Chapter 9: The Walled City's Airbender

Six months ago.

Samaya came to the orphanage looking for Jun because he didn't call back just like he promised.

She found Yui with a serious expression and was instructed to meet her later at her house and was given the address.

Samaya asked her what was happening but Yui remained secretive.

Once at Yui's house, Yui hugged her and invited her in. In the living room, a man she hadn't met before introduced himself as Xiao Dan, Yui's husband.

"What's going on? Why couldn't you just tell me at the orphanage?" Samaya furrowed her brows.

"It was dangerous. Courtesy of Jun and Global industries, all official law enforcement organisations were provided with all kinds of gadgets and gizmos for investigation. One of them is what we call a bug." Xiao Dan brought out a decice as small as his fingertip and showcased it to them between his fingers. "We plant this somewhere you wouldn't be able to find to listen in on your activities."

Samaya tilted her head as to why she was being told this information.

"I think the orphanage might be bugged. That's why I instructed Yui through our radio that we use only for us that she should be careful. That's why she brought you here."

"I stills don't get it. What does this have to do with Jun?"

"It's easier if I show you." Xiao Dan reached for the tv remote and pointed it towards the television.

Zzzt! Click!

'We're here from the police headquarters with the chief of police for a news update. Chief Wei. What do you have to say?' The news reporter brought the microphone towards Chief Wei.

Samaya scanned Xiao Dan and Yui who had their eyes closed as if they already knew what the Police Chief was going to say.

'Today, at 1pm, I regret to inform that the CEO of Global Industries died a tragic death.'

Samaya widened her eyes. They were talking about the death of Jun's adoptive grandfather. Her heart began to beat rapidly.

'Our findings conclude that he had been murdered by his own grandson, Jun.'

"What a load of bull..." Xiao Dan gritted his teeth, enraged.

'The murder weapon used in the crime, a sword, has already been identified as his, and the fingerprints on it were a match.'

'May I ask, what of the perpetrator, Jun?' The reporter asked.

'He's still at large. At this time, I would like to ask all citizens of Repbulic City to not approach him. He is armed and dangerous. Act with caution and call us immediately when found. We have already asked other law enforcement agencies in other cities for their coope- '

Tak. The television turned off.

"Wha- ! But Jun could never- !"

Samaya's eyes were visibly shaking.

"We know, Samaya." Yui held her hand to calm her down.

"Do you know where Jun is now? Is he here?"

Samay frantically scanned the house for possible hiding places.

"He's not here Samaya." Yui said to her.

Samaya's eyes started to well up tears.

"I warned him just in time and told him to leave the city." Xiao Dan said.

"No..." Samaya was filled worry.

Pat. Pat. Pat.

Xiao Dan moved closer to Samaya and crouched until they were at eye level. Clutching her shoulders, his grip signified urgency. "You have to find him, Samaya. You have to help him."

Samaya looked at Xiao Dan's eyes expressing intensity, and then looked at Yui who was pleading with hers.

Samaya showed determination in hers and nodded.

A week passed by and Samaya had not found Jun yet. She used her glider and flew over Republic City, making her presence know. Even in the forest surrounding Republic City.

It was currently a race on who finds Jun first.

"He's always been smart. Of course he wouldn't let himself be found easily." She muttered to herself as she landed on top of a tall building. "He must already be in another city by now."

She was wrong.

It's true that Jun was smart enough to not get found, but he still stayed inside the forest just a few miles away from Republic City to train.

Covering his naked body in mud and immersed himself in the wild. Even the spirits inside the forest stayed away from him when he acted like this.

And so, Samaya decided to travel to a place he was sure to go eventually. The historical walled city of Ba Sing Se. They always talked about how they wanted to go there together when they were children with the stories about Avatar Aang.

If she goes now, she'd be there ahead of him because she can travel faster. The perks of having an Air Bison. (Ba Sing Se is two weeks away if Jun decided to go there from Republic City on foot.)

Days turned into weeks. Weeks turned into months.

Samaya had stayed at the walled city of Ba Sing Se for over six months now. Still sure that Jun would come eventually.

She found a job as a server in the city's famous tea house, the Jasmine Dragon.

"Here you go~" Samaya served the customers tea with delight.

"The tea is as fragrant as always as you are beautiful, Samaya."

"Stop it~" Samaya waved away the middle aged lady and covered her blushing cheeks with her sleeves.

"Fufu... if that man you're waiting for doesn't turn up, please reconsider marrying my son."

"I can't do that. He'll show up eventually~"

Over time, she had formed an information network with the Jasmine Dragon customers. Showing them a picture of Jun when we has a kid, describing him as a handsome man with fair skin and a pointy nose, because she can't use a readily available picture of Jun when he was older (A bald headed criminal).

Frankly, all the people in Ba Sing Se regularly visits the three storied tea house. No information does not pass through there.

That's exactly why she chose to work there.

"Oh, that reminds me. It isn't the man you're looking for, but they say a feisty girl entered the walls. They say it was the rebellious granddaughter of the Fire Lord." The middle-aged woman used the common slang term for Ba Sing Se as "The Walls".

The granddaughter of Fire Lord Izumi has been said to have an unpleasant attitude and is constantly getting into trouble.

"I guess I better be careful. Haha." Samaya beamed a smile.

"I'll keep my ears open in case this mystery man of yours appears." The middle-aged woman made a playful smile. "What a lucky man. Having a beautiful airbender like you waiting for him."

"Ahahaha" Samaya scratched her cheeks in embarrassment.

Her beautiful long hair that's always been free has been tied up into a ponytail, showcasing the airbending tattoo on her forehead and nape.

She wore the green uniform of a server in the Jasmine Dragon teahouse instead of her traditional air nomad clothing, but she rolled up her sleeves, proudly showing the airbending tattoos on her arms.

The news of a beautiful airbender working in the Jasmine Dragon spread across the entire city when she first came.

Her presence alone nearly tripled the sales in the first few months.

She didn't mind it because of the probability that Jun might hear it and come see her.

Just then, a fierce looking woman wearing fire nation clothes walked inside the building.

With sharp eyebrows and a menacing smile, her hands confidently put behind her back signifying authority and power.

If anyone knew what Azula looked like in that place they would surely mistaken her for Azula.

The only difference would be the headband covering her forehead.

But she is Azula's great great grand-niece.

Ozira, the granddaughter of the current Fire Lord, Izumi.

"Is this the establishment you were talking about?" She turned to the other girl that was with her.

"Yes. The most famous tea house in all of UR. Established by the late Lord Zuko's uncle whom your father, General Iroh, was named after." She happily responded.

"Since it's a recipe from my family, I'm sure they would meet my expectations." Leading the way, she moved towards a table.

A table that was currently occupied.

"Move." She ordered the man enjoying his tea.

"I'm sorry?" The man was confused.

"Apology accepted. Now. Move."

The man furrowed his brows. "Who-"

Krrrrrrrr!

He was about to voice out his refusal but his chair moved him to another table.

"I'm sorry, miss. He's kind of stupid, you see?" It was the owner of the Jasmine Dragon, Lina. An earthbender.

"Hey! I'm not-" The man that got moved was about to complain again but one of the restaurant's staff covered his mouth with their hand and beamed a hospitable smile.

"Please..." Lina gestured towards the now vacant table.

Ozira nodded in satisfaction and took a seat. Her attendant followed.

Lina locked eyes with Samaya and gestured her to come over.

Samaya nodded and immediately went over.

"This is Samaya. She'll be your server today." The owner introduced her.

Ozira's eyes went from Samaya's arms, scanning all the way over to her forehead. Folds appeared between her eyebrows along with a frown.

"Get us another server." She said.

"Oh, but Samaya is one of our best. I'm sure she'll satisfy-"

"I don't care. She's ugly." Ozira waved her hand as she looked away like she couldn't stand the sight of Samaya.

Everyone in the establishment turned their heads at them with their mouths agape.

Even the staff that was covering the man's mouth earlier lost strength in his arms and dropped them, revealing the man's jaw dropped.

Samaya was very popular to everyone in the city for her beauty and charm. Be it male or female, she manages to capture they're eye.

But this fire nation brat dared to say she was ugly.

"I- It's fine." Samaya awkwardly waved her hands and made an awkward smile. "It's about time for my shift to end anyway."

Ozira was still looking away but her attendant was making an apologetic smile.

"O- okay..." Lina reluctantly said. "Bruce!" A man fashioning a bowl cut with a smug smile came over as Samaya backed away.

"Phew..." Even though she got called ugly, she didn't get angry but was just relieved that she didn't get to interact with such a person anymore.

After changing her clothes, she came out of the employees locker room, only to bump into the girl that was with Ozira. She came out of the other door that led to the women's restroom.

Awkward...

Samaya subtly bowed her head and started walking away.

But before she could get far, the girl called her.

"Um, hey...!" Samaya turned her head towards her. "I just want to apologize for earlier." Ozira's attendant, that looked about the same age as Ozira, awkwardly scratched her cheek. "She has quite an attitude, I know, but she's actually nice. It's just that-"

She suddenly cut off her words and paused for a bit before straightening herself out. "Khm! Anyways, I'm Ayumi." She extended her hand towards Samaya.

"...Samaya." She contemplated about shaking Ayumi's hand for a second before ultimately shaking it.

"You're an airbender. Why are you working here in this city?" Ayumi asked.

"I'm... waiting for someone. It's a long story."

"Oh..." Ayumi was a little disappointed that Amaya didn't answer fully, but she just let it go. "I wish you well, then." She said with a bright smile.

They both nodded and went their separate ways.

After work, Samaya likes to go on top of the western wall where she can see the sunset.

Feeling the breeze flow through her air nomad garments, meditating and circulating her chi, the spirits gathered around her.

"Where are you, Jun..." She whispered in the air.

After the sun sets, she likes to stroll around the city before going home. Greeting everyone and playing around with children.

"Woah! Hahahahaha!" The kids laughed as she performed a trick. Balancing on an air scooter as she does a handstand.

Jumping up with her arms and floating down to her feet, she bowed.

Clap clap clap clap. The children applauded with wide grins on their faces.

"I still can't believe I'm seeing a live airbender and not just on television." The vegetable vendor said as she leaned on her stall and caught her chin with her hand.

A documentary has been made about the restoration of the air nomads as a people and the work they did to restore the air temples which took years to finish and stabilize.

"Just give it a couple more years and you'll probably see us everywhere." Samaya replied with a smile.

"But they won't be as beautiful as you."

"Ahaha..." Samaya scratched her cheek with embarrassment.

"Oh yeah, take this along with you." The vendor handed over a bag of old cabbages and carrots.

"For toto?" Samaya's eyes sparkled.

The vendor nodded in reply. Toto was Samaya's air bison.

"Thank you so much! I was thinking of buying a cabbage for me too." She said as she dug in her pocket for money.

"Hahaha." The vendor was pleased.

Samaya hummed happily as she strolled towards her apartment, enjoying the bright lights of the city at night.

"Hmm, Hmm Hmm~" Then, she suddenly halted. "Huh?"

On the corner of the street, she found Ozira arguing with someone.

"Heh..." 'Even the coldest winds find their way to another winter' Samaya thought to herself, remembering the teachings in the Air temple. Tenzin used to say this when disciplining the young airbenders. It basically meant that a bad person will eventually find someone as bad as them or as worse than them.

The one Ozira was arguing with was a young man of her age, and was infamous in that part of the city for always causing trouble, along with his gang of delinquents.

"Just because you're a freaking princess doesn't give you the right to waltz around like you own this place. You ain't in the Fire nation anymore, sweetheart."

"I am NOT you're sweetheart!" Ozira shouted.

"Hihihi!" Samaya covered her mouth as she snickered playfully. 'Let the wind carry what the heart doesn't need.' She said in her mind. She plans to ignore what was about to come.

A fight was brewing between the two sides, and Ozira and Ayumi was outnumbered two to eight.

Samaya wasn't mad at being called ugly, she was mad how she acted all high and mighty to everyone and not just her.

Although she feels sorry for Ayumi, who was nice to her earlier, she thought Ozira needed to learn a valuable lesson.

"Hmmm..." Curiosity struck Samaya.

In a disadvantageous situation, the two young ladies were not nervous at all.

"Calm down, Ozira." Ayumi massaged Ozira's tense shoulders. "Can you guys just let us through? We really don't want any trouble." She said to the gang members.

Ozira was one thing, but the seemingly gentle Ayumi, although wearing a troubled smile, seemed more worried about the other group getting hurt.

'Come to think of it, why would royalty travel with only one member of their entourage?'

They have confidence that they're strong.

Fwooosh!

Samaya soared up to the nearest building.

Moving through the roofs without a sound until she got closer.

She wanted to see how strong they really were.

Although airbenders were taught how to be pacifists, they were also taught to be ready to fight at anytime. Especially because of what happened at the start of the hundred year war.

Samaya doesn't brag, but only Jinora and Tenzin himself can rival her in sparring.

That's why she was curious how Ozira and Ayumi was going to fair against eight people.

"You know what? I'm feeling very generous today. You guys can pass." Tony, the leader of the group of delinquents said while making a proud smile.

"Thank y-" Ayumi's words got cut off.

"Only if the princess here does us a favor-"

Bzzzzzt! A stream of lightning buzzed past Tony's head. He was able to dodge it by an inch.

"Uhhhh..."

But the one behind him got hit instead. Smoke rose up from him as he groaned.

Ayumi was the one that attacked. Her gentle eyes turned cold. "Don't mess around with little Ozira." She said, devoid of any emotions on her face."

Ozira sighed as if this always happens. "I'm not little anymore..."

"Tsk! Get 'em!" Tony signalled the rest to attack.

They were earthbenders. Rocks shot out towards the other two.

Ozira bobbed and weaved through the barrage like a pro boxer with her hand up.

But Ayumi swayed in the wind, her footsteps light as a feather, no movement was wasted.

"...!" Samaya, watching on the rooftop, was astonished. Ayumi's movement was similar to airbending, although it wasn't.

Bzzzt! "Gugugugu!" Ayumi electrocuted one of them as soon as she got close. Only seven left now.

"Oop!" Ayumi crouched down with a calm smile.

Fwoooosh! Flame shot out from Ozira who was behind Ayumi and hit another one. Six enemies left.

Ayumi, from her crouching position, flipped backwards as rock emerged on the ground towards her.

Bzzzt! She shot another lightning as she flipped.

Five enemies left.

Ayumi, with her hands behind her back and towards Ozira's side, paused as she scanned their enemies.

Ozira and Ayumi looked at each other and nodded.

Fwoosh! Fwoosh! Fwoosh!

Ozira did a one two punch combination and then fired off another flame with a roundhouse kick.

Ayumi rushed them as well with two fingers pointed downwards on both hands.

Bzzzt!

Every time she lifted her hands up, a stream of lightning fired off.

Only three enemies left including Tony.

"Kh!" Sweat dripped down Tony's forehead.

He needed to do something, fast.

"Both of you, take on the princess. I'll get the zappy one." He ordered.

Boom! Krrrrrr!

The ground spiked up and headed towards Ayumi.

As she stepped back, she noticed Tony grinning.

"Hahahaha!" He laughed as he followed the other two who rushed towards Ozira earlier like he planned all along.

Ayumi widened her eyes. She unknowingly created distance from Ozira.

Ozira bobbed and weaved the incoming attacks but as her three opponents got closer, a pillar of earth hit her side.

"Ugh!" She widened her eyes in pain.

As she tried to regain her footing, a punch flew towards her head.

"Ozira!" Ayumi ran towards her but she wouldn't make it in time.

Ozira moved her head to the other side but the fist grazed the side of her head, inadvertently removing the headband she was wearing.

Another rock hit her stomach and made her trudge away.

"Guh! Urgh!"

It was strange. Ozira clutched her stomach but then snapped her back straight and held her head.

"Oh no!" Ayumi ignored their opponents and ran straight towards Ozira who was twisting in pain.

"Argh! Aaaaah!" Ozira screamed, battling the pain.

Ayumi made her lie down as she endured her throes of agony.

"Hahahahaha! What is this? A bender shouldn't be so soft."

Ayumi ignored Tony's mocking and still had her back towards him. She was more focused on calming down Ozira who was kicking.

Tony noticing this got irritated. "Hey..."

As he was approaching them, a strong gust of wind stopped him in his tracks.

Fwoo! Fwoo! Fwoo!

A woman wearing Air nomad garments carefully landed on the ground between him and the two girls.

"That's enough." She said.

"It's that airbender from the Jasmine dragon!"

"Ja-Jasmine Dragon...!"

Samaya tilted her head. She was confused why the fact that she worked at the famous tea house warranted such a reaction.

"Tsk!" Tony backed away. "Let's go."

Picking up their members, they hastened to leave.

When they finally left, Samaya turned towards Ayumi and Ozira who was breathing heavy and her eyes restless.

"Haaa...Haaa..."

"Breathe, Ozira. Circulate your chi." Ayumi said as she assisted her with her hand on Ozira's back and the other holding Ozira's hand.

Samaya slowly approached. Her figure blocking the light from the streetlights made Ayumi glance towards her.

"What's happening to her?" Samaya asked.

"She has a rare condition- it's currently attacking her."

"I'll help you get her to a hospital."

"No. It's not something a doctor can fixed." Ayumi replied, her expression was visibly worried.

Samaya crouched down and examined Ozira. She reached out toward her other hand and felt her forarms. Closing her eyes, she felt Ozira's chi.

"Her chi is in disarray... I've never seen something like this before." She said.

Ayumi looked at Samay with a troubled look.

A gentle breeze started to flow around them.

"...!" Samaya's eyes suddenly shot wide open.

"A large amount chi is accumulating in her mind's eye!"

Samaya's words made Ayumi jolt.

"It's like it's been blocked from flowing..." Samaya reached her hands out towards Ozira's forehead

"No!" Ayumi tried to stop her but it was too late.

Samaya's thumbs had already pressed on Ozira's forehead above both eyes.

"GAH! GRAAAAH!!!" Ozira's contortions worsened.

"Wha-" Samaya saw light forming on Ozira's forehead and Ayumi tackled her away.

Fwoosh! Boom!

The light fired towards the sky and exploded!

"I can't believe it..." Samaya dazedly looked upon Ozira who had unfocused eyes and was calming down. "... combustion bender..."

Ozira finally fainted after Samaya's words.
