Chapter 139: Go to the People, Chess Competition
"The power of the people is stronger than my tyrannosaurus?"
"That's impossible!"
"Hiss, why are the people so terrifying?!"
The few people holding wooden lunch boxes looked at Watson in shock.
Watson took a couple of bites of basil stir-fried wild boar meat and lucky flower stir-fried domestic pig meat with his chopsticks, then smiled and said, "Because the people are every single person on this land. Think about it, on this land, Andrew was born, the Insomnia Emperor was born…"
"They were born among us 'people'. You have to know, the Insomnia Emperor wouldn't build houses or carry manure, but someone has to do these things... So, as Young Master Lin Ke said, most people in our world are like leaves, but without us leaves, those beautiful flowers and rich fruits wouldn't be possible!"
After Watson finished speaking, he took a few more bites with his chopsticks, then looked at the chopsticks and praised, "Just like the chopsticks invented by Young Master Lin Ke, I find them much more flexible than knives and forks! But even someone as great as Young Master Lin Ke needs us 'people,' so surely we are useful too!"
The burly men nodded in half-understanding.
"You three fools, it's your turn! Hurry up, are you Mushroom People or something, moving so slowly? There are still many people behind you!"
The woman serving the food shouted impatiently at the group, prompting them to quickly move forward to get their meals.
Watson smiled as he watched them, finished the last few bites of his food, then soaked some barley bread, chewed it, and swallowed.
Next came casual chats with people coming and going, discussing things like "how terrifying Magical Beasts are," "how brave Young Master Lin Ke is against them," and "praising Azanen."
"...So, you see, we workers are quite impressive!" After chatting with a worker, Watson suddenly spotted a very familiar figure, widened his eyes, and blurted out, "Young Master Lin Ke!"
"Huh?!"
"Young Master Lin Ke!"
"Young Master Lin Ke, why are you here?!"
"Oh my, my daughter forgot to bring him over."
"Andrew's Leg!"
After Watson called out, everyone, whether they had met Lin Ke or not, greeted the distinguished-looking young man.
It was Lin Ke.
"Hello everyone, hello, keep eating, I'll join you for a bite soon."
Lin Ke smiled and waved, then stood behind the people lined up for food.
The atmosphere suddenly cooled down.
"What is the young master doing?"
"I don't know, did Old Wright offend Young Master Lin Ke?"
"I think so, look at how Young Master Lin Ke is standing still, waiting for Old Wright."
The people around were whispering about Lin Ke.
In front of Lin Ke, the forty-something middle-aged old farmer started sweating heavily.
"Lin...Young Master Lin Ke, I... I, I..."
Old Wright, who stuttered, turned around timidly and looked at Lin Ke in terror.
"It's fine, you get your meal first, only two more before it's your turn." Lin Ke smiled.
Old Wright didn't dare say anything, queuing up while sweating profusely, and by the time he got his meal, his face had paled a bit; the dirt on his face was washed clean by the cold sweat.
The food-serving aunt didn't look at him, hurriedly gave him three dishes and a soup, and then waved him aside so as not to block her view of the young master.
"Oh, isn't that Young Master Lin Ke? Haven't seen you in days, you've become even more wise and heroic! Do you still remember me? Yes, yes, I'm Aunt Laura, John, that little guy, apparently hasn't stopped talking about his foster mother's brother's sister-in-law..."
The food-serving aunt immediately beamed upon seeing Lin Ke, like a big chrysanthemum.
Lin Ke smiled and handed over his lunchbox, and Aunt Laura's smile became even more vibrant, like a dragon fruit flower.
She gave him more than twice the portion of others, and threw in two pieces of barley bread for good measure. Lin Ke glanced around and squatted down next to a simple, honest-looking blond youth.
"Watson, do you guys usually stand while eating?"
Lin Ke used communal chopsticks, but unlike the others who were not familiar with chopsticks, he picked up the food one piece at a time and ate.
While eating, he gestured to Watson, "Come on, squat down. Standing is tiring."
"Yes, Young Master Lin Ke." Watson, having finished his food, squatted down quickly, his face simple and honest: "But the old carpenter is already making those tables and chairs, they'll be moved to the dining hall later, and Butler Billy even paid two silver coins."
Lin Ke nodded, glanced at Watson a few times.
Ordinary people won't give such detailed information nor proactively provide such useful information, for example, Lin Ke hadn't mentioned how long it would take to make the tables and chairs, nor asked about the price.
But Watson answered nonetheless.
Lin Ke had noticed this young man's character during the first interview—simple, honest, with a bit of wit.
So, many times, he didn't mind nurturing Watson, just like Bald Jack.
The Eldest Prince has over a dozen gods and legends behind him, and figures like the Insomnia Emperor have even more powerful followers.
One person cannot persist alone.
This world isn't a novel's world; it's not about one person punching their way from the underground to the heavens.
Is a strong-minded person the one who thinks of "Another bottle"?
Are delicacies like "beggar's chicken" and "Dongpo pork" created by a person who punches their way through heaven and earth?
If everyone goes off fighting heaven and earth, who will plant vegetables, who will carry manure? Who will sweep the streets, who will make the two-yuan ice cream cones at Honey Snow Ice City?
So, while Lin Ke sees enhancing strength as a priority, he doesn't see it as the only thing.
A leader, though not from the masses, must go among the masses.
Thus, Lin Ke was very optimistic about Watson's cleverness, and the idea that he might become an asset in the future, so he said, "Don't you think everyone is very happy together? Very harmonious?"
Watson scratched his head and innocently replied, "Yes, Young Master Lin Ke, our wages are very generous, and there's very cheap food at noon. Everyone is very grateful."
Lin Ke nodded, adding food while guiding him: "What do you think is missing for everyone right now? What could be added?"
Watson had already calmed down and was no longer nervous. He squatted next to Lin Ke, frowning and thinking: "Everyone is very happy now, thanks to the young master's kindness…"
He didn't forget to praise Lin Ke before continuing, "But... I always feel like everyone is kind of, um, too idle?"
Even Watson himself felt something was off as he spoke.
Many villagers work during the day and still have to return home to plow two acres of land by night.
But he just felt that the workers should have time for other things.
"Idle? Do you mean bored?" Lin Ke chuckled, finishing the last two bites of his dish, drinking half a bowl of soup, and then continued, "What do you think should be done?"
Upon hearing this, Watson pondered again, then shook his head: "I don't know."
Lin Ke stood up, and Watson also stood up.
Lin Ke gestured to the workers who were resting and stealing glances over, saying, "Look, everyone actually has plenty of time, especially in the evening, the Wonderful Place is basically empty, why not make use of it."
Lin Ke turned to look at Watson, who had also stood up: "For example... I heard quite a few people play chess? Why not organize a chess tournament tomorrow? Have everyone play chess, match-up against each other, and for the top three winners, give them some rewards, like front-row seats tickets, or maybe a pig's knuckle."
"Oh, by the way, the Wonderful Place will start charging fees in the future, but Aranen's identity cardholders can get a discount." With that, Lin Ke patted Watson on the arm:
"Remember to notify everyone, and... work hard. In the future, I'll give you an opportunity for enlightenment."
