S1E33 – Gimme a Hand
Amy and I follow Doctor Jenner down the mess of corridors, and eventually come to a section that seems to be sort of a small-scale hospital. As we enter through an automatic door, the doctor speaks,
“Sometimes someone would get infected with one of the diseases we work with. Very rarely, but still. If they did, we would hold them here for both treatment, and to monitor the disease and get more research done. One of my colleagues was working on a new experimental prosthetic. It was supposed to connect with a person’s nerves, giving them a sense of touch. He said that theoretically, it should be functional, but the surgery to do it was simply too dangerous.”
He goes into a supply closet and comes back with a black plastic crate. As he opens it, we see an arm. It doesn’t look entirely real, as the skin on it is still rubbery, but it’s pretty close to realism. It also seems to have been made with a woman in mind. Doctor Jenner continues with his train of thought,
“The surgery requires that the artificial nerves be directly connected with the real nerves. This worked quite a few times, but people would one day suddenly find themselves growing increasingly uncomfortable with the arm. At first it was just them moving it randomly, saying it helped it feel more real. Eventually, however, the subject would be begging to have the arm removed. We don’t know why this happened exactly, but we guess their bodies are rejecting the new feelings after having already lost the arm for an extended period of time.”
Jenner takes the arm out of the case and places it on the table.
“I cannot perform this surgery. I’m not a medical doctor. But, the arm should still act as a good prosthetic. You just won’t be able to feel it.”
Amy takes the arm, noticing that it looks slightly similar to the original, but with metallic lines running down the sides to the wrist. She takes the arm and places it on the bandaged stump, finding it seals around her arm as she puts it on.
Without thinking, her hand opens and closes, causing her to jump. She points with one finger, and slowly starts adding more. She mutters under her breath,
“No way…”
She turns to look at me, with a big smile on her face as tears start to fall from her eyes,
“I’m a fucking cyborg!”
I unconsciously snort, earning a chuckle from her and a smile from Jenner. I stick up my hand and say,
“High five.”
She lifts the hand and gives me a high five, before closing her hand over mine with a big smile. Jenner speaks while we sit there, holding hands,
“Alright. Well, you guys know where the rooms are, you can find one. The canteen is marked at the end of the hallway, treat yourself to some food cooked on a stove.”
He gets up and is about to walk off before he says,
“Ah, yeah, the arm is waterproof as well. Just thought you might wanna know.”
With that, he leaves the room. I look at Amy and see the girl inspecting her new arm, moving it around, clenching and unclenching it, all sorts of things. I smile at her and say,
“Well, you ready to go show it off to the gang?”
She nods her head and says,
“Yeah! I’m starving, too.”
She hurriedly stands up, only to get dizzy and need to sit back down. I put my hand on her shoulder and say,
“Maybe we take it easy, huh? The arm’s back, but unfortunately the blood isn’t. Tell you what,”
I stand up and hold my hand out to help her up,
“I’ll cook you a good steak today!”
We head out of the medical area and head towards the rooms. I come across Clem standing in the hallway, looking lost. I say to Amy,
“How about you go get cleaned up? We’ll meet up in the canteen.”
She nods her head and says,
“Sure. Oh gosh I’m gonna have a hot shower!”
I smile at her antics and go up to Clem. I ruffle her hair and say,
“Well, kid? You gotten cleaned up, yet?”
She shakes her head no, and says,
“No, I was waiting for everyone else…”
I smile at her and say,
“C’mon, let’s pick out one of the rooms.”
We end up getting the one closest to the elevator. Clem ends up sad because she apparently lost her backpack with all her clothes in them. Luckily, I put a couple kids nightgowns in my inventory just for this. Y’know what? Let’s have some fun with this.
I look at Clem, who is currently sulking on one of the chairs in the room. I say to her,
“Hey, Clem, wanna know a secret?”
She looks up at me, with slightly wet eyes and nods her head. I say to her,
“It’s a big secret, alright? You can’t tell anyone else! This is just between me and you, alright?”
She nods her head,
“Alright…”
I lean in in front of her and speak quietly,
“I’m actually a wizard.”
She looks at me and creases her eyebrows,
“Haha. Very funny.”
I chuckle at her acting all angry,
“Seriously! Watch this…”
I make a small hole with my fingers in the shape of an okay, showing her my open palm. I then take my other hand and reach my fingers into the hole, showing them disappearing behind the fingers and not showing up on the other side. I then grab the nightgown and slowly start to bring it out, making it look as if I pulled it out of nowhere, which I did, but anyways.
Clem’s eyes go wide, and a bit of childish spark comes back to them as she exclaims,
“WOAH! HOLY SHIT!”
I’m a little shocked when I hear the cute little Clementine say something like that, but hey, this is the walking dead baby. She’ll be killing people within a year. I pull the nightgown out completely, and grab it with both of my hands showing her the pristine clothing.
“Tada! See, told you I was a wizard!”
