Chapter 378: Beneath the Blinding Light
Zaroth was forced to shield his eyes from the blinding light that came from beneath his feet.
It was obvious that it was caused by an enemy, leading him to order the serpent to move ahead at full speed.
He knew that when one found themselves in deep waters, they had to move calmly to avoid attracting the attention of any potential foes. However, considering that giant monster approached them first, it was pretty clear they had already been spotted.
ROOOAAAAAARRR
Letting out a mighty roar that seemed to split the waves coming towards them, the serpent shot forward, its speed increasing many times over.
Naturally, due to the increase in its movements, the mana the serpent was using increased as well.
Still, Zaroth couldn't afford to play it safe. Conserving too much mana now might weaken the power needed to face the looming threat—and the consequences would be dire.
"So, I have to use just enough mana to kill the enemy while making sure I have enough to not find myself stranded in the middle of the ocean? Easy enough," he chuckled, throwing a glance at Luna.
She nodded in response, her body shifting to her dragon form. She became too big to stand on the shrinking version of the serpent, causing her to rise into the sky.
He trusted that Luna was going to be enough to get rid of whatever was coming their way. As such, he made Eldros enter back into his shadow. It wasn't that he didn't trust his friend—it was just that he was primarily a melee fighter who used the ground to fight. It would be stupid to make him dive underwater. Not to mention that he was no beast, meaning if Eldros found himself stuck, Zaroth couldn't just dissolve him back into his core and would be forced to go and retrieve him.
ROOOAAAAAARRR
Luna, being a beast and all, didn't have such problems. Letting out a thunderous roar, she dove headfirst into the deep water, eyes focused on the light that had appeared below them.
Her mission wasn't really to kill the being but to slow it down while the serpent was going to take her master away to a safe distance.
Once her bony body found itself in the water, she managed to get a better view of the being that had been brave enough to attack them.
It was wide—so wide, in fact, that on its surface there could be a city. Its size was at least a hundred meters in every direction.
Unlike so many beasts they had faced until now, however, the surface of its skin—if one could call it that—was smooth and squishy.
This was a colossal jellyfish that gave off a strange purple glow.
'Did we overreact?' Luna thought for a second. Even if it was a colossal being, it was still just a jellyfish—how dangerous could it be?
However, she wasn't one to underestimate her enemies. No matter how it looked, she was going to treat every fight like it was a battle to the death… not that she was really alive in the first place.
Opening her jaws wide, the back of her throat began to give off a green glow, about to unleash a devastating inferno.
Using fire breath underwater? If one was looking from the side, they would have thought that her master's insanity had rubbed off on her as well. Using fire underwater was pointless after all.
But she was no mere beast; she was of the Mythical tier, and she had the skill of fire control in her arsenal.
And this skill wasn't like Zaroth's, which he had just recently learned. No, hers was more powerful with a greater effect, reach, and might.
The moment the devastating inferno left her mouth, the fire shot toward the surface of the jellyfish, aiming to burn it to a crisp.
The inferno passed through the water like it was passing through air—no part of its temperature or volume was lost along the way. It was the opposite. Thanks to the compressive nature of the water and her skill, the fire quickly increased its temperature even more, causing the water next to it to start sizzling due to the boiling temperatures.
Silence—this was still deep underwater, so any sound produced didn't travel very far, causing the eerie silent nature of the ocean.
Back on the surface, Zaroth wasn't able to hear any sounds of fighting, but what he saw made up for that.
The purple light that the jellyfish gave off dispersed in a heartbeat; it was engulfed by Luna's flames, painting it in a green menacing color just like his eyes.
"She really is amazing," he admitted, eyes still wide in awe.
Of course, their enemy wasn't going to stand in one place after just being hit by a fire attack.
It thrashed its tentacles with lightning speed, aiming to trap Luna and drain the vitality from her body.
But in a flash, the dragon disappeared from view, Zaroth having summoned her next to him.
The jellyfish stayed stunned for several seconds, making sure that the dragon was really gone and it wasn't some kind of illusion trick. Then it fixed its gaze on the serpent that had managed to get away.
It could try to go after it… but it had been hurt by the fight with the dragon and was in no position to fight at the moment. Going against the serpent now was akin to committing suicide.
Even if it had lower intelligence than a human, it was still able to see that the food it would get wouldn't be worth it, leading it to leave the serpent alone.
"Well done!" Zaroth praised his summon the moment she appeared next to him.
"Few can stand against me!" she puffed her chest in pride, smiling at her master's words.
With the threat now gone, Zaroth turned to Vera, who had been sitting at the far end of the serpent all this time.
"So you knew that we were going to be attacked?"
She simply nodded, giving him the satisfaction of confirming it.
"How many more will we face, and how strong are they?"
She had come with him under the pretext that she could help, so he didn't feel bad about using her ability to glimpse parts of the future.
"Many more will come, and this one was too weak to be a real threat compared to them," she answered.
Seeing the frown that was starting to form on his face, she quickly added,
"But the next fight isn't tonight. So enjoy your night in peace… just don't be too loud—I have trouble falling asleep," she said calmly, settling on the rough back of the serpent.
Zaroth would have asked why she was going to sleep so early and so far from the center of the serpent where he had put his bed—until his gaze drifted upward to the stars twinkling faintly in the night sky.
"Wow," he whispered in awe. This was a sight that was simply breathtaking. Not wanting to miss it, he lay upon his bed, his mind starting to wander in the beauty of space.
After a while, the surroundings grew dimmer as the night fully settled in.
Suddenly, Zaroth felt the bed shift slightly as someone climbed in beside him.
There was no need to look; he already knew who it was—Luna.
"Isn't this the perfect time and place?" she mused, placing a hand over her attire as she slowly began to undress.
Zaroth mirrored her actions. The moment he had long awaited had finally come. He was going to spend the night with Luna.
