Chapter 104: The Beast's charge!
"Spread out!" Jin yelled. He drew both of his swords in one swift motion—snap-clack!—the sound echoing through the cracked stone walls of the arena.
But his command came a moment too late.
One of the students—a young swordsman—froze on the spot. His eyes widened in fear as the monstrous Ironback stormed forward.
The beast didn't slow down. With a brutal charge, it slammed its massive, armored shoulder into the frozen student like a battering ram.
"AHHHH—!!"
The student was launched into the air and crashed hard into a pile of broken stone near the wall. Dust exploded from the impact. His sword clattered uselessly across the floor.
Veyla screamed when he was knocked off by the beast.
Jin's eyes flared. "I said spread out!" he shouted again, but this time his voice held more frustration than anger. It wasn't that he was mad—he was scared for them.
"You freeze like that again, and you'll die! MOVE!"
The rest of the team finally reacted.
Weapons were drawn. Feet scrambled. The group fanned out around the arena like a formation drilled into them during training—but now, it was real.
Life and death.
The tank stepped up to face the Ironback. His heavy armor clinked as he moved, planting his giant tower shield firmly into the ground with a thud.
"I'll hold it off!" he said, using himself for the impact.
But Jin shook his head. "No. You're not holding it off. You're just slowing it down. That thing's hide is too thick. Don't try to fight it head-on. Just buy us time."
"Let me think of its weak point."
The tank clenched his jaw, clearly not happy about it, but he nodded. "Understood."
The Ironback was enormous—its body covered in cracked, iron-like armor, thick plates jutting out from its back like jagged blades.
Its glowing red eyes scanned the group, snorting like a bull before lowering its head, ready to charge again.
Earlier, they had stepped on ancient pressure tiles—traps meant to be avoided.
Someone—Jin didn't know who yet—must've stepped on one without realizing it, and that was what triggered the beast. These ruins weren't just dead stone and puzzles—they were a living trap.
One wrong step, and things like this happened.
Jin's mind raced.
They had seconds before the next charge.
"Use the archer and take the high ground!" Jin barked. "Mage—flank left and prepare a binding spell! Don't aim to kill yet—we test its reactions first!"
The mage quickly moved, his staff already crackling with arcane light.
The archer sprinted toward a cracked pillar, climbing it nimbly and drawing an arrow.
The healer, Veyla, knelt beside the fallen swordsman, glowing hands trembling as she poured healing mana into his chest.
Jin turned back toward the Ironback.
This wasn't going to be easy.
But they weren't going to be easy.
Not if he had anything to say about it.
"Fire Lances—burst!" the mage shouted, voice ringing with urgency.
A cluster of flaming spears appeared in the air above her, spinning rapidly before launching like missiles toward the charging beast. With a loud boom, they collided with the Ironback's metallic armor, erupting in flashes of orange and red flames.
But when the smoke cleared, the beast stood firm.
Its armor, scorched but barely scratched, shimmered in the heat.
"It's not working!" the mage gasped, her hands trembling. "It's… absorbing the fire! The damn thing's made of metal!"
"Then we'll stop holding back," Jin muttered, narrowing his eyes.
He launched forward in a burst of speed—so fast he was nearly a blur. His twin swords gleamed in his grip. As he ran, he lowered his stance, preparing to strike.
With a powerful leap, Jin soared through the air and spun his body mid-flight. He brought down Steel Ember, his left sword, in a sharp, curved arc aimed at the Ironback's neck joint.
Clang!
The blade struck—and bounced off with a high-pitched ring. The metal plates were too dense.
The Ironback let out a furious roar, twisting its massive body as it swiped its tail toward Jin, trying to fling him off.
But Jin flipped over its back, landing behind it with catlike balance.
"Go for the legs!" he said. "Strike the joints—forget the armor!"
The archer responded instantly. "On it!" she shouted.
She drew her bow and loosed a flurry of arrows in rapid succession. One after another, the bolts cut through the air and targeted the creature's knees and back tendons—the exposed gaps between its thick armor plates.
Thunk!
Thunk!
Some of the arrows hit their mark, burying deep into the soft spots behind the Ironback's joints.
The monster roared in pain, jerking its body as the first signs of real damage appeared.
"Nice shot!" Jin called out, not looking back as he prepared his next move.
But the Ironback was enraged now. It twisted around and charged—this time aiming straight at the mage who had first launched the fire attack.
"Veyla! Go and support!" Jin commanded, not missing a beat.
The healer, Veyla, didn't hesitate.
She raised both arms. "Resonant Bloom!" she shouted.
A warm, emerald light burst from her palms, wrapping around the mage's body like a protective shield.
The spell amplified her reflexes and steadied her mind, allowing her to leap aside just in time to dodge the Ironback's crushing charge.
The mage rolled across the floor, narrowly avoiding the beast's slam.
But then, something changed.
The Ironback suddenly halted, its glowing red eyes locking on a new target—Veyla.
The soft glow of her spell had drawn its attention.
The beast turned slowly, stomping heavily, cracking tiles beneath its feet as it shifted focus to the healer.
Jin's heart skipped a beat.
"Damn it. It's targeting the support!"
"NO!" his heart pounding in his chest as he saw the beast rush toward Veyla. Time seemed to slow. His eyes widened. She was still standing there—frozen.
"Veyla—get back!" he roared, fear mixing with urgency.
The Ironback let out a deep, grinding snarl and surged forward with terrifying speed. Its claws scraped sparks against the stone floor, and its massive horn lowered like a battering ram.
The monster wasn't just charging—it was aiming to knock her.
But Jin was faster.
