Chapter 2: Chapter 2. Floating Lights
Asano Hatsuki had eyes slightly unclosed. The sparse light hit her irises and so she closed her lids. Her entire body ached as though she had tumbled through rocks and mountains. Arms felt heavy and legs unfathomable.
Drowning in the pain, she started to lose consciousness again but this time, she tried to open her eyes. Adjusting to the lights better, she could see the ceiling on top of her. The sepia vault was similar to the dream she had.
'Dream?' Hatsuki thought. Wasn't she on a train to Guilin? Eh?
"I miss having you here, ai" Hatsuki whispered while staring at her phone screen. She was on a high-speed train to Guilin. It had been almost five hours and although the scenery had been picturesque, at times her mind dwelled on the little cat she had left behind.
Next to her was a woman with a little toddler in her arms and a little child on her thighs, placing the head on the mother's sore arms. The toddler was calmly asleep and so was the mother and the child.
"Just three hours more" She muttered while still enjoying the view. They were at the foot of a hill. High up at an incredible speed but all of a sudden, there was a slight hunch from the front of the train.
The little smile on her face morphed into a horrible scream waking up the sleeping passengers. The train had started to fall into the air and then the water body instead of being on the railway track.
"Wa-??!! AHhh??!" People started shouting and even the children started to cry.
Worried, Hatsuki's eyes widened, and her lips parted, breathing heavily while palms tightly gripping her seat. 'Why now? WHY?' it was terrible. Regrettable and scary.
"WAAA" Even the toddler next to her started to scream from the noise and only then did Hatsuki turn her head to the side. Her spirling thoughts, tied to a loose threat, kept her together.
"Aunty… I think- Can I have a little sister? You should try holding on to the little one. If not we will all…" Agitation hit her. The ending words were the cruelest anticipation of their situation but even if she died, those little ones deserved to live!
So, Hatsuki took hold of the younger child who was about four years old and asked her to hold her breath while caressing the child's hair. Soon the train dipped inside the water and the air in their lungs gave out. Making her blackout.
"Is this a hospital?" her voice came out coarse, but no one was around her.
Suddenly someone knocked at the door filling up the silence. The light from the candle flickered. Hatsuki turned her neck to the side while whispering "Come in"
The door slid and a young woman who had her face covered with a white paper gave a bow. She brought the tray forward and then stood up. Closing the door, the woman took a seat next to Hatsuki and placed the tray on the tiny circular table between them.
"Good evening, Miss. Is there anything you would like to have?" The woman had utmost politeness. Her every manner was cautious and even hand gestures were precise. She wore a traditional robe covering her knees and the horse face skirt underneath her.
Hatsuki parted her lips. Feeling her throat become like sandpaper she replied "Water".
The woman took the kettle and cup from the tray. Pouring the piping hot water on the cup which had a seaweed green gradience.
The maid informed "Doctor Chirtora has requested that you take rest and take these medicines three times a day after having a meal. May I bring the meal?"
"Eh," Hatsuki mumbled while gently straightening her back. Her body felt crumbly as though any sharp movements would break her apart. The maid swiftly stood up and pressed her palm at her back, supporting her to the wooden bed frame.
"Please have this" The maid brought the cup of water to Hatsuki. Her finger tremoured while taking hold of the cup. Hatsuki gave one last glance to the maid and then, she drank the water, hoping it wasn't poisoned.
While the maid walked out, Hatsuki closed her eyes while feeling the warmth of the cup. This wasn't a hospital for sure and from the attires, language and decorations, it probably wasn't her era either.
'Did I get transmigrated to the past? How am I able to speak their language? Should I run away?' Countless questions floated around her mind and yet she didn't have an answer to any of them. But one thing was for sure. She had died in the human world.
"Knock, Knock" Once again, someone knocked at the paper-thin sliding door.
Opening her eyelids, Hatsuki answered "Come inside" her voice feeling better than before.
The maid walked in but this time she brought a tray full of side dishes and rice. The aroma of freshly cooked vegetables and meat filled up the entire room, clearing up the doubts in Hatsuki's heart.
"Please have this while I prepare your medicine" said the maid as she placed a little table over Hatsuki's blanket. Placing the tray of food, she gave a bow and once again left.
There was a bowl of plain white rice, chicken soup, some stir-fired spinach with garlic and cabbage with peas. Not wasting a single second, she dug right in. Mixing the vegetables with the rice while having the soup in between.
By the end of the meal, her stomach was full, and her reluctance had been cleared. 'No wait… What if it was poisonous?! I just hope it isn't' she thought to herself while her eyes pried down, expressing worry.
"Knock, Knock" someone knocked on the door, but Hatsuki was sure it was the maid. "Come in" She replied while taking tiny sips of the water. As expected, the maid had once again returned but this time she had a cup in her hands.
Hatsuki suspiciously gawked at the cup, unsure of the maid and the surroundings.
"It's time for you to have medicine miss" The maid handed the cup which had a reddish liquid. It emitted a specific smell of chemicals which made Hatsuki turn away. Meanwhile, the maid quickly took the tray and the table.
"Do I have to take this medicine? Can't I just-"
"Miss, you have to drink it. It's the order from the master"
"Who's the master? I've never known him"
"Master is the one who saved you at the Lake of Riot miss. Else you'd have become a resting spirit instead of a human, so please have the medicine" The maid replied.
'A spirit? What kind of world is this?!' Hatsuki couldn't believe what she was hearing. Or perhaps, she could just act like drinking the medicine but throw it out later, right?
Like a docile young woman, she took the medicine cup and tried to drink it all at once but the moment it touched her tongue, Hatsuki lost consciousness.
