Twilight's Wolves

Chapter 27: Trouble

The next morning, they were eating breakfast in silence when someone knocked on their door, bringing a familiar scent.

Leah's eyebrows furrowed, "I'll answer the door," pushing out of her seat, leaving no room for argument.

Swinging the door open, she came face to face with Rachel Black.

"Hey... Leah? What are you doing here?" asked Rachel, taken aback.

Leah snorted, ready to slam the door shut, "I could ask you the same, I for one live here now, with my husband," emphasizing the word.

Rachel's eyes narrowed, not believing her for a second, she would have heard about a wedding, "I don't see a ring."

The door's edge gave way under Leah's grip, making Rachel flinch.

"Flimsy door, you should fix that," Rachel commented.

"Right," said Leah, exaggerating the word, "The door, I'll get on that, as for the ring, take a look," she said pulling it out from under her shirt.

Rachel moved closer to look, bringing the ring closer to inspect. Raising an eyebrow, "You wear your, admittedly nice ring, on a necklace string, hidden under your shirt?" she questioned.

Leah could practically feel the judgment rolling off her in waves.

"Trouble in paradise?" asked Rachel with a smirk.

That one stung as that was indeed the case due to recent events.

Leah sneered, "Not on your life Black, there's nothing for you here anymore, you left so keep it that way."

"I can see you're going through something, so I'll come back later," said Rachel taking her leave then it hit her, and she turned around, "I almost forgot, I'm sorry about your dad," she said, her face morphing into one of understanding and concern, "I'll see you later," she said with a melancholy heavy tone.

Slamming the door shut behind her, Leah accidentally cracked the frame and damaged the hinges, "Shit," cursing her blunder.

"You didn't need to treat her like that," said Dean coming up behind her to check the door.

"Of course I did, you should have seen her, the way she came traipsing back, thinking she could pick up right where she left off, not even giving me a thought," Leah ranted.

"You were close once," said Dean, pulling the jammed door out.

"That was before she left!" said Leah, still annoyed over the whole thing.

"I'm not saying you're wrong, but try and get her side of it first, you remember how she was after her mom died," said Dean, shaking his head at the damage.

"Yeah, and my dad was an afterthought on her way out!" Leah fumed, "She didn't even come to the funeral! She never even called once after she left!"

"Not everyone deals with things the same way, come on, let's go to town and order some work for the frame and a new door, then we can go for a run and get your mind off of things," said Dean.

"Sorry, I shouldn't have done that," said Leah, "And stop taking her side!"

"It's fine, shit happens," said Dean, "And I'm only being objective, I'm not taking anyone's side, you'd know if I did."

"How would I know?" questioned an irritated Leah.

"Because it would be yours," said Dean, feeding Leah's original guilt from the other day.

...

After scheduling work, and ordering a new door, Dean and Leah went for their run.

(Sam you there?) asked Dean.

(Nah, It's just me and Embry,) answered Quil.

(Hm,) Dean considered taking Quil along but thought better of it. Leah needed to blow off some steam and an audience may hamper her mood.

(I'm taking Leah for a run, we may not be back for a while,) said Dean.

(Ok,) said Quil.

(Where are we going?) asked Leah when he wouldn't stop after traveling farther than ever before.

(You need something to hit, and I'm going to provide you with a target,) said Dean.

(Do you mean...) said Leah, her thoughts running wild.

(Vampire,) Dean confirmed.

Feeling anxious, Leah's speed slowed to cruise control, blindly following his golden butt, whereas before she always showed him up with her incredible speed.

Thinking nothing of it, Dean honed his senses to find their prey.

Taking a sharp turn, Leah slowed considerably as they neared their destination.

(Can you smell them, just ahead is a group of at least four, I'll go in first, you wait for an opening,) said Dean without thought. Something he would have never attempted under normal circumstances. The subtle shift in his mind went unnoticed as his nose took in the alluring scent.

(Dean,) said Leah.

(Remember your training and everything will be fine, we were made for this,) said Dean.

(Dean,) said Leah once more.

(Oh, and don't forget If there's a gift that can affect us, we target him first,) said Dean.

(DEAN!) screamed Leah.

(Uh, what?") asked Dean, noticing Leah was no longer with him, (Where'd you go?)

(I don't think I'm ready for this,) said Leah apprehensively. Sure, she hated vampires for what they did and was more than happy to tear any apart that attacked their home, but to actively seek them out for a fight was something altogether different for her.

This Stumped him, not expecting this from Leah.

And then his stomach growled.

(Well tough shit, get your fucking ass over here and get ready unless you want to watch me fight a group alone, to think I left Quil behind for this shit,) said Dean harshly.

(Dean,) gasped a shocked Leah as she trotted into view.

(I swear to the spirits if you say my name one more time when I'm not balls deep inside you,) Dean growled, showing teeth. Cowing her wolf to the ground, tail tucked between her legs, presenting her belly instinctively.

(What's gotten into you?) asked a frightened Leah.

(What's gotten into me? what's gotten into you? Where'd all that anger go? For the redhead, for Jake, for me, for Rachel? I thought I was with a woman who had a fire in her belly that could run and fight by my side, and now here you are too afraid to face a few vamps,) Dean berated, completely losing it.

Suddenly felt said anger returning, she rolled back to her stomach though wisely stayed down below the angry golden wolf, (That's not fair, I'm going through a lot right now, and I haven't been able to catch a single fucking break, I need a break De... I need a break, it's all too fucking much okay, just too fucking much!)

Dean snorted in contempt, (Too much, is it?) his stomach growled, head snapping in the vampire's direction, the scent fading, (Then you should go back, I'll stay and deal with this, I'm used to being on my own.)

Head lowering sadly, she suddenly heard the unusual rumbling. Ears perking up, she caught the distinct sounds of her mate's stomach, (Dean... are you being hangry right now?) she asked, grasping for anything that could explain what was happening.

(Did you just say hangry?) asked Dean, tilting his head cutely, momentarily brought out of his one-track mind.

(Yeah, I put hunger and anger together, I remember back at the funeral when the hunger started getting to you, is that what's happening right now?) asked Leah with a bit of hope and concern.

His stomach growled louder still as the scent grew ever fainter.

(Look I don't have time for this, I need to go,) said Dean taking off.

Feeling she was onto something Leah got up and went after him. There was no way she would let this relationship fall apart because of this. She wasn't above fighting for him, whether it be vampires, stomach aches, or the spirits themselves. You don't just throw away years of bliss because of a couple of bad days.
