For five hours, Bree and I slept in her room. I had checked Demian's report in the morning. It was so organized that even Dem was surprised. Demian said he wanted to work with the bodies more and I agreed. I knew the answer to my questions already. Melissa was not behind it.
It was Azure. He threatened Melissa. He did not control her mind since Dion could detect it as he sometimes spent time with Melissa and Abel.
I let Melissa go, but sent guards with her.
Bree was still sleeping, her leg on my tummy and she had her arm on my face. Honestly- I had mentioned it before- her sleeping posture was terrible.
I sat up as quietly as possible so she would not wake up. Dem had told me about her crush on Abel earlier this year. I had not taken it that seriously. In my defense, my daughter was not the romantic type. So, I thought it was not that serious. But then, Dion told me more about it and it sounded like she was obsessed with Abel rather than being in love with him.
Now, she wanted to do something crazy and I had to do something about it. Dion had told me about what she was going to do today. Dion played the role of a big brother very seriously.
I had some time today. Perhaps I should go and see Ruby. It had been a while since I last saw her. We lived so close but could not even manage to see each other.
Luc and Ruby were getting older while Dem and I remained unchanged for the last twelve years. I saw the lines on their faces and wondered how I would look if I could get old. It was not like I envied them. To be realistic, it was better to not age. But that did not mean I did not wonder. I even wondered what it would feel like to be in my deathbed at old age.
Perita joined me to go to the magic tower. We could easily teleport, but I liked to take the small walk from the palace to the magic tower.
"I'm pretty certain Prince Demian is watching us from his window," Perita said.
"He is nosy," I chuckled. "He knows exactly where his father and I go. He even knows the whereabouts of Dion and Bree sometimes. But mostly, he is interested in us."
"He needs friends, Your Highness."
"He likes to be alone," I said.
"If Lady Ruby and Lord Luc had children, he could have a cousin or two who he could get close to," she said.
Ruby and Luc never had children. It was not like they could not. They simply chose not to. Ruby wanted them in the beginning, then she and Luc saw how Dem and I had to struggle with our children, especially Demian, and thought better of it. Besides, Ruby saw my suffering during pregnancy and childbirth. The birthing of Bree had truly been traumatic for me.
Ruby had been there the whole time and saw it all. That was when she said she would never have children.
"I don't like children that much anyway," Ruby had said.
Bree liked to spend time at the magic tower. Ruby tried to teach her how to sew, but she was not calm enough to master that skill. Dion could sew though. He was the most patient one. Demian also could sew, but that was just to show Dion that he was better at it.
Ruby welcomed us at the door. We hugged and she led me up the stairs.
"Using the stairs is a pain at this age," she said. "I told Luc to build me something so I don't have to use the stairs all the time." I was not old, but I agreed that it was truly a pain to ascend and descend the stairs.
"Like an elevator?"
"What's that?"
"In the other world, you use elevators to get up and down a building," I explained.
"What does it look like?"
I chuckled. It was like telling my children what a tiger was like.
"It's like a small room with doors that open and close automatically when you reach a floor. There are buttons on the wall with numbers on them. You press on the numbers to indicate which floor you want to go to."
"And it just takes you there?" Both Ruby and Perita were amazed.
"Yeah. Kind of like magic, but it's electricity there."
Ruby took us to the drawing room. Every room was on a different floor. Demian always complained about it, but then again, he was lazy. It was a good thing Dem made him exercise every day. To remain healthy, Demian needed to move his body. When he was little, I had to carry him to the library to his tutors; he would sleep on my shoulder all the way there.
Ruby served us cake, biscuits and tea.
"So, how is your day going?" I asked, sipping the tea. It was as good as always; Ruby's tea was the best.
"Good. My back is killing me though. I hadn't realized how old I was getting," she said. "I see Your Highness every day and you are unchanged. I kept thinking that was the case with me too. But really, I'm getting old.
I have to face it."
I smiled weakly. I had no idea what to say to that. Iris also said the same thing. But really, what should I say?
"How are Your Highness and His Highness? You look a little pale."
"Just tired," I sighed. "Dem is doing okay. You know, he doesn't get sick usually. Me and the kids had a coughing fit a few days ago, but Dem remained unaffected even though he spent all the time with me. Nothing affects him. He keeps bragging about it."
Ruby laughed. "Well, His Highness has always been like that."
"Luc barged into my office the other day saying he needed a break from my husband. Is Dem really working Luc very hard?"
"Your Highness knows how it is. Luc likes to exaggerate. It's not as much as before. Well, not less, either. But just not too much."
"I will talk to Dem about it," I promised.
"How are the kids?"
"Same as before. Dion has been working hard. I'm proud of him. Demian has started to work with me."
"I thought you wanted to wait a few years."
"I can't anymore. He keeps pestering me and I can't keep turning him down. Besides, he is efficient. A little too efficient, in my opinion."
"Demian has always been the ambitious one."
I nodded.
"What about little Bree? How is she?"
"Now, that is a long story."
