Chapter 10
Chapter 10: The Violent Teacher
The last class in the morning was the Japanese language class. Of the fewer than 10 students left in the class that were still “persisting” at paying attention, to his surprise, the iceberg-like girl was among them.
The rest of the students, like the fool duo, the explosive kid, the blonde girl, and others, accounted for about a third of the class. They were openly sleeping, playing with their phones, gaming, and reading magazines or comics.
The remaining students were in the middle ground, neither blatantly ignoring class nor completely attentive. They were the ones who adopted a “no one gets blamed” attitude, testing the limits by zoning out here and there, assuming it wouldn’t matter.
Hikigaya noticed all of this and couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. This is probably what they mean by one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, and here it was more like a whole lot of bad apples.
Feeling resigned, Hikigaya decided to focus on his own work. At least that way, he could have peace of mind.
“Hello, everyone, I am your Japanese language teacher…”
A tall, long-haired female teacher in a white lab coat and black women’s suit walked up to the podium with confidence. Hikigaya frowned slightly. The voice sounded strangely familiar. When he looked up, he immediately stood up with a “bang” as the sudden loud noise attracted the attention of the entire class. Even the ostrich girl next to him was trembling in fear.
“Shizuka-sensei?!”
Hikigaya stared in disbelief at the teacher standing at the podium. His mind was in a storm, and he didn’t care about the looks from around him. All he could think about was one thing.
Why was Shizuka-sensei, who was supposed to be teaching at Sobu Middle School, here?!
But Shizuka-sensei on stage was completely calm, as if she had never known Hikigaya. Her tone remained unchanged as she spoke.
“Student, it’s class time now. Please follow the classroom rules and sit back down.”
At this point, Hikigaya finally calmed down slightly, and the class returned to normal, as though the previous scene had been just a small interruption. However, Hikigaya’s eyes remained fixed on the teacher at the podium.
Gradually, Hikigaya managed to completely regain his composure. Throughout the lesson, it felt as though ants were crawling over his body. It was difficult, but he managed to get through it until the end of class. However, Hikigaya didn’t rush to leave. He waited a while before standing up to leave.
At that moment, the school’s loudspeaker suddenly broadcasted an announcement, made by the same girl from yesterday, with a voice that was stern yet somewhat cute.
“Hello? Can you hear me? Ah, okay, cough, cough… Good afternoon, new first-year students. The briefing session for the club activities will be held at 5 PM today in the First Gymnasium. Students who are interested, please be sure to be there on time. I repeat, today…”
However, Hikigaya wasn’t interested in the announcement. He quickly walked to the first-year teacher’s office on the south side of the academic building. After asking Chabashira-sensei, he learned that Shizuka-sensei wasn’t just a Japanese language teacher, but also the student life guidance teacher.
According to Chabashira-sensei’s information, Hikigaya soon made his way to the student life guidance office on the second floor.
As he entered, he saw Shizuka-sensei standing by the window, holding a lit cigarette. It seemed as though she had been expecting him. She greeted him with the same indifferent attitude as she had in class.
“Well, if it isn’t Hikigaya. Haha, it’s been a while. Your eyes still have that spark!”
“Shizuka-sensei, why are you here at this school? Were you forced into another matchmaking arrangement…?”
Bang!
Just as Hikigaya was speaking, a punch blew past his face, and a drop of cold sweat ran down his forehead.
So, she really is the violent teacher, huh!
“Sorry… sorry, I won’t do it again!”
After Hikigaya quickly apologized, Shizuka-sensei snorted, indicating that she forgave him.
“So, how was the surprise I prepared for you today?”
“Surprise? This was clearly a shock!” Hikigaya said with a black line on his face.
“Haha, you rarely get such an opportunity to be shocked! After all, since…”
Shizuka-sensei suddenly stopped mid-sentence. Just as she was about to continue, Hikigaya interrupted her.
“By the way, Shizuka-sensei, why are you here at this school? Shouldn’t you be at Sobu Middle School at this time? What happened?”
“Uh… how should I put this…?” Shizuka-sensei faltered, which made Hikigaya feel something was off.
“Shizuka has already left Sobu Middle School~”
A voice suddenly came from the door. It was Haruno, who had appeared out of nowhere. She walked in, looking at Hikigaya in surprise.
“Eh? You didn’t know? Looks like your news sources are a bit behind, Hikigaya-kun!”
Then, Haruno turned to look at Shizuka-sensei with a somewhat resentful gaze.
“Shizuka~ I can’t believe you’re here having secret meetings with students. I was even planning to come look for you to have lunch together~”
Hikigaya was stunned upon hearing this, but he didn’t care about why Haruno had suddenly appeared. Instead, he turned to Shizuka-sensei and asked, “Shizuka-sensei, why did you quit your job? Wasn’t it just during New Year’s that you said you were going to work hard?”
“But I heard that Shizuka decided to leave right after finishing teaching this year’s class, you know. After all, that incident had a big impact~” Haruno added.
“What do you mean?”
“Hikigaya-kun, you should have heard about the scandal that happened among the second-year students at Sobu Middle School, right? It was even on Chiba News…”
“Haruno!!”
Shizuka-sensei immediately called out to stop Haruno, but it was already too late.
Hikigaya was left in shock, standing there, looking at Shizuka-sensei with a bitter smile.
“Teacher, you said that incident wouldn’t have much of an impact on you. You said it was all resolved…”
Hikigaya froze halfway through, then suddenly realized. He lowered his head and muttered self-deprecatingly, “Heh, I was so naive. That incident was so big that even the vice-principal and several teachers were investigated. It even made it into the news media! How could I have been so naive? Especially since I was the one who started it.”
Hikigaya looked up at Shizuka-sensei with a bitter smile.
“So, you were dragged into this because of me? I guess it makes sense. The one who caused the problem—me—managed to graduate unscathed. There must be something I don’t know behind the scenes. Teacher, you left to protect me… sacrificing yourself for me? I can’t believe I actually believed that…”
Hikigaya clenched his fists tightly. His heart was filled with rage, but he couldn’t find any reason to vent. He knew very well… that he had no reason to be protected.
The only thing I resent is that naïve, weak version of myself!
Hiratsuka Shizuka pressed her forehead with a pained expression, sighing helplessly while glaring fiercely at Haruno, who seemed utterly indifferent to the situation.
“Sigh, Hikigaya, I’ve said it before—there’s nothing you did wrong in this situation. Though your approach was… a bit extreme, you were absolutely not the cause of the mistake. If anything, if it wasn’t for you, this mistake might have gone uncorrected for a long time, and there would have been even more victims.”
At the same time, Shizuka silently sighed to herself. If she had noticed sooner, perhaps there could have been a better solution. The situation wouldn’t have gotten so out of hand, and it certainly wouldn’t have led you… to this point. It’s all my fault as your teacher.
Hiratsuka Shizuka reached out and gently rubbed Hikigaya’s head, trying to comfort him. “Hikigaya, don’t you often say that everything has two sides? From another perspective, if that incident hadn’t happened, we wouldn’t have crossed paths again at this high school, right?”
In a normal situation, Hikigaya would have entered high school, and Hiratsuka Shizuka would have stayed at the middle school, and their relationship would have gradually cooled. But that unexpected incident changed both of their life trajectories. Sometimes, Hiratsuka Shizuka found their odd teacher-student bond quite amazing. Fate is truly mysterious.
But no matter how much Hiratsuka Shizuka tried to comfort him, Hikigaya kept his head down, showing no reaction. Seeing this, Hiratsuka Shizuka couldn’t help but feel a little irritated. She grabbed Hikigaya’s face with both hands and said in an exasperated tone, “Hey, Hikigaya, you don’t really think I quit my job because of you, do you? Boys your age are really such a hassle, so full of themselves!”
“Think with that brain of yours—if that was the case, there’s no way I’d be at this school!”
“Then why…” Hikigaya asked.
“It’s a rotation system.”
Hiratsuka Shizuka explained irritably, “If I didn’t want to leave, those old folks… those people wouldn’t have let me stay, you understand? This is just a regular rotation, and I applied for it myself. Do you think I could just show up here so easily if it weren’t for that?”
“I see,” Hikigaya nodded. The teacher rotation system wasn’t something rare. It was mainly to ensure relative fairness and balance in education, and it wasn’t limited to the teaching profession. Other industries and government jobs also had similar systems.
But then Hikigaya raised another question. “But Shizuka-sensei, you were teaching at a middle school. Can you really transfer between school levels? Usually, the rotation happens once every six years, and if a teacher graduates and starts working in their 20s, then they’d be due for a rotation by now…”
Hikigaya didn’t finish his sentence before he noticed a certain “death stare” directed at him. He immediately smartened up and shut his mouth.
“The matter has already been settled. There are no problems with the Education Committee, so from now on, I’ll be a high school teacher!” Hiratsuka Shizuka huffed.
