Narrator POV
After Canada's Hunters had been so easily dispatched by a single one of Sung Jin-Woo's shadows, every other skeptic quickly accepted the truth; No Hunter was capable of making any valuable contribution in the upcoming invasion.
As for Sung Jin-Woo himself, he had decided to go to China to see if Antares would begin his invasion from there, while Dante had gone to India, and Shiraori had gone over to Russia. Of course, the white-haired pair knew exactly where Antares would come from, but decided to put on an act just because.
As Dante had said before, he sent several of his Deathborns to all the places with Colossal Gates, giving the people a sense of safety and order as they evacuated from the cities that had the Gates in their skies.
As they waited, the familiar cracking sounds that indicated the beginning of a Dungeon Break rang out from all the Gates simultaneously, then a burst of mana followed immediately after. The Gates had all broken, but unlike what was expected, no monsters came out of any of the Gates at all.
"Hey, Jin-Woo. Got a signal from Canada. It's Antares." Dante telepathically informed Sung Jin-Woo. "Don't worry about Kamish, I've got him within Andern's barrier, as well as the entirety of the Eastern half of Canada." Sung Jin-Woo sighed in relief, then teleported to the city where Canada's Colossal Gate had opened.
…
Sung Jin-Woo POV
The air was scorching and charged with mana. It seems that after he arrived, Antares summoned his dragons and the other Monarchs' armies here. It's only been a minute at most, but they're already laying waste to the area around them.
"Well, I'd better get started taking them out, since they aren't going to kill themselves." I say, then hold out one of my daggers, wrapping it with darkness and the power of Ruler's Authority, then slash forward tearing through a dozen of them in a single blow.
After taking them the closest monsters out, the rest of them turn to look at me. Dragons, golems, giants, centipedes and more focus on me with extremely hostile intent, but even then, they don't feel threatening at all.
Activating Mercurial Boost, I dash forward, cutting down scores of monsters in the blink of an eye, slowly but surely, pulling the others closer. As I continue to kill the monsters, I look in the distance and see Antares, his hands behind his back, watching impassively as I tear through the monsters.
He lifts his hand, then points in my direction. And as if that was a signal, all the dragons began attacking with great fervency. Flaming breath attacks rained down from the sky with high frequency, but they were too slow to hit me.
The cycle of dodging their attacks and killing the ones I catch off guard continued, until eventually, I had cleared enough of an area for me to land without being hounded by the monsters. "Arise." I say, raising every monster I had killed, which also happened to include giants, which attacked any dragons that flew low enough.
But as they were attacking the weaker dragons, breaths impacted on them, the most notable one coming from a large dark grey dragon with a particularly large spike at its neck. "How dare these puppets made of mana try to stop the Dragon Monarch. This servant of the Dragon Monarch will get rid of you." It shouted with a booming voice.
Slipping into Stealth, I quickly dash upward, using the buildings and monsters in my way as footholds, until I got right above the head of that particular dragon. "You talk too much." I say and behead it before it can react. Using its slowly falling corpse as a foothold, I move to attack the other dragons in the air, cutting a path to Antares.
…
Dante POV
Keeping the armies of the other Monarchs at bay has been pretty easy. By the way, we're in Thompson, on the west side of Richmond. We've restricted them to Richmond, so that there's enough space for them to occupy.
Right now, we aren't doing much else except spectating Jin-Woo's battle against Antares and the other Monarchs' armies. But seeing as we both know that he's going to win, as in he's actually going to defeat Antares rather than stall him long enough for the Rulers to come by and jump him, we're just waiting to implement a plan that has been in development for the past few days.
"Thinking about it now, I kinda feel sorry for Anty over there." Shiro says as she takes a long slurp from the milkshake in her hand. "I mean, he's grown familiar with Ashborne's capabilities, so he's got stuff he expects to see from Jin-Woo. But with what we've done, he'll see stuff that he would think came out of left field, while we will see it as normal." She said, explaining the main reason that Antares will lose this battle.
Even in the original timeline, when Jin-Woo used Dragon Fear, he was caught off guard because he had never seen Ashborne use it. So our Jin-Woo who's got Baran's lightning, Dragon Fear, way better combat abilities, and over ten times the number of soldiers when compared to the total number of monsters in the Monarchs' armies, would give him a heart attack, if he could have one.
Just as that thought passes through my mind, I feel the mana in the air vibrate vigorously, a sign that Jin-Woo has activated Dragon Fear. Three seconds later, Jin-Woo and Antares have their mana signatures vanish from the city, then reappear on an uninhabited island off the coast of Japan.
But just before he left, Jin-Woo summoned out a fifth of his army here, and they quickly got to work tearing every single living monster apart. While that's going on, I snap my fingers, creating large holograms over every single place in the world where humans are present, basically broadcasting the battle between Jin-Woo and Antares, just so humanity on this Earth doesn't ever forget who fought for their survival.
…
Narrator POV
Antares was smirking at Jin-Woo, entirely unaware that his troops were being decimated in Canada. "I see. You brought me here so that you could reduce the load on your magic power from regenerating your soldiers after their destruction. An amazing strategy, but it will only hold true for so long." He said, his voice smooth, yet having an edge to it.
"Don't bother yourself about the future, Antares. You won't be around for much longer." Sung Jin-Woo said as he brandished his daggers. "Really? Then, why don't you back up your words?" Antares replied as he transformed into his dragon form. As he transformed, Sung Jin-Woo summoned the remaining 80% of his army out, causing Antares' eyes to widen in shock.
He saw monsters he had never encountered anywhere else, not even in the other Monarchs' armies. But the unfamiliarity of the monsters wasn't what gave him pause, but their level of strength. He felt many of them that had similar levels of strength to the other Monarchs, with a few even surpassing the Monarchs' power.
The notable few that had achieved such strength were Igris, Baruka, Beru, Bellion, Tusk, and Merlin. Antares looked at them with surprise, then smiled, which in his gigantic dragon form, looked terrifying.
"It's best that you focus." Antares suddenly heard Sung Jin-Woo's voice right at the left side of his head. And before he could even turn his eyes to look at Sung Jin-Woo, he was hit with a powerful blow that caused his head to move so quickly in the opposite direction that anyone would think he would get whiplash.
"Or don't. I'm trying to kill you, after all." Sung Jin-Woo said, then dashed towards Antares' head and released another punch. But right as his fist was about to make contact, Antares turned his head, revealing a breath that was charging up. Bellion came in from the side and swung the large great sword he was holding, and it lengthened into segments that were connected in such a way that the sword acted like a whip, which then wrapped around Antares' maw, clamping it shut and forcefully holding the breath attack back.
Bellion then pulled downward as hard as he could, and five Shadow Giants ran up to Antares and held his neck down. Choosing to add onto the downforce on Antares, Tusk cast gravity magic that pressed down on Antares without mercy.
Igris, Beru and Greed – the shadow that Sung Jin-Woo made from Hwang Dong-Su, jumped into the battle, with Beru and Greed clawing and punching at Antares' head, while Igris slashed at Antares with his enhanced Demon King's Longsword, which released rampaging lightning strikes that would have killed a National Rank Hunter with ease.
But Antares was far stronger than a mere National Rank Hunter, and it showed vividly as he smiled, looking amused as his head was on the ground. "I enjoy battles where I overwhelm the enemy with a significant difference in numbers, but I do find the opposite situation is somewhat amusing." Antares said as he raised his head, seemingly ignoring the shadows that were trying to keep his head on the ground.
"Allow me to show you the real thing." Antares said, then let out a roar that caused the mana in the environment to vibrate. He had released his own Dragon Fear, which was more powerful than Sung Jin-Woo's version. It was so effective that some shadows were destroyed by the shockwave, and the mana in the air made sounds reminiscent of ripping.
Sung Jin-Woo, who was in the air riding Kaisel, understood that he couldn't use his soldiers to battle while the effect of Dragon Fear and cancelled the summon of all the shadows present on the island. Antares saw this and wasted no time in mounting a counterattack, letting out a breath of flames that was backed by the power of destruction that he wielded.
Using Shundō, Sung Jin-Woo rocketed away from Antares' line of attack, remaining unscathed. The flames flew past him, then concentrated before erupting in an explosion that destroyed the mountain that was on the island. The ground had been scorched so badly that the rocks were now red hot, with most of them even becoming molten.
"This is the real thing. The avatar of destruction, who doesn't hesitate to sacrifice oneself for the sake of a raging war. The amalgam of screams, blood, madness and destruction. A being created solely for war. That is me, Antares, the King of Dragons and Monarch of Destruction." Antares said as his voice boomed across the island.
"You really love to hear yourself talk, don't you?" Sung Jin-Woo said as he dashed forward at Antares, his intent to kill burning fervently. "You do not know your place." Antares said, slashing a massive arm at Sung Jin-Woo, which was avoided with blinding speed. "Rudra, fire now!" Sung Jin-Woo shouted out, following which, a massive Shadow Leviathan along with a dozen Sea Serpents erupted from the ocean around the island, then began bombarding Antares with ice breaths and massive, extremely pressurized jets of water.
Antares roared out in annoyance as he prepared to fire a breath that would extinguish the shadows if it hit, but he was interrupted by the sound of lightning charging. He looked up and saw Sung Jin-Woo, who had coalesced a great amount of shadows and lightning on his fist, causing the normally blue lightning to gain a purple hue.
"Lightning Impact." Sung Jin-Woo said calmly as he punched out, throwing a large, dense pillar of purple lightning onto Antares' head. As soon as the lightning made contact with Antares, it was empowered by the jets of water, and a massive explosion happened as a result of the reaction between fire, water and lightning based mana.
Antares, for the first time since the beginning of the battle, roared out in pain. The shockwave from his roar cleared the dust from him, revealing his body, which now had different patches of torn skin and scales here and there, that were smoking from the absurdly high heat. Sung Jin-Woo frowned as he saw that his attack didn't do as much damage as he wanted.
'I need more power, enough to destroy an armored mountain with my bare hands.' He thought to himself, and his eyes widened, as if he had gained an epiphany. He cancelled all of his summons around the world, then concentrated on reforming the power of darkness within himself, while also channeling the power of lightning.
Antares, who was no longer receiving any attacks, looked at Sung Jin-Woo with widened eyes, as he felt and saw the power of darkness concentrating on him like a cyclone, with lightning streaking around his body. Antares was shocked that Sung Jin-Woo, who as far as he knew, had only gotten unrestricted access to the power of death over the past few days, was doing something as crazy as summoning the full power of death into himself.
As for Sung Jin-Woo, he was busy inspecting himself, amazed by the sheer power he had control over. He also noticed that his form was truly massive, even matching Antares in size.
*Sung Jin-Woo Shadow Armor*
The armor crackled with power as Sung Jin-Woo faced off against Antares. After a few seconds of contemplation, Antares had concluded that Sung Jin-Woo was too dangerous to be left alive, and so, mobilized all of his power to kill him, starting off with another flaming breath of destruction.
As the flames neared Sung Jin-Woo, he put his hand out and willed forth a barrage of lightning, which collided with the breath, then tore through it, before impacting Antares shortly after. After re-evaluating Sung Jin-Woo's threat level, Antares rushed him, intent on extinguishing his existence.
Sung Jin-Woo also rushed down Antares, then slammed an uppercut into his lower jaw. Antares swiped at him in retaliation, but was dodged and hit with a lightning-charged counter punch to side of his face. Their continued clashes released explosive waves of mana that could be felt all around the world.
Antares would hit Sung Jin-Woo with a powerful tail whip, only to receive a lightning charged blow from the massive armor. But this didn't mean that they were at a stalemate. On the contrary, Antares was starting to pull forward as his breaths glanced off Sung Jin-Woo's armor, while effectively destroying the parts that got hit.
So far, the upper parts of the armor's limbs had been damaged by the breaths of destruction that Antares had been firing, and the torso had received some damage on the sides, but Sung Jin-Woo pushed through the strain, as he continued to land blow after blow on Antares. Antares flew into the sky, then released 6 beams of destruction at Sung Jin-Woo, who responded by creating a dozen swords from darkness that were each over ten stories high, then launched them at the beams.
Sun Jin-Woo then fired a beam of lightning to bolster the attack power of the swords. The eventual collision released an explosive shockwave that devastated the environment around them. But even then, they knew that the battle was far from over.
The explosion, which had been suffused with Antares' power of destruction, had severely damaged Sung Jin-Woo's armor, leaving him drained of stamina. To save up on what little energy he still had, Sung Jin-Woo dissipated the armor, as he dropped to the ground heaving out breaths.
"You have impressed me. So, I will give you a chance. Join me, and I will spare this world, and even hand it to you." Antares said, as he transformed to his human form, while looking at a fatigued Sung Jin-Woo. But Sung Jin-Woo did something unexpected; he laughed. Antares didn't expect Sung Jin-Woo to agree to his proposal by any means, but he definitely didn't expect to be laughed at.
"Thank you. Now I know my preparations weren't in vain." Sung Jin-Woo said as he got into a pugilistic stance. "How foolish." Antares said, transforming once more, making his humanoid form possess draconic characteristics, while pulling forth a crimson longsword. Sung Jin-Woo pulled out one of his daggers as he prepared to clash with Antares.
The both of them dashed at each other once more, and Antares slashed down with his sword, only for Sung Jin-Woo to deflect it to the side, then unleash a barrage of punches and stabs at a rate that even Antares couldn't follow. Antares paused for an instant in shock, and Sung Jin-Woo capitalized on the opportunity, pulling out the Demon King's Longsword, and slashing upwards at Antares' right arm.
By the time Antares had cleared his mind of his shock, his right arm had already been cut off from his body, with his longsword following it. "How?" He said. "I've beaten you up like this scores of times. I'll be damned if I lose to you now." Sung Jin-Woo said, then pushed as much of his power as he could muster into the Demon King's Longsword, and used Lacerate.
The sword wave bisected Antares vertically, as well as everything behind him. As that happened, cracks manifested in the sky, and broke open to reveal multiple Gates through which winged, silver armor-wearing beings, the Rulers, came in their thousands, dyeing the sky white.
"It was you that told the Monarch of White Flames and the Monarch of Fangs to attack the Shadow Monarch." Sung Jin-Woo said to Antares, who was having the last few throes of life leave him, while he dropped to his knees with fatigue. "Did the Monarch of White Flames tell you this?" Antares asked, remembering that Ashborne had killed Baran.
"Ashborne wanted me to send you his regards." Sung Jin-Woo said, flipping Antares off from his seated position on the ground. "You bastard!" Antares shouted, wanting to attack Sung Jin-Woo, only to see a ball of purple lightning concentrating on his middle finger. "Bang." Sung Jin-Woo said calmly, then fired the lightning as a beam that destroyed Antares' head and upper torso.
It was unbelievable. Antares, the King of Dragons, Monarch of Destruction, had died. With the enmity between the Shadow Monarch and the Rulers quashed, and every other Monarch eliminated, the war between the Monarchs and the Rulers had been brought to an end.
