Transmigrated as the Betrothed of the Yandere Villain

Ch. 91

Chapter 91

She just wanted to walk far away, to leave this place; it didn’t matter where she went. This was a strange world; what difference did it make whether it was Fengcheng or somewhere else? To her, it was all the same.

Now that she had calmed down, she couldn’t help but think about this question again.

If she and Xie Shiqing separated, what would she choose to do?

The Zhong family was a top-tier wealthy clan. Even the wages of their servants were astronomically high.

To leave the Zhong family and live the life of an ordinary person would undoubtedly be like falling from the sky and straight into the ground. For the vast majority of people, this would be insanity, madness, an idea only a fool would have.

But Zhong Ning didn’t care about that. She didn’t care whether the imported food came by air freight or from a street stall. She didn’t care whether the thing on her wrist was jade and diamonds or plastic beads. Enjoying luxurious goods wouldn’t make her feel superior, and using cheap things wouldn’t make her feel inferior.

Her spirit was rich enough to cover the gaps in material things. What’s more, she didn’t lack anything; she simply might not be able to use the very best anymore. There were so many things in this world that even the most brilliant scientist could never see them all or know all the knowledge there was.

If someone relied on knowing something others hadn’t seen and then grew complacent and smug about it, that was truly stupid and short-sighted.

Even if she could no longer enjoy the life of a wealthy family in the future, Zhong Ning didn’t feel it was any great loss. Her eyes could still look upon everything she wished to see, and she could experience everything she was interested in. Wasn’t that the happiest thing of all?

If she set everything else aside and simply thought about the Zhong family, Zhong Ning pondered seriously and felt she would very much like to leave here and live in a small western-style house with a big lawn.

However, how could life ever be so simple and easy?

The social identity a person possessed in this world determined all kinds of responsibilities they had to bear.

Zhong Ning had occupied the original body’s identity, so she had to take on the things that person should have shouldered. If she hadn’t known about the resentment between the original body and Zhong Zinuan and Madam Zhong, she really could have just patted herself off and left.

But now that she knew, she felt a bit hesitant.

Although transmigrating was never something she had wanted, one couldn’t just enjoy the benefits of the original body’s identity and then refuse the bad side of it.

How tangled this was.

Back when Xie Shiqing had wanted her to compete for the heir’s position, she had actually felt quite motivated. To fight hard for the person she loved, to protect her, to create a safe environment for her—how fulfilling that was.

Now that this strong motivation might disappear, Zhong Ning felt enormous pain and confusion.

The key was, she wasn’t even sure whether this relationship could continue smoothly anymore. From the look of things now, there were indeed some twists and turns.

She was sincerely thinking about whether the conveniences brought by the original body’s identity were worth risking everything to wade into this muddy water.

After finishing her homework, Zhong Ning still hadn’t figured it out.

How difficult.

She had never realized before how much one had to think about just to stay alive.

How happy her past life had been—opening her eyes only to eat, eating her fill before starting a livestream to play games, gaming until she was hungry again, then eating some more, and afterward going out to have fun or taking a walk, maybe joining a plaza dance. Every day had been so leisurely that it was almost absurd.

Nothing like now.

Zhong Ning sighed heavily. The driver of the taxi she was in laughed.

“Even people living in Qingping Bieyuan have so many troubles?”

She stared with lifeless eyes and said weakly, “Who in this world can live without worries?”

She really hadn’t had any before!

Thinking of this, Zhong Ning grew even more dejected.

The driver clicked his tongue. “That’s true enough.”

Like performing a magic trick, the driver took advantage of the red light to pull out a microphone.

“Want to sing? Connect to my Bluetooth and play your backing track.”

Zhong Ning was stunned. “Such thorough preparation, such a professional mic.”

The driver shook her head proudly.

“Of course! Cost me almost a thousand. Comes with auto-tune. Look, there are buttons down here—each does something different.”

Zhong Ning lowered her head for a look—it really was as she said.

The driver queued up a song that was very popular lately.

“Come on, there’s nothing that a karaoke session can’t fix.”

Her previously gloomy mood was infected by the driver’s upbeat attitude, and she started to feel cheerful.

The driver also had a small microphone clipped to her collar. The two of them finished the song together—a lively little sweet love song. The melody was simple. Zhong Ning had heard it a few times. Though she wasn’t very familiar with it, she managed to sing along.

The good news was, the driver was off-key, too. Such a sweet song ended up sounding like wolf howls when they sang it, but after they finished, both had smiles on their faces.

For the rest of the ride, they sang the entire way.

Zhong Ning even sang her favorite song from her previous life. Since there was no accompaniment, she could only sing it a cappella. While stopped at a red light, none of the drivers in the neighboring cars rolled down their windows to complain about the noise. Instead, they all applauded her.

She turned her head to look, and all she saw were smiling faces.

There was always this feeling that if she left the Zhong family and the Xie family, her life might return to how it had been before.

All sunshine, all positivity.

When she was about to get out, the driver gave her two cookies. They were individually wrapped, round, brown cookies sprinkled with a generous amount of crushed cranberries.

She said her daughter had made them.

Zhong Ning rummaged in her bag and took out two packets of gummy candies. She didn’t know what brand they were. The packaging wasn’t in English, but the taste was very good and very sweet. Zhong Ning especially liked eating them.

She held the gummies out. The driver waved her hands, refusing.

“I only gave you two cookies. They’re not worth that much.”

“Cookies have a price, but happiness doesn’t.”

The driver still wouldn’t accept, so she tossed them into the back seat through the window, finally succeeding.

This was the kind of give-and-take in human interaction that never made one feel annoyed.

At that moment, the sun hadn’t completely set, but the moon had already climbed quietly into the sky. Zhong Ning took a deep breath and looked up. The layered clouds resembled a jellyfish drifting slowly across the sky. The deep blue sky was its ocean, and it was the freest fish in the sea.

All of a sudden, she felt at peace.
