Chapter 71: 71. Testing Poison on Herself
By the time Tsunade arrived at the front lines, nearly half of the Konoha border troops had been poisoned.
A quarter of them had already lost their combat ability due to the poisoning, while the rest had been severely weakened.
If Tsunade had not arrived in time, these ninja might have retreated on their own.
No one could continue fighting under such hopeless circumstances!
Thus, Tsunade's arrival was like a powerful morale booster, giving them renewed hope for victory—at the very least, hope for an antidote.
After all, she was one of the legendary Sannin, the esteemed disciple of the Hokage, and the strongest medical ninja in the entire shinobi world!
However, unlike the troops' excitement, Tsunade's expression remained grim.
She knew her own condition well—fighting was out of the question. At most, she could focus on developing an antidote.
She could only hope that old Chiyo would be wary of her presence.
And that the old geezer Danzo would hurry back!
Suppressing these irritating thoughts, Tsunade rushed straight to the hospital the moment she arrived at the camp.
Shizune, who had traveled with her, had originally intended to give her a gas mask, but Tsunade refused.
"Don't worry, a little poison like this won't affect me."
With that, Tsunade strode confidently into the medical tent.
After a careful examination and study of the patients, her brows furrowed deeply.
Perhaps to enhance its concealment, this poison wasn't fatal, but it rendered its victims unable to fight for a period of time.
It was significantly different from Hanzo's salamander poison.
"Did they modify Hanzo's poison further? That old hag is really troublesome," Tsunade muttered, rubbing her temples.
As expected, anyone who had survived since the First Great Ninja War wasn't simple!
Danzo, Hanzo, Chiyo—they were all like this.
After completing her examination, Tsunade immediately began treating the poisoned ninja.
For her, the greatest medical ninja in the world, treating this poison wasn't particularly difficult.
As long as she understood how the poison affected the body and where it was located, she could extract it using the Delicate Illness Extraction Technique and then heal the affected areas with Mystical Palm Technique.
In about half an hour, she successfully cured the first patient.
The morale in the hospital rose significantly.
Even Shizune, standing by Tsunade's side, cheered softly.
Yet, Tsunade's expression remained unchanged.
Curing one patient was easy. But what about ten? A hundred? Even a thousand?
Would Sunagakure just sit back and watch while they healed all their wounded?
Impossible!
As for the other medical ninja, only a handful could perform this procedure—it was far too slow!
There was only one way to mass-produce an antidote: to develop a cure.
"Rest well," Tsunade told the patient, then carefully sealed the extracted poison in a glass vial before turning to leave.
"Shizune, come with me. We're making an antidote."
Her firm words reignited hope among the wounded.
Shizune, also a medical ninja, quickly understood and hurried to follow.
___
Tsunade entered the laboratory and took out a large number of medicinal herbs from the supplies. However, she did not immediately begin working; instead, she stood still, deep in thought.
At that moment, a knock came at the door.
"Come in."
Turning around, Tsunade saw a white-haired ninja wearing a mask step inside.
"Do you need something, Kakashi?"
Tsunade's attitude towards Kakashi was relatively good.
After all, he and Shisui were currently the two strongest forces under her command.
Kakashi's voice remained calm and cold.
"Lady Tsunade, may I ask how long it will take to develop the antidote?"
Tsunade frowned. "What happened?"
Kakashi replied, "According to the reconnaissance unit's report, the Sunagakure forces might be making a big move."
"Damn it..."
Tsunade cursed harshly. If there had been a table in front of her, she probably would have smashed it.
"I understand. I'll do my best."
She paused for a moment, then seemed to make a firm decision.
"One day. Give me one day, and I'll have the antidote ready!"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. Although he had no idea how Tsunade planned to accomplish such a feat, it was undoubtedly good news.
"Understood."
With that, he swiftly disappeared from sight.
Once Kakashi left, Shizune immediately spoke up anxiously.
"Lady Tsunade, you're not planning to use that method to develop the antidote, are you?"
Tsunade smiled confidently.
"If I don't test the poison on myself, how else can I develop the antidote in the shortest time possible?"
Shizune still looked uneasy and hesitated before saying, "That's too risky. If something goes wrong..."
Tsunade's self-assured voice cut off her concerns.
"I'm the greatest medical ninja in the shinobi world. A little poison like this—how could I possibly fail?"
Then, her voice lowered slightly.
"Shizune, you know as well as I do... that in my current state, even if I don't experiment on myself, I won't be of any use on the battlefield."
Shizune fell silent.
As one of the few people who knew about Tsunade's hemophobia, she couldn't argue with that.
"Don't worry, I'll be fine."
Tsunade ruffled Shizune's hair before striding decisively toward the experiment table.
She would use herself as a test subject—poisoning herself to better understand how the toxin affected the human body.
Only then could she develop the corresponding antidote and make all their ninja immune to the poison!

Sunagakure Camp
At the Sunagakure camp, Advisor Elder Chiyo and the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, received some bad news.
"Danzo has led his forces to defeat Kirigakure?"
Holding the intelligence report in his hands, Rasa's face showed anger.
"Are the Kirigakure shinobi a bunch of useless drunks? How did they lose to Danzo so quickly?"
Unlike Rasa's frustration, Chiyo simply narrowed her eyes.
"As expected of that old fox, Danzo..."
"Lord Kazekage, it looks like we need to accelerate our plans. If we wait until Danzo returns with reinforcements, Sunagakure will have no choice but to retreat."
A glint of ruthless determination flashed in her aged eyes.
"As long as we can capture that 'Princess of Konoha,' we'll still have bargaining power with Konoha."
As one of Sunagakure's most seasoned warriors, Chiyo saw their disadvantage clearly.
A barren homeland. Too few ninja.
Sunagakure could not afford a prolonged war. Their only option was to seize enough benefits quickly, then force their enemies into negotiations to exchange resources.
If they truly fought Konoha to the bitter end, Sunagakure would be marching straight to its destruction!
