Timebreaker: The Edge of time and magic

Chapter 5: Max died

The Organization Base. The Cloud Kingdom.

Within the last floor of the central towering scaraper, hundreds of analysts sat, all intensely computing various degrees of intricate data of the ongoing assessment.

Towards the edge of the room, on the far end of it was a wide stretched screen displaying a map of the assessment ground with various keys, legends and pointers scattered all over it.

An authorative figure sauntered in from the opposite side of the rectangular room and catwalked briskly towards the front.

Her stringent demeanour, left a few uneased as she walked past each desk.

"What's going on here? Give me a cap on the results, now," she said imperatively while banging her hand over a senior administrator's work desk.

"Miss Lin...", he stammered. "Emm... Batch AS 25-9z," he stated formally. "The survival rate took a tragic drop," he unnoticeably paused to observe her expression change before speedily rushing into the rest of his statement. "..but despite that the cumulative power level for each individual is exceptional not to mention that 4 out of the 40 who survived awoke 3 new concepts," he quickly summarized, unwilling to challenge her reaction.

Her expression remained still so he went on.

"Also there's this..."

"Did she make it?", she rudely cut into his sentence.

"You mean Liv. Yes, your sister survived."

"Pull up her stats," she instructed with no expression of relief or somewhat concern for the life of her sister.

The administrator turned to his computer and displayed the rank table in the room screen.

Even though Miss Lin was well known for her stern and austere frame, perhaps he must have hoped to see some sort of positive response or at least any kind of emotional reaction to her only sister's survival.

"She's ranked 6th with magical and technological concepts."

"6th," she repeated with greater bitterness and disdain. "A descendant of the Pheonix bloodline is expected to stand on top and not ranked bottom with other low lives."

"Who's first," she asked with unholy curiosity.

"Yes, as I was trying to say before, first is some guy named Max Fenton. His power level is exceedingly above average, abnormal if I'm been frank plus he's one of those who awoke three concepts but there is a problem. We can't seem to trace any of them."

"Why is that? Is there a malfunction in the comm devices?"

"Ma'am I assure you that there is no malfunction. The comms are working perfectly fine," he said as he swiped the screen back to the map interface.

"See. There he is. The green tag," he pointed. "But don't worry we will bring him back and run some test. All will be fine," he assured.

"Keep an eye on him. We can't afford to lose him. Such prodigies are rare and can't just go to waste."

Just then a notification window chimed in and turned the eyes of the two towards the screen.

The green light flickered.

After a while it completely vanished.

_Max Fenton has died.

Before he even had the chance to blink in awe, a sonic slap swept through the distance and landed hard on the senior administrator's face.

Eyes turned in shock at the extent to which their boss disposition could stretch but still, considering themselves by avoiding noticable eye contact with her.

Even the senior administrator face obviously stated surprise, even after formerly affirming her underestimated delinquence.

"I can't comprehend the extent of your incompetence. Three! We just lost three concepts. All due to your disability to effeciently execute orders," she scolded. "Listen, I don't know how you'll do it but you better fix this, right now or else," she threatened with an undoable and unbalanced ultimatum and strolled off out of the room.

Naturally, even though he didn't show it, little enraged particles floated in the air just above him. Anger and shock bolstered within at the moment.

'How could she...?', he questioned within.

But lucky for her, in the long run, he had an undeniable respect for authority and hence was in no way attempting a revolt or uprise.

He dutifully turned to this laptop, took his hands off his cheek and began computing.

He pulled out an image and dispalyed the last recording their cameras could get of Max's death on his laptop.

The video showed a beast, framed in human figure.

"What in the?"

Then following was a a rapid successive launch of numerous crystal like attacks which plunged into the young boy, so fast that it didn't even give him a chance to react.

The attacks stabbed deep and infected his entire body with dim blue light as he diminished and crumbled into nothing.

The senior administrator, Mr Kyle had seen Max fight the jaguar and immediately compared with the majority of the beast.

He was well above them and so it didn't sit right with him how easily he was killed off.

Again he replayed the video and noticed an off feature about it.

He couldn't trace the beast's control caller on his laptop and that only meant one thing. That...

He briskly dashed over his keyboard and assured his thoughts.

"No, there is no way. But how?"

His mind stipulated.

"They are here." Without wasting any more time he instantly deployed. "All units, I need you on the battle field. We have a BG-5-90. Go. Take out any thing out there without a comm or a caller. Now. Go! Go! Go!"

If they were truly out there it meant trouble for all.

They easily managed to take out the strongest of the group, so his mind could only envisage the speed with which they could kill the rest of the prodigies.

---

Meanwhile, Max now in 'a better place' floated, mystifeid by the atmosphere around him.

No air, yet he still breaths.

No light yet he still see's.

No ground and yet...

The entire thing seemed all too uncanny.

'Did I die?', he wondered to himself. 'What was that?'

His answer was immediately answered by the trembling presence of his assassinator.

The first word that crossed his mind on sight alone came as natural as expected to.

With the sombre cloak, skinny frame and fleshless and dark face gave room for no other thought but that one.

'The Grim reaper.'

All that was missing was just a towering steel sickle to crown it all.

He wondered what the reaper had to do with him. 'Did I do anything wrong?'

Just when he was about to audible ask a question, he realized that there was no sound.

He couldn't speak or even move his mouth rightly.

He turned to the figure expecting the void to be somekind of thought transmitter but that wasn't the case either.

After trying, he felt a cold touch in his forehead.

The touch of death sat just over him.

The blaze in its claok grew brighter posing as eye-like figures.

Max felt something leaving him or maybe something heavy being pushed into his body weighing him down.

Max was fading and was loosing consciousness.

He looked towards the Grim reaper unwilling to beg but all he heard as he travelled into deeper darkness was the baritone voice speaking words that captured greater enigma:

"I'll see you soon."
