Chapter 2: Stepmother troubles

Mikayla's POV

I got up early the next morning. My alarm went off at five thirty. I got dressed in a T-shirt and jeans before pulling my browning hoodie on over. I pulled my hair back in a ponytail, then went to the kitchen to fix my brother's and dad's lunch.

Then I got them up and heard dad up. I fixed the boy's breakfast and fixed Dad a plate. I looked up, surprised to see Katharine up. "Your father is making me get a job in this Podunk town." She told me.

Dad got his plate and the boys got theirs. I fixed mine and sat down with them. Katharine looked confused. "Where's my plate?" She asked. "Didn't know how to fix it," I told her.

She's had two marriages before my dad. Almost every day, I wonder why my dad even stays with her. Probably because of the twins. I checked the time and went to brush my teeth.

Then the boys hurried to brush theirs. Dad finished his breakfast, already dressed. Once he was done, we headed out the door. "Wait, we forgot your mother." He said. "She's still in the bath," I told him.

"She will have a personal alarm set. If she ignores it twice, then she will be sleeping with the cows." Dad told me. He's finally had enough of this?

We dropped the boys off at their school before dad dropped me off. I found Ginger, and we walked to the building.

October 25

I got to school and was greeted by Ginger again. Every day since my second day here has been cool. She introduced me to her friends and boyfriend before the day was over.

We walked into the first hour and took our seats. Her boyfriend came in a few seconds later and sat in front of her. "Jax is back." He whispered to her.

She looked at him, then back at me. Several guys came in a few seconds before the bell. The teacher came in and took roll. Soon after, he passed out a worksheet. The door opened, and a guy came in. He gave a piece of paper to the teacher before walking over this way.

He sat at the desk behind me. Ginger's boyfriend was glaring at him.

Jax's POV

Bryce wouldn't stop glaring at me. He finally turned around when Mr. Hason continued. I went ahead and started on it.

Mikayla's POV

The bell rang, signaling that class was over. I gathered my things and put them in my bag before slinging it onto my shoulder. I walked with Ginger to our next class, seeing the same guy who sat behind me following.

"Oh, that's Jax. He's already been suspended nine times this year." She told me. I turned to face her. "And he's not afraid to be suspended again because he hates school. He'd rather be on his homestead out at Triple R," She whispered.

"You know I can hear you, Ging." We both turned quickly. There he was right behind us. "As much as I hate school and want to be on the ranch, I have to be at school. It's required by my parents." He told her.

"Yeah, and if Bryce catches you talking to me, he'd take you out to the parking lot and leave you unrecognizable." She told him. "You and I both know that I was talking to this sweet girl." He said, moving closer to me.

I stepped away. "Did I mention that word gets around school fast?" She asked. He moved to the other side of me. "I'm just talking to her, though." He testified.

"What did I say about talking to my girl, Ray?" He turned quickly and looked forward again. "I was talking to her." He said, pointing at me. "Do you even know her name?" Bryce asked him.

I shook my head. "Pardon my rudeness. I'm Jax." "So you're the notorious Jax almost everyone has been talking about," I said. He shrugged. "Nothing has been kept quiet in this town for long. My school rep is one thing everyone knows about." He said.

Once we reached the class, Bryce let both of us go in before he went in before Jax. I sat down next to her, and again, Bryce sat in front of her while Jax sat behind me.

Several guys came over and sat around Jax. "Dude, you made it back before Eric could claim another girl." One said. "Do I look like I care about what girls Eric gets?" Jax asked.

"Dude, chill. There's no reason to get harsh." Another said. "Oh, sorry. I almost got expelled. Why don't I just rat you out next time you decide to fuck something up?" Jax told the guy.

"Oh, so you do want to be expelled. Why don't you just fight me? Right here. Right now." The second guy said, standing up. "I don't fight in front of girls," Jax said, jumping up.

"Especially ones that are new and ones that are my friends." He added. "Then you don't have the balls to do it." The second guy said. "The parking lot after school. You try to jump me, I'll tell the whole school how you're weak." Jax told him.

"Ooh, so pretty boy doesn't want expelled." The guy said. Then punched Jax. I was out of the way as he stumbled back. "Mr. Harmon, Office now." Jax caught the look in my eyes and sat down as the guy walked out of the room, slamming the door.

After class, I saw Jax still rubbing his jaw. "Are you going to need ice for that?" I asked him. A smile played on my lips. "Nah, my cousin punches harder than that. I'll live." He said.

"I don't think I caught your name." He added. "Mikayla," I told him. "How exactly is it spelled, because what I'm told it's several different ways." He said. "M. I. K. A. Y. L. A." I replied.

"Never heard it that way before."
