Chapter 6 : Threads of Destiny
The Shadow Hounds
During one of their supply runs near the outskirts of the forest, Kiro and Kevin were ambushed by a pack of Shadow Hounds, eerie creatures with glowing eyes. Kiro activated Aerofuse to fight them, his reflexes heightened as he dodged their swift attacks. With Kevin’s support, they managed to kill the last of the hounds. But just like with the previous monster, a strange light began to pulse from the hound’s corpse. This time, the glowing substance spread even faster.
“What the hell is going on?” Kiro asked, stepping back. Kevin quickly pulled him away, his face grim. “We need to move. I don’t know what this stuff is, but it’s spreading.”
Kiro couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to these creatures than he understood. Something about the glowing substance felt... alive.
Daily Life and Hints of Mystery
Life in the Whispering Woods wasn’t just about fighting monsters. Every day, Kiro and Kevin would explore the forest, hunting for food, collecting materials, and avoiding the more dangerous creatures. The shadow hounds were the worst. Their glowing eyes would pierce the darkness, and their pack always seemed to be watching from a distance.
“Never let your guard down,” Kevin had said. “You might not see them, but they’re always there.”
Despite the danger, Kiro was starting to adapt to this new life. The physical strain of training was hard, but the feeling of growing stronger gave him hope. Yet, there were still so many questions unanswered. Every now and then, Kevin would mention something about the "old world" or "what came before," but Kiro never pressed too hard. He had a feeling that the truth was darker than he could imagine.
One night, after a particularly long day, Kiro sat by the campfire, watching the flames flicker. He glanced at Kevin, who was polishing his gun—a weapon that looked far too advanced for this world.
“Where did you get that?” Kiro asked.
Kevin glanced up but didn’t answer right away. “Found it a long time ago. Don’t ask too many questions, Kiro. Some things are better left unknown.”
Kiro didn’t push further, but a part of him knew there was more to this world than Kevin was letting on. The strange jelly-like substance after the monsters died, the advanced technology, and the eerie silence of the forest—it all felt connected. But until he could piece it together, he would have to focus on surviving.
Six Months Later: Kiro’s First Solo Mission
After half a year of intense training, Kiro had grown far stronger. He had mastered the basics of Aerofuse, but there was still much to learn. Kevin had become something of a mentor, though he remained distant, keeping much of his past and the truth about this world to himself.
Now, Kiro was ready for his first solo mission. Kevin had tasked him with venturing deeper into the forest, beyond the areas they had explored, to retrieve an artifact from the ruins of an old town. Aero, his loyal companion, would accompany him, but this time, Kiro was on his own.
“I hope you’re ready,” Kevin said as Kiro strapped his sword to his back.
Kiro nodded, glancing at Aero. “Let’s do this.”
As he ventured deeper into the Whispering Woods, Kiro’s mind was filled with questions. What was the true nature of Aerofuse? What was the glowing substance that seemed to emerge from the monsters they killed? And what role did he have to play in this world’s survival?
The answers, he knew, lay somewhere in the heart of the Whispering Woods.
