Chapter 23: A TRAIL LEADING INTO THE UNKNOWN
Leyla and Naru hurried through the palace halls, their steps swift and filled with energy. Servants and advisors merely nodded as they passed, already accustomed to their unpredictable antics.
"Alright, princess," Naru said as they descended the staircase. "If what we found in the library is true, the next clue isn't hidden in some boring old temple."
Leyla eyed him suspiciously. "Meaning?"
"Meaning… we're heading to a very specific place on the border between our world and the spirit realm."
Leyla abruptly stopped. "Excuse me? The border between worlds?"
Naru grinned. "Sounds exciting, doesn't it?"
"No, it sounds dangerous!"
"Which is exactly why it'll be fun."
Leyla rolled her eyes. "Oh sure, because who doesn't love a little life-threatening adventure before lunch?"
"That's the spirit! Come on, we're leaving now!"

The Space Between Worlds
Their journey led them to a vast valley wrapped in shimmering mist. The trees flickered between reality and dream, and the ground occasionally shifted colors as if it were unstable.
"Okay, this is… different," Leyla murmured, observing the surreal landscape.
"The border between worlds isn't a fixed place," Naru explained. "It changes, just like the energy that flows through it. Lost things from between dimensions appear here."
Leyla sighed. "So, an ideal place to lose my soul or something?"
"Don't worry, I'll protect you," he said, his voice overly serious but with a teasing smile.
Leyla crossed her arms. "That's what worries me the most."
They ventured deeper into the valley, where waves of magic pulsed through the air. Naru followed the traces of energy while Leyla tried not to lose her footing.
"I think we're close," he said, gently touching one of the glowing symbols etched into a nearby stone.
At that moment, the ground beneath Leyla trembled slightly. Instinctively, she stepped back—only for her foot to slip on a slick rock.
"Oh, for—"
She didn't finish her sentence before she fell backward onto the rough stone, which was covered in some kind of shimmering dust.
"Leyla!"
In an instant, Naru was by her side, lifting her as if she weighed nothing.
"Am I… am I still in one piece?" she asked, rubbing her sore shoulder.
Naru let out an exaggerated sigh, his face a mix of panic and dramatic concern.
"Princess, this is terrible! You might have broken a bone, or worse… you might die!"
Leyla blinked at him in disbelief.
"Naru, I hit my shoulder."
"But what if it's internal bleeding?! What if—"
"Naru."
"I can't let you die in my arms, how could I—"
"Naru!"
He stopped.
Leyla gently cupped his face and pulled him closer. "I'll survive."
He blinked. "…Are you sure?"
"Positive."
"But you still might—"
"Naru!"
He paused, then sighed but didn't let go of her immediately. Instead, he rested his forehead against hers.
"You know, I could get used to this. I really don't like the idea of you being hurt."
Leyla shook her head. "I could get used to your theatrics. Who would've thought a yokai prince could be this dramatic?"
Naru chuckled. "Princess, you still don't know anything about me."
"Oh, trust me, I know enough."
With his grin and her forehead pressed to his, the space between worlds felt a little less terrifying.
After Leyla's "catastrophic" injury—which in reality was just a minor bruise—they continued their search.
"Alright, princess," Naru said as they walked through the mist. "The next clue should be somewhere around here, but we need to find it before the border shifts again."
"So, we're on a time limit?"
"More or less… An hour, maybe two. Or five minutes, depending on how the energy moves."
Leyla shot him a look as if she was about to punch him. "Of course. And you didn't tell me this earlier because…?"
Naru smirked. "I thought you liked challenges."
"Oh, I love them, especially the ones where my life hangs by a thread," she muttered as they continued moving through the strange, glimmering valley.
As they searched for the next clue, somewhere far away—yet close enough—someone was watching.

Dark Eyes in the Shadows
On the other side of the dimensional border, in a chamber cloaked in dark flames, someone sat on a towering stone throne. His black claws slowly traced along the armrest, and a long coat of dark leather draped over his broad shoulders.
His face was sharp, with high cheekbones and thin lips curled into an unreadable smile. His eyes weren't red like blood, but rather like rusted metal glinting in the firelight. His long, coal-colored hair was half-tied in a loose bun, with stray strands falling over his forehead.
His name was Raizen.
And he could hear them.
His gift—or curse, as some called it—was the ability to listen to echoes between worlds. Every spoken word, every whisper from the border resonated in his mind.
And now…
"Oh? They've found a new clue…" he murmured, resting his chin on his hand.
His long fingers drummed against the stone.
"How interesting."
He leaned forward, dark magic curling around him like thick smoke.
"Just a little more… just a little…"
He closed his eyes and listened.
"Naru, if you call me 'princess' one more time, I swear I'll hit you—"
Raizen chuckled.
"Delightful. Truly delightful."
Raizen's palace was nothing like Naru's. It had no gleaming halls filled with light, no lavish decorations, and no playful court attendants. No, his palace was built from darkness itself—woven from shadows that entwined into its walls, from mist that never faded, and from silence that echoed like the distant howling of the wind.
Located at the edge of a world known only to those who dared to step into his domain, the palace was hidden between realities. Its black towers stretched endlessly into the sky, and its massive obsidian gates were adorned with runes that glowed with a crimson light.
Inside, upon a throne carved from solid black stone, sat the master of this world—Raizen.
His reputation was woven from both fear and reverence. Some saw him as a just ruler; others, as a ruthless opportunist. The truth, of course, lay somewhere in between.
Raizen was not a demon, but he was not a pure yokai either. His blood carried traces of ancient beings, evident in his eyes—too piercing, too hypnotic.
He possessed the ability to hear the echoes of the world—the whispers that crossed the boundaries of reality. He could not see Leyla and Naru, but he could listen to their every step, every conversation, every emotion resonating in the ether.
And now, they were getting closer to the artifact.
An artifact he had not stolen… but one he desired.
Not for power. Not for dominion.
But for what it had the ability to unlock.
He rose from his throne and stepped forward, the flames casting flickering shadows over his silhouette.
"I'll see you soon, princess."
