Chapter 60: CHAPTER 60
Spiritual Beast
The scarlet glow of Fugaku's fully-activated Sharingan scanned the depths of the forest with quiet precision. Tiny traces of chakra shimmered in his vision—small forest creatures like mantises clinging behind tree trunks and snakes slithering silently through the underbrush.
In the shinobi world, certain animals naturally possess chakra in their bodies—far more agile and dangerous than normal wildlife. The Forest of Death, an infamous training and combat zone within Konoha's control, had long become a habitat for such beasts—some mutated, others merely awakened by residual chakra from past battles.
Fugaku leapt soundlessly between branches. His eyes detected glowing blue specks of chakra scattered around the forest, but most were negligible—insufficient to support any form of chakra-based enhancement or mutation. However, in these woods, rare anomalies did exist.
With a sudden shunshin, Fugaku reappeared in a crouch, holding a small pangolin about half a meter long. Its body quivered as it curled tightly into a ball—its beady eyes filled with primal fear. Despite its size, it radiated a faint but distinct chakra signature.
Pangolins, while not commonly used as summoning creatures, possessed dense overlapping scales—an effective natural defense against predators. This one, like many beasts exposed to residual chakra environments, had begun to develop unusual traits.
Fugaku placed the pangolin back on the ground. Its snout twitched, sensing the familiar scent of soil. Slowly, cautiously, it uncurled and stretched its limbs before digging into the earth and vanishing into a shallow burrow.
With another flicker of movement, Fugaku vanished again. His Sharingan rotated slowly, scanning the area with heightened clarity. From the tall grass ahead, another chakra signature emerged—larger and far more distinct.
A second pangolin appeared, slightly larger than the first, its dark hide gleaming faintly. Unlike the other, this one's chakra flow was steady, almost disciplined. It had mutated more deeply.
Fugaku landed nearby, and the creature immediately curled up and attempted to flee by rolling. But he intercepted it gently, lifting it to examine its structure.
Compared to the first, this pangolin's chakra was three to four times denser. He pried open its small jaws to find a pair of emerging canines—a trait not typical of pangolins. It had begun the slow transformation into a chakra beast.
Such mutations weren't unheard of. With enough chakra intake, animals could evolve rapidly. Though not on the scale of the legendary Myōboku toads, a few weeks of concentrated chakra feeding could drastically enhance their size and intelligence.
But forging a summoning contract with a single animal was delicate. Unlike clan-based summoning scrolls—like those of the toads, snakes, or slugs—personal summons required the beast's consent and the binding of chakra signatures.
The three-tomoe Sharingan spun faster. Fugaku cast a low-level genjutsu, slipping into the creature's primitive consciousness. With a subtle nudge, he altered the pangolin's perception, making it believe Fugaku had been its long-time caretaker—feeding it insects and protecting it from predators.
The creature's body relaxed, and it gently licked Fugaku's hand with a long, thin tongue.
Seizing the moment, Fugaku sliced his thumb with a kunai coated in black chakra ink and began inscribing a summoning formula onto the pangolin's scales—a condensed contract sigil for an individual summoning pact.
Unlike traditional tribe-based scrolls stored in sacred sites, solo contracts were unique, bound by both chakra imprint and emotional acceptance.
Once the seal was complete, he ran through the standard summoning hand seals: Boar → Dog → Bird → Monkey → Ram. With a final slam of his palm onto the pangolin's back, the contract seal was absorbed into its flesh in a faint glow before vanishing completely.
Fugaku felt the moment the link formed—a low, humming chakra thread now tethered them together.
"Stand up. Turn around," he instructed calmly.
The pangolin obeyed without hesitation, circling him once with a curious expression in its black eyes, before sniffing the air as if expecting a reward.
Fugaku gave a slight nod, satisfied. It would obey. For now.
He removed a standard-issue Konoha forehead protector from his pouch and tied it diagonally across the pangolin's forelimbs. While largely symbolic, the band would mark it as a Konoha-aligned summoning creature—deterring anyone from mistakenly attacking it.
Eventually, Fugaku would begin feeding it chakra-enriched insects to accelerate its mutation and growth, possibly even allowing it to serve in combat or reconnaissance.
For now, the backwoods of Konoha would serve as its training grounds. There were no predators strong enough to threaten it.

Mission Briefing – Next Morning
At exactly eight the next morning, Fugaku arrived at the mission collection center. His three genin had already assembled, standing in formation.
"Good morning, Fugaku-sensei!" the three said in unison.
Fugaku nodded. "I hope you're ready. This next mission is real-world combat—actual blood and steel."
"We're ready," replied Shikazawa, stepping forward.
Uchiha Feng and Kamizuki Zhi nodded in unison. Their eyes carried the sharpness of fresh resolve.
Fugaku evaluated them quietly. We'll see how they handle the field. If they fail in actual combat, they'll be nothing but fodder when war hits the borders.
The number of available missions had decreased, and many chunin and jonin were already deployed to the Ame border. The chaos brewing in the Land of Rain had stretched Konoha's resources thin—and opportunistic bandits were beginning to exploit the situation.
Fugaku reviewed the mission board. One entry stood out:
> Mission: Suppression of bandits
Location: Mount Luming, 100 li west of Konoha
Details: Bandits have fortified an area along a key trade route. They target small caravans and lone travelers. Low risk; estimated to be genin-to-chunin level threats.
He took the request and officially registered the mission. Normally, fresh genin squads wouldn't be assigned bandit suppression work—but with a jonin team leader and the ongoing conflict, protocol had become more flexible.
As he handed the scroll to the team, he explained: "The enemy isn't strong—most likely ex-mercenaries or missing-nin without affiliation. Don't underestimate them, but don't expect anything elite either."
Lu Ze raised a hand. "Sensei, are bandits really getting worse in the Land of Fire?"
Fugaku's expression darkened slightly. "Yes. While Konoha is focusing its attention on the Rain Country conflict, the interior is weakening. Lawlessness festers when the eyes of the village are turned outward."
He tucked the scroll away and turned toward the gate. "Let's go. Time to see what you're made of."

Notes & Canon Improvements
Summoning Contract Lore: I used canonical hand seals and chakra-based forging methods seen in the series (e.g., Naruto's contract with the toads).
Animal Mutation: I leaned on the chakra-beast mutation logic shown in places like the Forest of Death and filler episodes such as the "Beast Summoning" mini-arcs.
Fugaku's Abilities: Fugaku's use of Sharingan for genjutsu-based subjugation aligns with his canon portrayal as an elite Uchiha with strong ocular power.
Setting and Mission Context: The timeline and mission distribution reflect the political tension leading into the Third Shinobi War and the conditions inside the Land of Fire.
