Chapter 177 - Fame Across the Continent
Sensing its master’s fierce battle intent and murderous aura, the Violet Thunder Sword emitted a resonant hum.
A sword destined to kill—yearning for the baptism of blood more than any other weapon!
As the cloaked and masked figure moved closer to the heart of the tribulation clouds, a sudden sense of dread gripped his heart. From within the dense lightning, a figure emerged. The first thing visible was a pair of eyes—cold and merciless. Despite being a Golden Core cultivator himself, the intruder felt an icy shiver as though he might be dragged into the depths of hell at any moment.
How was this possible? This boy, newly ascended to the Golden Core stage and supposedly weakened by the tribulation lightning, couldn’t possibly pose a threat to him!
Convincing himself that Chi Changye was merely bluffing to scare him off, the black-clad figure sneered, “Chi brat, the road to heaven was open, yet you chose not to take it. Now you barge into hell’s gate—let me send you on your way!”
Without hesitation, he launched an attack.
In a flash, the Violet Thunder Sword darted to its master’s front. Chi Changye gripped it firmly, and in that instant, the surrounding tribulation energy was completely absorbed. Even the clouds above were pulled downward.
“Crack!”
“Boom!”
A thunderous roar echoed from the direction of the tribulation. Students still scrambling for safety turned to witness a sword gleaming with lightning, dragging a massive thunderball behind it. The scene resembled the splitting of primordial chaos at the birth of the world as the attack hurtled toward the masked assailant with devastating force.
“That’s Senior Brother Chi’s counterattack!” someone exclaimed in awe.
“Senior Brother Chi is unharmed! He’s perfectly fine!”
The collision of two attacks unleashed a deafening explosion, causing beasts across the Qiuqiu Mountain Range to flee in terror, burying their heads in caves as they trembled. ‘What demon god had descended upon them?’
In that moment, every cultivator present lost their senses, overwhelmed by the sheer force and terror.
“Aaaah!”
A scream erupted from the center of the blast. As vision returned, a black figure was seen hurtling backward. Gu Yao swiftly leaped onto his pre-prepared flying artifact and shot out like lightning, yelling, “Attack!”
The black kitten had been ready too, moving just as fast as its master. Despite its usual antagonism toward Chi Changye, no outsider had the right to bully him—especially not someone who attacked but ended up being beaten so miserably. The kitten let out a strange gurgling sound, unmistakably mocking.
Elder Yi hesitated briefly but quickly followed. He had expected Gu Yao to lose composure, but instead, Gu Yao displayed utmost confidence in Chi Changye. With the traps already set, how could that despicable masked figure escape the academy’s territory?
Good—if he didn’t die, they would at least peel a few layers of skin off him, perhaps even cripple his cultivation entirely.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!”
Explosive lightning talismans collided with the shattering jade bottles, releasing toxic vapors that enveloped the cloaked attacker. Black mists swirled around him instantly.
The masked man seethed with rage, coughing up blood on the spot. A dignified Golden Core cultivator—once standing at the pinnacle of Tianlin Continent—had now been humiliated by a newly advanced Golden Core junior and assaulted by Foundation Establishment disciples. His fury boiled as he reached to capture Gu Yao.
He recognized this boy. Eliminating him would ensure Chi Changye couldn’t withstand the remaining tribulation strikes. Destroying him would also deal a heavy blow to the Tianfu Academy and the cultivation world of Tianlin Continent.
“Meow! Meow!”
A massive beast materialized in the air, shielding Gu Yao with its body. It swiped a claw, dispersing the energy-formed giant hand. Elder Yi, now in position, decisively hurled another barrage of talismans and toxin bottles toward the masked figure, disregarding his status. Seeing his disheveled appearance, the Golden Core cultivator didn’t seem so untouchable anymore.
“Boom! Boom! Boom!”
More cultivators rushed to support Elder Yi. Before they could act, anguished screams echoed repeatedly. The previously arrogant masked man now appeared utterly pitiful—his body scorched and battered, blackened and bloodied in places. Even if his mask fell off, his disfigured face would likely render him unrecognizable.
Realizing he was about to be overwhelmed by Foundation Establishment cultivators, the masked man clenched his teeth and activated a blood escape technique, burning his essence blood to transform into a red flash that disappeared into the distance.
“Have the guts to stay and fight for 300 more rounds!” roared a furious elder from the Martial Peak.
“Enough shouting,” someone reminded. “Dean Yu still has another opponent over there.”
The group quickly turned toward the secret realm entrance, where another Golden Core cultivator was battling Dean Yu. However, by the time they arrived, that assailant had fled as well. Witnessing his companion’s miserable defeat, he knew staying would bring no advantage. With only himself left, retreating to regroup was his only choice.
Golden Core cultivators, when uninjured and intent on escaping, are nearly impossible to capture even by fellow Golden Core cultivators without adequate preparation. Thus, yet another one managed to flee.
“Cowards!” the Martial Peak elder roared in frustration, arriving just in time to see the tail end of the fleeing figure.
“Let it go,” another elder advised. “Forcing a fight might cause unnecessary chaos, potentially alarming those inside the secret places.” The array formations protecting the realm were stable, and the two individuals within hadn’t reached a critical breakthrough. Thus, the tribulation storm had not yet affected them—but continued combat above the secret realm could change that.
Dean Yu calmed the cultivators who had come to assist and then asked, “How is Chi Changye? Stay by his side and prevent any more disturbances—the final stage is critical.”
“Don’t worry, Dean. That kid’s a beast!” Martial Peak members especially admired Chi Changye, though they regretted that such a powerful fighter had joined Sword Peak instead of their faction. They blamed Elder Yi for snatching him up first.
Despite this rivalry, Martial Peak cultivators deeply respected strength. Chi’s prowess earned their admiration, even though he was soon to surpass them and become their senior after completing the tribulation—a somewhat awkward realization given how they had always treated him as a junior.
Gu Yao collapsed onto the ground after unleashing a round of attacks, panting heavily. The black kitten nudged him with its large head.
Gu Yao smiled and stroked its head. “Good job. That bastard must’ve learned his lesson by now. Brother Ye will handle the rest.”
They were determined to dig out the intruder even if they had to search every inch of land. With the potency of Gu Yao’s toxins, the attacker might already be succumbing to the poison by the time they found him.
However, glancing at the damaged surroundings, Gu Yao’s hand paused, and he chuckled bitterly. The excessive use of toxic agents had devastated the area, creating lasting environmental damage. Unless he personally remedied the situation, it could take decades to recover, affecting the academy’s residents in the meantime.
“You reap what you sow,” he muttered wryly.
—
News spread rapidly across Tianlin Continent that another Tianfu Academy cultivator had successfully formed a Golden Core and overcome the tribulation. Many spoke excitedly about the dramatic events that had transpired.
“Two Golden Core cultivators invaded the academy during Chi Senior’s tribulation, hoping to strike while he was vulnerable. But they underestimated his unparalleled talent. Even when facing a tribulation many times more powerful than usual, he remained composed and turned the lightning against the attackers, crippling them. Whether they can even maintain their Golden Core cultivation is doubtful.”
“Exactly! You can’t imagine how powerful Chi Senior is. Witnesses say he controlled the tribulation lightning itself, using it to blast one of the invaders away. The remaining strikes were weakened to the point that even Foundation Establishment cultivators could withstand them.”
“Exaggeration? Nonsense! Just because you can’t do it doesn’t mean others can’t. Before the ambush, Chi Senior split the tribulation lightning with a single sword strike and used its energy to cultivate. No one else can achieve that! Witnesses even saw him hurling a giant lightning ball at the attackers. If that’s not controlling the tribulation, what is?”
“I bet Chi Senior already knew someone would ambush him. That’s why he pretended to calmly undergo the tribulation earlier—to lull them into a false sense of security. Otherwise, he might have scattered the entire tribulation cloud with a single sword strike, haha!”
“I’ve decided! From today, I’m switching to sword cultivation. No one can stop me. I’m determined to follow in Chi Senior’s footsteps!”
The entire Tianlin Continent went wild, sparking a sword cultivation craze.
Jiang Yan and Lu Qiusheng quickly sold out their stock and placed large orders with multiple blacksmith workshops to urgently craft swords designed for sword cultivators. Even within the academy, many students carried swords on their backs or in their hands, as if simply possessing a sword brought them closer to Chi Changye and allowed them to absorb even a trace of his sword cultivator aura.
On Martial Peak, several students demanded to transfer to Sword Peak, prompting the elders to personally discipline the most vocal ones with a severe thrashing.
While the outside world idolized Chi Changye, regarding him as the foremost figure on Tianlin Continent, few knew what he was currently doing.
Lu Qiusheng squatted by the roadside, staring at the boundary line marked by Gu Yao, warning no one to cross. The poison inside the line was dangerously potent, while the area outside was slightly safer.
Within the boundary, Chi Changye and Gu Yao were diligently spraying antidote solutions to neutralize and dissolve the toxic agents.
Thinking of the frenzy outside and comparing it to this scene, Lu Qiusheng laughed so hard he collapsed, sitting down and clutching his stomach as it ached from laughter.
“Chi Brother, Gu Yao! They’re here!” Tian Feirong and the chubby boy came sprinting over, hauling a large batch of materials for antidote preparation.
Gu Yao hadn’t anticipated needing so much, and his limited stock of detoxification pills quickly ran out. The mixture of various toxic agents had fused into even more potent poisons, making it essential to concoct antidotes on the spot.
