Chapter 304: Chapter 304: Kenjaku’s Retreat
A thin layer of frost began forming on the ground at a speed visible to the naked eye, quickly spreading toward Itadori Yuji and Hayato.
"Miss Nitta, Mr. Ijichi, you two need to get out of here now!"
Fushiguro Megumi shouted as he bent down and pressed his hand to the ground.
The shadow beneath him expanded, and an owl-like shikigami emerged from it, flapping its wings and lifting him into the sky.
"Understood. Please be careful," Ijichi Kiyotaka replied quickly. He knew very well that as support personnel with little fighting ability, staying would only drag the students down.
"But the barrier group…" Nitta Akari still looked hesitant.
"It's fine. Losing one support won't cause the barrier to collapse. Right now, your safety comes first!"
"Alright…"
The two of them quickly ran into the barrier.
The enemy sorcerers had already blocked the way back. Rather than risk being attacked while escaping, it was safer to retreat inside.
Besides, Yukinoshita Yukino had already cleared out all the curses in this area of Ginza. There was little chance of running into another one.
Uraume didn't pay any attention to the two leaving.
Her face was icy, her eyes colder still, as she looked at those still standing in front of her. She said flatly, "You really don't value your lives. I let you live last time, but this time… I'll bury you all in ice."
As soon as she finished speaking, a wave of biting cold swept over everyone like a crashing tide.
Except for Fushiguro Megumi, who hovered in the air on his owl shikigami, the three on the ground were hit by the freezing chill. A thin layer of frost formed on their bodies, and the cold seeped deep into their muscles and bones, leaving them stiff and barely able to move.
"Ugh… so cold!" Kugisaki Nobara said through chattering teeth.
She looked down with difficulty. The frost under her feet was getting thicker, and she could feel cursed energy pulsing through it.
She knew an attack was coming, but with her body frozen stiff, she could barely move.
"Fools who know nothing!"
A calm voice came from behind. Several winged frogs shot out their tongues, wrapped around the frozen trio, and pulled them out of danger.
A second later, sharp ice spikes burst out of the ground where they had just been standing.
Nue and Toad had been merged into a new shikigami—an expansion technique of the Ten Shadows Technique.
But because of this, Fushiguro Megumi fell back down to the ground.
"I didn't expect you to come down from the sky yourself. Saved me the trouble of dragging you down."
A cold voice came from behind him, and the spiky-haired boy's eyes suddenly narrowed.
In Uraume's hand was a sharp dagger made of ice, held in a reverse grip as she thrust it toward Fushiguro Megumi's head.
A faint slicing sound cut through the air. His body moved on instinct, ducking just in time to dodge the surprise attack from behind.
He swept his leg cleanly, knocking the white-haired girl off balance. Then, he spun around and threw a punch, packed with layered cursed energy, sending her flying. At the same time, he caught the ice dagger that had fallen from her hand and flung it toward her retreating figure.
The smooth and seamless counterattack was entirely Fushiguro Megumi's reflex.
The spiky-haired boy stared blankly as the ice dagger he threw caught up with the flying Uraume and stabbed deep into her stomach.
A patch of red quickly spread across her clothes.
"Whoa."
Itadori Yuji and the other two stood there stunned, mouths wide open, then suddenly started clapping.
"Fushiguro, when did you get this strong?" Itadori Yuji asked in amazement.
Fushiguro Megumi felt incredibly embarrassed, gritting his teeth as he turned to glare at them. "Hey, cut it out! You're making it awkward!"
The moves he had just shown were from memories of his real father, Toji Fushiguro, teaching him martial arts.
But he hadn't fully understood or accepted those memories yet. His body had simply moved on its own, driven by instinct. It didn't feel like something he himself had done.
It felt like it belonged to... another Fushiguro Megumi.
So that's it... a parallel world!
After a brief pause, Fushiguro Megumi finally understood.
But there was no time to process the extra memories. Uraume, who had been punched away, had already pulled the ice dagger out of her stomach. Her wound was fully healed by reversed cursed technique, and she stood up like she hadn't been hurt at all.
From the look in her eyes, it was clear Fushiguro's counterattack had made her angry.
"Ice Formation Technique: Direct Drop!" Uraume crouched down and pressed her right hand to the ground.
The ground lit up with a bluish glow. Spikes of ice burst out and spread quickly toward Fushiguro Megumi.
He jumped back to dodge, but just as the spikes reached him, they suddenly grew larger, like a mountain of ice rising from the ground, trapping him inside.
The spikes kept spreading, freezing Itadori Yuji, Kugisaki Nobara, and Yoshino Junpei as well.
Then the ice shot upward into the air and shattered suddenly, breaking into countless sharp shards that rained down like knives on the frozen four below.
*Clap!*
A crisp clapping sound echoed through the empty street.
The ice shards fell and shattered the icy spikes coming from the ground—but Itadori Yuji and the others had vanished.
Itadori looked around at the sudden change of scenery. After a short pause, he realized what had happened and turned around, pleasantly surprised. "Todo!"
Next to him, a muscular man stood with his hands still in a clapping position, eyes closed, head tilted back, wearing a deeply moved expression.
No one really knew what he was getting emotional about.
Todo Aoi suddenly barged in, and Uraume's face instantly twisted with frustration.
At that moment, a playful voice rang out.
"Oh? Looks like I walked into a party."
On a nearby rooftop, a man with long blue hair and stitches all over his face stepped onto the railing, grinning wide.
"Mind if I join the fun?"
The white dragon charged forward with unstoppable force, roaring as it slammed into the enemy.
The rooftop, already in bad shape, couldn't hold up under the clash of the sorcerers anymore. With a loud crash, it gave way.
High in the sky, Kenjaku rode on a manta ray-shaped cursed spirit, smiling.
"Suguru Geto, even if you've come back from the dead, the years I've had with your body and technique put me ahead."
"If I'm not wrong, the cursed spirits you've stored are about the same as they were years ago, right?"
"We both use cursed spirit manipulation, but I have way more spirits, and they're better too. You're not on my level."
"You let loose a ton of cursed spirits over in Ginza, don't pretend otherwise," Geto scoffed. "And acting like you've already won before the fight even starts? That's just arrogant."
The rainbow dragon burst back out of a building wall it had crashed through, roaring so loud it shook the night.
The manta ray couldn't match the dragon's speed, but it was more agile. The two chased each other through the sky for a while before the dragon caught up, biting down and sinking its fangs deep into both of the cursed spirit's wings.
With a flick of its head, the dragon tore the manta ray in half. Its body broke into glowing sparks and scattered through the air.
Kenjaku fell from the sky toward the ground, the dragon twisting and turning behind him in pursuit.
But the man wearing another's face didn't panic. Calmly, he waved a hand and spread a wide black ripple across the ground.
A massive hand reached out from the ripple, grabbed the charging dragon like it was nothing more than a snake, and slammed it hard into the street.
Cracks spread out like a spider web. The dragon cried out in pain, thrashing wildly in the grip of the enormous hand, which looked big enough to crush a building. But it couldn't break free.
Then, another giant hand reached out, planting itself on the ground and lifting up a massive, mountain-sized body from the black ripple.
The cursed spirit was huge. It wore a tattered monk's robe like a vest, and a string of prayer beads wrapped around its wrists.
Its head looked like a bull's, with horns on the sides, but its nose was like an elephant's trunk. Big eyes sat on either side of its head, and in the center of its forehead was a cross-shaped glowing mark.
"A curse born from Asian deities," Kenjaku said, standing before the towering cursed spirit, looking up at Geto above. "It clears away anything in its path. It's a special grade curse tied to the concept of targeting, and I imported it from overseas. Not bad, huh?"
"Not bad," Geto replied.
Behind him, black ripples opened up too, and countless squid-like cursed spirits shot out like bullets, turning into beams of light as they blasted toward the huge cursed spirit and Kenjaku.
The cursed spirit blocked all the beams. It roared in pain, then swung one of its huge hands. The next round of beams seemed to bend mid-air, scattering in all directions instead of hitting their target. None of them could touch the cursed spirit or the Kenjaku it protected.
Did it not work?
Geto narrowed his eyes at the deflected attack.
"See? I told you," Kenjaku said with a shrug and a helpless smile.
Suddenly, time seemed to freeze. The space around them turned into an icy blue barrier.
A soft voice whispered from nearby.
"Hey, do you think I look pretty?"
He sighed again in frustration. "This trick again, huh."
Against a special-grade cursed spirit that could forcefully lock onto a target, it couldn't really be seen as something that could be removed like a regular obstacle—but he'd already seen this move on a different timeline.
"Ugly."
As soon as he finished speaking, Kenjaku activated the gravity technique from Kaori Itadori, pinning down the special-grade cursed spirit that had suddenly appeared beside him.
He couldn't destroy it, but it was enough to break the cursed technique.
"So that woman was you too!"
Seeing the familiar technique, Suguru Geto's eyes narrowed sharply.
"No need to be surprised. In the long history of sorcerers, I've had many names. That was just one of my many identities."
Kenjaku smiled calmly, but the arrogance in his voice was impossible to miss.
Living for over a thousand years gave him plenty of reasons to be proud.
"I see."
Suguru Geto jumped down from the fourth floor. As soon as he landed, two snake-like cursed spirits lunged at Kenjaku in front of him.
But they were blocked by the special-grade cursed spirit behind him, veering off course and crashing into the buildings on either side of the street.
In the cloud of dust, Suguru Geto suddenly appeared behind Kenjaku.
He threw a punch charged with cursed energy, which Kenjaku casually blocked with a raised hand, though the impact still pushed him sideways a few steps.
Suguru Geto rushed in right after. The two traded punches, switching back and forth between attack and defense. Despite Geto's impressive hand-to-hand skills, he still couldn't gain the upper hand against Kenjaku.
In fact, he was slowly getting pushed back.
"You seem pretty confident in your fighting skills."
Kenjaku said casually. He raised his knee and blocked Geto's whip-like kick, then followed up with a heavy kick to the side of Geto's right knee, knocking him off balance. The next moment, a flurry of punches rained down on Geto's chest.
The combo ended with a sudden burst of cursed energy that sent Geto flying.
He flew through the air like a cut kite and crashed hard onto the road. After rolling a couple of times, he finally managed to stop himself and stand up, looking a mess.
Kenjaku looked at the unsteady Geto and curled his lips into a mocking smile.
He motioned him to come again. "Come on—ugh!"
Blood burst into the air.
With a loud impact, Kenjaku vanished from where he stood in an instant.
Geto looked up in surprise.
"So you're the one he sent me to deal with." A tall, muscular man with black hair let out a breath. The strands of hair hanging over his forehead swayed slightly, revealing a sharp pair of eyes. "You all look the same. Guess I didn't stab the wrong guy."
A strangely-shaped short blade had pierced through Kenjaku's throat, pinning him to the wall.
"Kh… kh-kh…!"
Kenjaku's eyes widened. He seemed like he wanted to say something, but with his throat pierced, no sound came out.
Zenin Toji… you came back to life too!?
Zenin Toji showing up here was something Kenjaku hadn't expected at all—let alone the sudden sneak attack.
"Sorry, I go by Fushiguro now," the black-haired man grinned, as if he had read Kenjaku's mind.
Kenjaku shakily reached out and grabbed the strong arm holding the blade, forcing himself to activate the gravity technique.
Toji was instantly crushed to the ground by the massive force, and Kenjaku also collapsed sideways. A black Uzumaki opened up and swallowed him whole, then closed shut immediately.
"Tch, he actually got away?"
Several seconds passed before Fushiguro Toji finally pushed himself up from the ground, spitting out a mouthful of blood with an annoyed look.
Then, carrying the Inverted Spear of Heaven on his shoulder, he turned to look at Geto Suguru, still frozen in shock in his Jujutsu High uniform. "Hayashizaki's job is done. I'm out."
"Wait...!"
Seeing Toji turn with the weapon and start to leave, Geto finally snapped out of it and quickly shouted.
"Huh? What now?"
"That guy has the Prison Realm on him. Gojo is sealed inside..."
Geto trailed off halfway through the sentence. He didn't know what reason he could give to get Toji to help him take it back from Kenjaku.
"Hah?" Toji raised an eyebrow. "Gojo Satoru actually got sealed? Pfft..."
He couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"You want me to help you take back the Prison Realm?"
Before Geto could answer, Toji spoke first. "Sure, I can help. But do you even know where that guy ran off to?"
"Ah, don't get the wrong idea. I'm not doing this to help you. I just don't want to leave halfway and get dragged back in later."
"I... I see..." Geto was surprised at how unexpectedly cooperative he was. After a pause, he nodded. "He's using my body. I can vaguely sense where he is."
"Then let's go."
"Fill me in on what's going on while we walk. From the looks of it, you must've died and come back too, right?"
Weird...
