybe even kill them.
Following the two elves, Vera and Ari found themselves before a giant white door, guarded by dozens of guards wearing mighty elven armor with countless runes atop them.
Just a look was all these guards bothered to pay their group. The moment they saw the two elves that were walking confidently, they didn't dare get in their way.
The male and the female elves opened the doors with no hesitation, as if they owned the place.
'These ones are powerful,' Luna warned. She didn't usually bother anymore. Zaroth had grown strong—strong enough that she rarely felt the need to warn him. But these beings beyond the door… they were different.
'I know,' he replied, still in his shadow form. For a fraction of a second he wondered if his hidden spot would be revealed. But it was too late to change it should that happen.
As they entered the room, a voice greeted them.
"Ah, Adam and Eve! It hasn't been that long since your venture into the Wasteland. What brings you back?"
'So these are their names,' Zaroth noted the way their guides were named. His attention didn't stay on them however, since he was in his shadow form his senses were able to pick up seven figures seated calmly in their chairs.
Each one exuded power beyond mortal comprehension.
The first had his chest puffed up, watching Vera with a mix of superiority and amusement.
The second was flipping a golden coin between his fingers, eyes locked not on the Oracle's body, but on her mask.
The third one… went against everything Zaroth knew about the elves. A stunning figure with a simple robe around her breathtaking body… not that the cloth did any work, as all her private features were in full display. There were literally hearts in her pupils as she eyed Adam like a predator.
The fourth one had his sight move from the naked elf to Adam; his envy couldn't be made any clearer.
The fifth one had his cheeks bloated. Rather than a beautiful elf, he resembled a rich aristocrat that couldn't keep his hunger in check, even now he had a chicken wing in one hand.
The sixth one was tapping her left foot rapidly in hurried motions. The right armrest on her chair had cracked, probably from a recent outburst.
And the seventh had her head resting on the chair, staring at the ceiling.
'Wait, is she sleeping?' the beast master realized, sensing the small amount of saliva falling off the corner of her mouth.
"We found Fragment Barrier," Eve explained calmly, pointing to Vera.
"Then why is this one here?" the one seated with authority asked about Ari.
"According to them, the two were traveling together," Adam spoke.
"Just the two?" one of the seven asked, amusement showing on his face.
"Yes," Adam nodded.
With a sigh, the prideful one was about to speak, but the one that had been tapping her foot nervously all this time interjected.
"Good, now leave. We have to speak in private."
Adam and Eve bowed and left the room just as quickly as they entered.
Deadly silence fell in the room.
Ari, the poor village girl, was visibly having a panic attack. She didn't know history well, but in this case there was no need to, just being near these elves, she felt it.
Absolute authority.
If they simply wished, they could erase her from existence.
And the Oracle was a stern contrast to her; her body wasn't shaking like the brown elf's, and her mask made it impossible to see how she felt.
"It's an honor to meet you. Even from here I can sense your powers," the naked elf spoke, eyeing the petite girl's feet. A shiver went down her spine seeing a member of another race.
"But then again, it's a bit rude to hide from us, you know? It's not like we mean harm."
'Fuck,' Zaroth cursed. It was obvious that they had sensed him. The question was if he were to show himself, would they attack him? Maybe they were able to sense him, but not that he was a part demon.
'Worst case scenario I will have to fight the seven of them while keeping Vera safe,' he thought.
'Still, Vera doesn't seem worried… so this must mean we are on the right track.'
'No turning back now. All I can do is bullshit my way out of this.'
With his mind made, he exited the Oracle's shadow.
The instant he did, the room became colder.
A flicker of unease crossed the prideful elf's face.
The golden coin snapped in half.
The naked elf smiled—widely.
The angry one turned to him, as did the envious one.
The glutton stopped eating.
The sleeper opened her eyes.
"Well, I didn't expect to meet the ruler of the Inner Circle like this," Zaroth scoffed, making no attempt to hide his sinister aura.
"Still, I hope you're not foolish enough to attack me. That would be... a very stupid thing to do.
For you."
