The World They Left Behind

Chapter 25: The Night Guardian’s Smile

Their steps retraced the vibrant path of the night market. At every corner, they paused to sample tantalizing delicacies. Sana chose a slice of honey cake layered with nuts, sweet and sticky, while Nico savored a warm lentil soup served in a small clay bowl.

"This..." Nico lifted his spoon, his eyes sparkling under the glow of the lanterns. "This is what they call life."

Sana chuckled softly, her gaze following two young children dashing by with brightly colored balloons. "More than that," she said gently, "this is what they call a second chance."

At the end of the market, the melody of a small string instrument began to drift through the air. Its soft, yet penetrating sound cut through the crowd, infusing the atmosphere with a newfound magic. Nico stopped, closing his eyes for a moment, letting the notes seep into him.

Sana watched him, a small smile gracing her lips before she suddenly grabbed his hand. "Let's dance," she said cheerfully.

Nico opened his eyes, confusion etched across his face. "Dance? Here?" He glanced around, feeling as if the entire market was watching him. "Sana, I..."

"We don't have time to be shy," Sana interrupted, her laughter ringing in the air as she pulled him harder. But before they could step into the center, a commotion suddenly erupted near a large stall at the end of the street.

The red lanterns hanging above the stall swayed wildly as a small crowd began to gather around it. Voices clashed in a cacophony, tension rising in what had been a tranquil evening.

Nico and Sana exchanged glances. A spark of curiosity ignited between them, an invisible pull urging them closer. Without a word, they walked toward the crowd, their steps brimming with a thrilling anticipation. Whatever awaited them there, the enchanting night of Kashgar had just taken a turn.

At the front of the stall, the crowd fell silent. It was as if time had stopped, with every gaze locked on the creature before them. Its body resembled a cat's, but it was the size of a large dog. Its shimmering golden-purple fur, glowing under the oil lamp light, looked like living silk, reflecting light in a soothing rhythm. Large, ever-changing eyes emitted a spectrum of colors, staring at the crowd with profound stillness. A long, forked tail swayed slowly, like mist dancing in the air, while luminescent patterns on its back rippled with its breaths, as if alive with a mysterious pulse.

Without a sound, the creature stepped forward, exuding a sweet, foreign fragrance that seemed to caress everyone around it with a paralyzing curiosity. Awe and reverence rippled through the crowd, an invisible wave sweeping them off their feet.

"What is that? I've never seen anything like it," Sana whispered, her voice trembling with an almost uncontrollable wonder.

The creature lifted its head, as if hearing her question. The sound it made was a blend of a cat's purr and the rustle of wind—soft, yet filled with enchantment.

An old merchant behind the stall chuckled, raising his hand to calm the murmuring crowd. "This is a hean, a creature from the Kashgar mountains," he said with pride. "I found it when it was just a cub, likely separated from its pack. It felt like wandering into the Amazon and discovering something we never imagined before."

He smiled, his eyes twinkling at the memory. "I used to be an animal researcher, but even I could hardly believe my eyes when I first saw it. The locals here? They were just as amazed as you are now. At first, I thought it was a dream or some kind of illusion. But it's real. You can feel it for yourself."

The crowd began murmuring again, a few chuckling softly, but Sana remained transfixed by the creature. Her eyes shone with genuine curiosity.

The merchant continued, "The people here call it the Night Guardian. Legend has it, it brings good fortune to anyone who can make it smile."

Nico raised an eyebrow, skepticism lacing his voice. "This creature can smile?"

The old merchant nodded slowly, his smile faint. "Only to those it deems sincere."

Without hesitation, Sana crouched down gently in front of the creature. She extended her hand softly. "Hi, I'm Sana," she said, her voice as soft as a breeze.

The creature stared at her, its graceful steps bringing it closer. It sniffed her hand cautiously, as if reading the intentions behind her gesture. Then, with a faint purring sound, its thin lips curled into a smile—subtle, but unmistakable.

The crowd erupted into cheers. Some even clapped. The old merchant laughed heartily. "You have a pure soul, young lady," he said, his tone filled with respect.

Sana stood up, her face alight with a smile just as wide. "This is incredible, Nico. This world is real. Its fur is softer than silk, and it's so adorable!"

In her heart, Sana spoke to herself: At least, if the legend is true, good fortune will come. I will be with Arga in the future, in this new world.

Nico chuckled softly, his gaze still fixed on the hean, which now bounced around them playfully. "I thought I'd seen everything in Soltera. But clearly, I haven't. Maybe by exploring this world, we'll uncover more wonders beyond our imagination."

The creature stopped in front of them, flicking its tail once, creating a small whirlwind in the air. It was as if inviting them to venture further, to explore the world beyond the limits of their imagination.

After enjoying their time with the magical creature, Nico and Sana continued their journey through the colorful streets of Kashgar . The lanterns cast warm light that danced on the cobblestone paths, while the hum of the market swirled like a living symphony. Every corner held a wonder that left them momentarily speechless, trying to absorb the marvels they witnessed.

The aroma of spices mingled with the sweetness of melted sugar on grills, creating an atmosphere that felt like a dream. The sound of merchants bargaining and children's laughter filled the air, completing a night that felt nothing short of magical.

At one corner of the market, they stopped in front of an artisan shaping hot glass into small lanterns. The reflections of the firelight danced in their eyes, carrying new hope amidst their journey full of mysteries.
