Chapter 9: ch 7 : crash and burn
Owwwww man... what time is it?
I feel like I've been hit by ten trucks at once. That metallic bird bastard really didn't hold back his punches.
I reach into my pocket, groaning, and check my phone.
WHAAAAAT?! I'VE BEEN UNCONSCIOUS FOR 6 HOURS?! IT'S NEARLY 3 A.M.!
Oh man. Oh man. May is gonna kill me for how late I am!
Okay, okay...
Goddammit! I can't swing back—my webshooter's busted!
Guess I'll have to go back the old-fashioned way.
At the very least, I've got to call May so she's not worried sick.
I open my phone and tap on Aunt May's number. It starts ringing—only for her to pick up immediately.
May: "Hello? Kai? Are you there?"
Kai: "Yes, Aunt May..."
May: "YOU ARE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE, YOUNG MAN!!"
Kai: "Listen, Aunt May, I have a really good reason—"
May: "Oh? Then what is it?!"
Shit shit—I didn't think of an excuse! What do I say? What do I say...? Got it!
Kai: "Well... there was this school project we had today, and I had to go to my partner's house so we could work on it."
May: "You had to work on a project until 3 A.M.? Kai Benjamin Parker, do you honestly believe I'm going to fall for that?"
Man, oh man. When she says my full name... now you know she's really pissed.
Kai: "No, no, May, I'm being honest here! We were working on the project and time just flew by. I didn't realize how late it got. I'm really sorry, Aunt May. I won't do it again."
May: "Okay, I'll believe you this one time. But you have to promise me you'll never do this again! You know I worry about you, Kai. And since your uncle... I just... I just couldn't take it if something happened to you too."
Kai: "I'm sorry, Aunt May. I really am. And I promise—I won't ever do this again."
May: "Good. Now come home. I'm going to reheat your dinner."
Kai: "Okay... thanks, Aunt May. I'll see you at home."
May: "Bye, honey."
Phew.
Maaaaaan, that was so stressful. And I'm pretty sure I'm still gonna get an earful when I walk through that door.
This sucks. First the stuff that happened at school, then the metallic bird bastard, now an angry May! I just had to jinx myself, didn't I? What did I expect to happen with my Parker luck?
Sigh... No use crying over spilled milk. Let's just head home, eat whatever's left of dinner, get some sleep, and deal with whatever chaos tomorrow throws at me.
---
I made it back, got my expected scolding from May, patched myself up in my room, and collapsed into bed, barely conscious before I drifted off into sleep.
---
The Next Morning
As usual, I did my morning patrol—eyes sharp, especially on the lookout for that bird bastard. Unfortunately, there was no sign of him.
I showed up late to school. Again.
The school day was pretty uneventful. Jeffrey didn't show up either, and as usual, Nicole and Jecka were sitting together skipping class. I couldn't really talk to them—things have been weird since our fight.
Now that I think about it... the way I told them I'd be there for them when they needed help... ugh, so awkward and cringy. I really wish I'd said it differently.
Still, I stand by it. If they ever need me, I'll help—no matter our differences.
---
The school day passed by like a blur. Afterward, I threw the suit back on and headed out for another patrol.
And near the end of it—
There he was.
The bird bastard.
What is he doing now...?
Wait...
Is that what I think it is?
Stark Industries moving trucks. Those things carry tons of expensive tech.
Oh no.
Is he trying to steal it?!
Oh crap—he just landed on one of them! I've gotta stop him before he grabs something dangerous!
---
The night was thick with tension as the convoy of armored trucks rolled along the dimly lit highway. Engines purred quietly beneath reinforced steel, each vehicle packed with high-level tech meant to disappear without a trace.
But not tonight.
A shadow swooped in overhead—Vulture, wings spread wide, talons gleaming under the moonlight. He dropped low, grabbing onto the rear of the lead truck, ready to tear through the roof.
THWIP!
A web latched onto his wingpack.
"What the—?"
Vulture yanked back, but it was too late—he was pulled off the truck and slammed into the side, metal denting under his weight.
Kai landed on the roof with a solid thud. "Hey, birdbrain! Need help breaking in, or were you gonna knock politely?"
Toomes snarled, wings flaring to stabilize himself mid-air. "You again?"
"You sound surprised. Like you weren't robbing a government convoy again."
"You should've stayed out of this."
"Yeah, I get that a lot," Kai quipped, already launching another web. "Spoiler: I never do."
The Vulture boosted forward, wings slicing the air. Kai dove and rolled as the wing clipped the top of the truck, shearing through metal like cardboard.
Toomes soared upward, then dove again—this time crashing through the torn roof.
Kai followed, flipping through the gap and landing inside the moving vehicle. Crates rattled and buzzed around him—alien power sources glowing faint purple and green.
"Seriously," Kai muttered, "this stuff practically screams 'do not shake.' And here you are, throwing it around like a toddler at a LEGO store."
The Vulture dropped into the cargo bay, claws dragging sparks across the floor. "You don't know when to quit."
"Do you rehearse these lines, or do they just come naturally?"
With a roar, Toomes lunged.
Kai leapt over a crate and webbed the ceiling, swinging into a powerful kick that caught Toomes in the chest. He staggered but countered with a slash from his talon. Kai ducked, flipping backward off a crate.
Energy crackled from a crate behind them.
"Careful!" Kai yelled. "You break it, you buy it! And I really don't think your black-market buddies do refunds."
Toomes fired a pulse blast from a stolen weapon. Kai dove left—barely avoiding the beam as it scorched a crater in the truck wall.
The vehicle rocked violently. They were turning.
Kai fired a web at the wingpack and yanked, throwing off Vulture's flight path. He stumbled into a stack of crates that nearly toppled over.
"You're wasting your time," Toomes growled. "This isn't your fight."
"I'm literally the one you keep trying to vaporize," Kai shot back, dodging another burst of plasma. "Feels kinda personal, y'know?"
Toomes surged forward and slammed Kai against the wall. Metal groaned under the pressure.
"I'm doing what I have to," he said.
Kai squirmed in his grip, boots scraping the floor. "Yeah? Funny how what you have to do always involves stealing superweapons and endangering civilians."
Vulture didn't answer. He fired his boosters, crashing through the truck ceiling with Kai still in his grip.
They shot into the sky.
The wind howled in Kai's ears as they rose higher and higher over the dark lake below.
"Okay—this is starting to feel a little excessive!" Kai shouted. "You ever heard of just... ghosting someone?"
Toomes held him out at arm's length, eyes locked through the green lenses.
"You should've walked away."
"And you should've taken up skydiving instead of crime!"
Vulture let go.
Kai plummeted.
"No-no-no-no—!"
The wind tore at his limbs. He twisted, spun, fired a web—
Nothing to stick to.
He shot another—still nothing.
The black surface of the lake rushed up fast. His heart pounded like a drum in his ears.
CRASH!
The impact was brutal.
Water slammed into him like a wall of bricks, knocking the air from his lungs. The shock of the cold wrapped around him instantly, dragging him down.
His limbs felt heavy. His suit soaked, vision blurred, he kicked hard—up, up—
His fingers broke the surface.
He gasped, coughing and choking as he fought to keep his head above water.
Alone.
No rescue.
No one coming.
He forced himself toward the muddy edge, every stroke a battle. Finally, his hand scraped against the shoreline, and he pulled himself onto the wet earth.
Kai lay there, soaking, wheezing.
"...Okay," he rasped under his breath, "definitely not how I pictured that going."
The lake was silent behind him. The trucks were gone.
And the Vulture?
Gone too.

(A/N):
Hey there, everybody! It's been a while since I dropped a chapter—sorry about that! As you know, I had exams and had to focus on them. I also said I'd post this chapter on the 11th but couldn't follow through.
But hey—it's here now! Yaaay me!
Better late than never, right?
I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter. I worked hard on the fight scene—man, I really struggle with those—but I hope it turned out okay in the end.
With all that said, I hope you're all having a great day.
—Sol, peace out 😎
