Vol. 1 - Ch. 393 - From Beginning to End
When Han YunXi opened her eyes, it was already the next morning.
Beside her, Xia XiaoXi was still sound asleep, seemingly unaware of what had happened the previous night.
Han YunXi rubbed her forehead, still feeling a lingering fear.
Last night, both she and Xia XiaoXi had stayed over at the Xia residence.
The first half of the night had been uneventful. But after Xia XiaoXi had fallen into a deep sleep, Han YunXi began to feel a bit thirsty and decided to get out of bed to fetch some water from the kitchen.
She hadn't even reached the stairs when she spotted a figure wandering through the main hall, seemingly heading toward the staircase.
She didn't recognize the person's face, nor could she tell whether they were a servant of the Xia family.
So she made no sound. Clamping a hand over her mouth, she slowly backed away.
Eventually, she retreated into Xia XiaoXi's room and locked the door behind her.
She didn't wake Xia XiaoXi either—she wasn't sure whether the person outside was one of the "bad guys" HuMing had warned about.
So she held onto a baseball bat and waited for hours.
Only when the sounds outside finally faded to nothing did she cautiously approach the staircase.
By that time, the figure in the hall had vanished.
Relieved, but still wary, she chose to stay with Xia XiaoXi for the rest of the night.
After rubbing her sleepy eyes, Han YunXi returned to her own room to wash up, then headed downstairs.
And in the hall—she spotted someone familiar.
"HuMing!"
HuMing was sitting on the sofa, eyes on his phone. When he heard Han YunXi's voice, he looked up with a smile and stood to greet her.
She rushed over in a few quick steps, anxiously scanning him for injuries.
"Where did you go last night? I heard Xia Chen say you went out to take care of something, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off..."
She lowered her voice and leaned in slightly.
"I think someone broke into the Xia house last night. I was terrified. But when I checked again, they were already gone."
"You did well. It's good to stay alert like that. These are dangerous times—but things will be resolved soon."
HuMing looked at Han YunXi, and suddenly, an image of Zero surfaced in his mind.
Once all of this was over… would Zero be able to reconcile with the Han family?
Would they even accept him?
HuMing didn't know how to resolve that. In the end, it wasn't his decision—it was up to the Han family.
Still, he couldn't help but harbor doubts about Zero.
That man was determined to drag Francis down with him, and HuMing couldn't see him as anything close to benevolent.
Worse still, Zero had gone out of his way to protect Gu ZhaoChuan. It was hard not to suspect he had some deeper plan running behind the scenes.
But Han YunXi, hearing HuMing's reassurance, finally smiled.
She rested her head on his shoulder, her hand gently clasping his.
"I know what you're doing is dangerous. After Han ShuYi died, I realized there had to be something bigger going on behind it all. But Sister QiuXue was right—we can't do much, but at the very least, we won't be a burden. So go and do what you need to do. We'll be fine!"
Her voice was steady and full of conviction.
She understood her limits. All she could do now was make sure HuMing had no worries holding him back.
HuMing turned his hand over to grasp hers more firmly.
His tone relaxed.
"Don't worry. Trust me."
If the opportunity arose, HuMing wouldn't hesitate to put a bullet in Francis's head.
Solve the problem at the source—and all those worries would disappear.
"Good."
Han YunXi looked up at him, cheeks suddenly flushing red.
There was no one else around… maybe now was her chance…
She closed her eyes and leaned in closer to him.
"HuMing!!!"
A shout startled her so badly she took several steps back, face burning.
She looked up at the staircase—Xia XiaoXi was already awake, her face lit with excitement.
In a few quick bounds, she flew down the stairs and leapt onto HuMing, knocking him back onto the sofa.
Han YunXi couldn't help but laugh at the scene.
Xia XiaoXi rubbed her cheeks against HuMing's chest, clearly overjoyed at seeing him again.
[Next time. When HuMing comes back, I'll fulfill that little wish of mine.]
Han YunXi stood quietly nearby, a soft smile on her lips.
…
Ye QiuXue's hand rested on the windowpane.
She gazed silently at the scenery outside, deep in thought.
"You're not going to rest?"
Kang Xin appeared in the doorway at some point, arms crossed over her chest as she looked calmly at Ye QiuXue.
"I can't sleep."
"If you're thinking of ways to help HuMing, I'd advise you to drop the idea. What he's doing is incredibly dangerous. The best way you can help him is by staying alive."
"You don't have to tell me that again, Kang Xin."
Ye QiuXue turned her head, meeting Kang Xin's gaze.
"I know better than anyone what HuMing needs right now."
Her expression was calm, devoid of panic.
Even after the recent assassination attempt, she showed no lingering fear.
No wonder HuMing liked her so much.
"Where do you think HuMing is right now?"
Kang Xin had said he'd left town to track down Shi Zhong.
He had visited Han YunXi and Xia XiaoXi—but hadn't come to see her or Kang Xin.
They were all in the same city. It wouldn't have been hard to stop by.
"He was going to come, but things changed. He had to leave quickly."
She felt the need to speak up for HuMing.
Whatever decisions he made—she would always stand by them.
Ye QiuXue looked back at the moonlight outside. A soft breeze stirred the willows beyond the window, their branches dancing in the wind.
She began to question the kind of world she was living in.
She had never imagined her life would involve such danger.
"Wealthy families, assassins... Kang Xin, how unlucky does someone have to be to go through all of this?"
"If you'd never met HuMing, you probably would've gone on to become a top university student. Found a good job. Married some guy, had kids. Lived the kind of life everyone envies."
She had no doubt Ye QiuXue could've done all that.
It was her genuine belief.
But Ye QiuXue shook her head, a bittersweet smile tugging at her lips.
"No—I was talking about HuMing."
Kang Xin froze.
"From the very beginning, the most unfortunate one… was always HuMing."
"He could've lived a peaceful life. But then he met Han ShuYi. And after returning to the Gu family, he crossed paths with Shi Zhong."
"From beginning to end… all he ever wanted was a quiet, uneventful life."
Ye QiuXue sighed.
