Chapter 20: Chapter 20
Version 2.0
As the battle rages on, the air is filled with the clashing of weapons, shouts of combatants, and the agonizing cries of the wounded. The village chief, rallying the able-bodied men, forms a defensive line around the edges of the square. The guards fight valiantly, pushing back the bandits with disciplined strikes against an uncoordinated rampage.
The soldiers quickly organised themselves into shield walls to push back their attackers. Their movements are well-practiced, blocking incoming strikes with shields and countering with precise thrusts and swings. The village chief, clad in his bronze chest plate, stands at the forefront, wielding his formidable sword with authority.
Among the villagers, a few brave souls join the fight, grabbing whatever makeshift weapons they can find. Wielding pitchforks, axes, and hammers they charge into the fray, showing determination to protect their homes. Their lack of formal training is evident, but their spirit is unwavering as they stand side by side with the guards.
However, not everyone opts for confrontation. Some villagers, particularly the elderly, the young, and those unable to fight, seek refuge in their homes or other homes, barricading doors and windows to wait out the chaos.
The air quickly thickens with smoke and blood as each side strives to gain the upper hand. The rhythmic clash of blades and the occasional cries of triumph or anguish ring out the chaotic battle.
As chaos unfolds and the village becomes a battleground, Brandon and his companions are left unguarded. Seizing the opportunity, they hastened toward their gear left unattended. The cacophony of battle surrounds them, the clash of weapons and shouts of combat echoing.
However, as they reach their belongings, the flickering light from the burning houses reveals two gangly figures emerging from the side streets. Bandits, clad in makeshift leather armour and wielding rusty weapons, with faces caked in soot and grime gleam with glee when they gaze upon the party.
Without hesitation, the bandits lunge at Brandon's group. Edric and Lyanna show impressive agility. Despite the suddenness, they skilfully evade the bandits' initial strikes. Edric, with strength, disarms one of the attackers, then using his weapon against him, slays him. Lyanna shows her agility, swiftly incapacitating the other bandit, decadently moving the weapon away from the bandit into her own hands, ending him soon after.
Quickly donning their belongings, they make for where the bandits are not. They race down the narrow side street away from the square, the chaotic battle disappearing into the background. Down their path, more bandits emerge. Jon and Brandon, leading the group, engage in a skirmish with groups of bandits blocking their path. Amid the chaotic melee, Jon manages to dispatch a couple of assailants, but not without receiving a light gash to his arm.
Clashing metal and swooshing arrows fill the street as they engage in battle, and though the bandits have little to no training or gear, there are more of them. Jocelyn, with her trusty bow and arrows, demonstrates her skill from a distance, attempting to thin the ranks of the oncoming bandits. However, amidst the tumult, more of the bandits come up from behind the group, forcing her into a brief close-quarters scuffle along with Edric. Though they prevail, Jocelyn isn't unscathed, sustaining a scrape down the side of her arm after the sword was deflected away from her by Edric.
Despite the setbacks, the group presses on, determined to escape out of the village. Though the further they move the closer they get to burning houses and more groups of bandits chasing after or raiding homes.
It is as they are reaching the end of the street, they can see a large group of bandits coming. Some are clad in crafted armour, wielding weapons that are polished and well-kept. Leading this organized bandit group is a man adorned in more refined armour, as he instructs different groups of bandits. A scarred face barks out commands whilst his bronze sword drips with fresh blood.
"Fuck that, inside quick," Brandon gestures to an open doorway. They barge through the doorway as shouting and running feet follow behind. Inside, they catch a fleeting glimpse of the normal contents of a house—chairs, tables, and meals still on it as they charge through, knocking them over.
They rush to the back of the house, running through the open back door and into what appears to be an abandoned communal garden, where snow blankets the once-tended plots. Paths through the snow connect all the houses, a web of frozen trails.
Behind them, the cacophony of voices rises, and before them, villagers burst from the house, their screams adding to the chaotic battle as cheers chase after them. The fourth house to their right is too distant, leaving the second house on their left as their only option—an imposing structure with the unfortunate disadvantage of being ablaze.
Forced on, they sprint towards the fiery structure. As they approach the burning building, their group of bandits emerges from the house they just vacated as they bark orders to chase after them.
Racing into the fiery structure, they find themselves in a corridor with two doorways at the far end. They hope for the best with the right, they enter a spacious dining room with two additional doors branching off. In their haste, Brandon makes a beeline for the furthest door when a disconcerting creaking emanates from the wooden roof above.
"Quickly!" he shouts, charging towards the doorway. Unfortunately, his urgency cannot stave off the inevitable—the room collapses around them. The group scatters, dodging falling beams and splintering wood. The chaos, however, separates them, leaving Brandon, Jon, and Jocelyn on one side and Edric and Lyanna on the other.
They shout out, voices ringing through the chaos, of fire and snaps. "We're fine," Edric reassures them.
The fire intensifies, as Brandon shouts through it. "You know where we need to go—just on the forest edge."
"Got it. See you in a bit, then. Come on, Lyanna, we need to go." Edric seizes Lyanna's hand and darts through another doorway, though not before she calls out to Jocelyn to stay safe.
Brandon takes the lead, guiding them through the doorway that opens onto a clear street. "Toward the edge of the village," Brandon points out the visible village palisade.
The flickering glow of the surrounding fires casts erratic shadows, dancing on the icy ground beneath their hurried footsteps. The occasional ember spirals into the sky, carried away by the chilling breeze.
To the left and right, tightly packed houses bear the marks of a close-knit community sadly abandoned with windows shuttered against the cold, doors half-ajar, giving glimpses of hastily abandoned interiors.
The scent of burning wood and melting snow permeates the air, as crackling flames and the distant shouts of both villagers and invaders call out. With the occasional gust of wind that carries with it the acrid hint of smoke burning their lungs, they press on.
Ahead, the street appears to fork. Brandon leads the group toward what seems like the quickest path to the village's edge. The sounds of chaos echo behind them, urging them to press onward through the winding labyrinth.
Ahead, the imposing silhouette of the village palisade comes into view, its wooden structure revealing signs of the recent onslaught. A main path leads directly to it, accompanied by concealed alleyways and hidden paths to other homes. A breached section in the palisade, charred and partially destroyed, is directly in front of them.
As they traverse the main path, they are halted by encroaching bandits. Though not pursuing them this time. The group observes as the bandits, their attention diverted, race up the street, relentlessly pursuing a group of fleeing villagers.
The desperate sight unfolds as the villagers, a mix of children, women, and a handful of men wielding flimsy weapons, attempt to fend off the relentless bandit onslaught. A chaotic struggle ensues.
"We can't just leave them, can we?" Jocelyn asks.
"Dame straight we can't, come on, let's go!" Brandon charges towards the tumultuous scene. The group joins the fray as the bandits, preoccupied with the vulnerable villagers, become vulnerable themselves. Attacking from behind, the party efficiently dispatches the marauders, freeing the grateful villagers from immediate danger.
"Thanks for that laddie, though they were going te have our hides, Haha." One of the dads says.
"Oh I, proper fighters you lads are. Ta for dat." comments another.
Brandon smiles. "No problem, now come on we need to get the kids out of here."
Together, they hasten their retreat from the beleaguered village, disappearing into the uncharted wilderness beyond as the night air resounds with the echoes of chaos and the collective pursuit of survival.
