Chapter 48: 48
"Are you sure this will work?"
As the second round of the points-based competition neared its end, Shi Yue and Zhou Leya had both successfully completed their work. The two stood in front of Shi Yue's workstation, with Zhou Leya eyeing Shi Yue's submission with a trace of doubt.
Shi Yue turned to her and asked, "Do you think there's a problem?"
"Hm…" Zhou Leya carefully examined the outfit displayed on the mannequin. "To be honest, I personally love this design.
"I even think your score from the professional judges might be higher than mine."
Shi Yue couldn't help but smile.
Being praised felt wonderful—especially when it came from a rival of equal skill.
"But…" Zhou Leya furrowed her brows and looked at her. "What about Shu Qingxi's points? Are you just giving up on them?"
Shi Yue straightened up. "What do you mean?"
"I made a huge mistake in the fourth elimination round for going off-topic, and I nearly got eliminated. Don't you remember that lesson?" Zhou Leya shook her head worriedly. "Didn't you read the brief? Do you think Shu Qingxi will like this outfit?"
Shi Yue rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "Whether she likes it or not, I can't say. But I designed it based on her painting."
She remained optimistic and winked at Zhou Leya. "Our assignment was to base our designs on the painting—not on Shu Qingxi herself."
Zhou Leya opened her mouth, ready to argue further, but a staff member arrived to collect the submissions and remind them to head backstage for touch-ups before the judging session in an hour.
Zhou Leya sighed, giving up on the conversation, and gave Shi Yue a supportive pat on the shoulder.
Soon, the contestants gathered at the recording venue.
Models wearing the outfits designed by the three competitors took the stage one by one, showcasing the creations. Each outfit was unique and well-crafted, earning rounds of applause from the audience.
During the professional judging phase, it was clear the panel paid more attention to Shi Yue's work. One judge who particularly favored her style even joked, "I love this so much. Can I have this outfit after the competition?"
Shi Yue, though unwilling to part with it, offered a better reply. "If you'd like, I can design a similar one for you after the competition."
The judge clapped enthusiastically. "Wonderful!"
Finally, the professional judging segment concluded, and all cameras turned to Shu Qingxi.
Today, Shu Qingxi wore light makeup, her complexion pale. It was unclear whether she was genuinely unwell or intentionally trying to project a delicate, 'tragic beauty' image.
Leaning toward the microphone, she said softly, "I'd like to hear the inspiration and design concepts from the three contestants."
Shen Lingling immediately stepped forward, eager to speak. "My black winter cheongsam was designed based on your painting and your personal aura. Black is the color of your beloved cat, and its understated elegance suits you perfectly. For the details, I used faux fur as accents—not only to balance the heaviness of black but also to add a sense of warmth and connection when you interact with your cat while wearing this outfit."
Shu Qingxi nodded approvingly. "Thank you. That's very thoughtful."
Zhou Leya went next. "I didn't think that much about it. I simply translated the painting's content into a garment."
Shu Qingxi gave her a polite response. "That works too."
Finally, she turned to Shi Yue, who had yet to speak. "And you, Miss Shi Yue?"
Shi Yue took a deep breath, then stepped forward. "My design was inspired entirely by your painting."
"Oh?" Shu Qingxi twirled the pen in her hand, glancing sideways at Shi Yue's outfit. "A pants-skirt design… it's quite novel. Honestly, the entire outfit embodies a crisp, neutral, and stylish look that I've never tried before." She raised a brow and asked, "Are you sure this outfit suits me?"
"I'm sorry, Miss Shu," Shi Yue said, raising a hand. "In fact, this outfit wasn't designed for you."
The room erupted in murmurs.
"Huh?"
"What does she mean?"
"Isn't this off-topic?"
"…"
Shu Qingxi's expression remained unreadable. "Then who is it for?"
Shi Yue replied confidently, "I designed this outfit for the woman in your painting."
The moment the words fell, the noise in the room abruptly ceased.
Even Shu Qingxi widened her eyes slightly. "For the woman in the painting…"
"Yes." Shi Yue gestured toward the painting displayed on the screen. "Based on the details depicted in your artwork, I boldly inferred that the woman playing with the black cat is a calm and rational individual. Her simple dress suggests that she doesn't favor overly ornate or extravagant styles."
"Using her as my muse, I created this outfit."
"This is my entire design inspiration—derived solely from your work."
Her explanation was met with a wave of admiration from the crowd.
Zhou Leya was the first to applaud, and the next moment, the entire venue erupted into thunderous applause.
Shi Yue bowed graciously in thanks and then humbly stepped back to her place.
"That was amazing!" Zhou Leya said sincerely, genuinely happy for her.
Shi Yue smiled. "Thank you."
After five minutes of deliberation, the judges announced their final scores.
The host, holding the result card, stood at the center of the stage and loudly declared, "This score is well-deserved! Let's congratulate contestant Shi Yue for earning first place in this round of the points competition with a high score of 92 points!
"Congratulations also to contestant Zhou Leya, who came in second with 87 points, and contestant Shen Lingling, who placed third with 85 points."
Amid the cheers, the three contestants received their awards and left the stage in order.
Shi Yue and Zhou Leya began discussing the scores, but as Shen Lingling walked past them, she made no effort to hide her bitterness, glaring at Shi Yue with open hostility.
"Lucky break," Shen Lingling sneered, leaving behind a provocative remark.
Zhou Leya rolled her eyes dramatically. "What's her problem?"
Shi Yue tugged on her arm, shaking her head. "Don't bother with her."
Zhou Leya nodded. "Including the bonus medals, you're now at 175 points, and I'm at 172." Her tone became spirited. "The gap is small. The next round is the final competition—you'd better watch out."
"If I can outscore you by just three points, the championship is mine!"
Shi Yue laughed.
She thought for a moment. "Don't forget about Shen Lingling. If I'm not mistaken, she's at 169 points now.
"There's not much of a gap between her and us either."
Zhou Leya waved dismissively.
"I've never been impressed with her designs," she said. "They're solid but lack brilliance. She won't be a threat."
Shi Yue cautioned, "Don't get complacent."
Zhou Leya waved her off. "Got it."
Then she glanced at the time. "Oh, I need to go." She broke into a jog toward the dressing room.
"What's the rush?" Shi Yue called after her. "Got plans?"
"Yeah," Zhou Leya replied, lifting her chin with pride. "Wu is picking me up."
Shi Yue stroked her chin in thought. "It seems like things are progressing faster than I expected."
Zhou Leya shot her a sly look but said nothing, speeding up her pace.
The two eventually left the venue together, each getting into their own cars.
Once Shi Yue fastened her seatbelt in the passenger seat, Leng Yanmi immediately made a U-turn.
"This isn't the way home, is it?" Shi Yue asked, puzzled. "Where are we going?"
"To pick up a file near the airport," Leng Yanmi replied.
"Hmm?" Shi Yue was surprised. "A delivery? Why not have it sent to your place?"
Leng Yanmi cleared her throat. "It could've been delivered, but I was in a hurry, so I decided to pick it up myself."
Shi Yue understood.
Having the delivery brought to their home would've taken longer. Picking it up directly from the distribution center was faster. But she couldn't help wondering why Leng Yanmi, instead of sending an assistant, felt the need to go herself. Was it something critical for the Leng Corporation?
Though curious, Shi Yue quickly set the matter aside.
"You tired? Get some rest," Leng Yanmi said gently. "I'll wake you when we're home."
Having just finished a competition, Shi Yue was indeed drained. She nodded. "Alright."
But things didn't go as planned. At the delivery center, Shi Yue was awakened by the surrounding noise. When she opened her eyes, she saw Leng Yanmi re-entering the car with a brown paper envelope, carefully placing it on the back seat and securing it.
"You got it?" Shi Yue asked groggily.
Leng Yanmi gripped the steering wheel tightly. After a brief pause, she replied, "Yes."
The next moment, she took a deep breath, started the car, and drove off.
Shi Yue dozed off again and woke up later in Leng Yanmi's familiar apartment bedroom. It was already dark outside, and a thin blanket was draped over her stomach.
On the floor, a chubby cat meowed up at her. Shi Yue reached down to stroke its back.
"Where's your owner?"
It let out a soft meow before trotting toward the bedroom door, glancing back at her as if beckoning her to follow.
"Strange little thing," Shi Yue muttered, getting up to trail after it.
She thought the cat was just playing, but to her surprise, the cat led her all the way to the study. The door was slightly ajar, and it slipped inside without a sound.
Curious, Shi Yue leaned closer and peeked through the gap.
Inside, Leng Yanmi sat at her luxurious desk. Normally, this wouldn't have been unusual—she often worked there when at home.
What was odd, however, was that Leng Yanmi wasn't doing anything. She was simply staring at the unopened brown envelope in her hands, lost in thought.
Shi Yue waited for a moment before pushing the door open slightly and poking her head inside.
"Auntie?" she called.
Leng Yanmi snapped out of her trance, looking up to meet Shi Yue's gaze.
Her reaction was rare—there was a hint of panic in her expression as she hurriedly stood up and shoved the envelope into a pile of documents on the desk. "Ah, you're awake?"
"Yes…" Shi Yue replied, amused by her flustered actions. "I'm awake."
Leng Yanmi walked out from behind the desk and stood in front of her. "Are you hungry?"
She guided Shi Yue toward the living room as she spoke.
It was only when they passed the clock in the living room that Shi Yue realized it was already 7:30 PM.
Given Leng Yanmi's usual attentiveness, Shi Yue was sure she'd have already prepared dinner and left it warming in the kitchen. Smiling, she asked, "What did you get?"
Leng Yanmi paused, then admitted, "Nothing."
"Huh?" Shi Yue was genuinely surprised.
Leng Yanmi turned back to look at her. "So, what do you feel like eating? I'll order something."
Shi Yue nodded, still dazed.
Right now, her curiosity about the contents of the envelope was stronger than ever. Whatever it was, it had clearly stolen her aunt's focus entirely.
