Chapter 54: Ch 54 : An explosive Shen Xue
Shen Xue had always acted like a delicate, dainty woman in my eyes, someone who should be hiding behind layers of protection—not like this, wielding a dagger and stepping out of the secure compartment her brother had created for her.
Sure enough, when Shen Feng noticed that Shen Xue had gotten out of the vehicle, his face turned pale with shock.
"Xiao Xue! Get back in the car! Get back now!"
His voice was so panicked he practically tore his own throat shouting.
But Shen Xue ignored him.
After glancing briefly at the few of us, as if making up her mind, she turned and quickly ran toward the other side of our vehicle—where Chen Pu was.
Was she trying to help Chen Pu?
I kept slashing at the walkers approaching me, and amidst the chaos, I stole a glance behind—Shen Xue had already reached Chen Pu's side.
My heart was burning with anxiety.
If I had the time, I'd be yelling at both of them—why the hell did they come down just to add to the chaos?
Yangyang intensified his attacks, practically taking on the bulk of the walkers charging at us, giving me a brief moment to check on Shen Xue and Chen Pu.
During that time, Shen Feng was still shouting frantically, his voice full of fear:
"Xiao Xue! Get back in the car! Don't scare your brother—just go back!"
Shen Xue stood next to Chen Pu, holding a dagger, and the fierce expression on her face clashed dramatically with her naturally kind features.
Their side wasn't near the road, so the number of walkers was fewer, but a few that had been bypassed by the lead vehicle were now turning and charging toward the two of them, roaring.
Shen Feng was so terrified he couldn't even speak anymore.
I was anxious to circle around and help, but there were simply too many walkers on our side.
Yangyang couldn't handle them all alone.
Despite his young age, Chen Pu was remarkably brave.
He yanked Shen Xue—who was much older than him—back, ready to charge forward with his dagger.
But unexpectedly, Shen Xue, who hadn't said a word until now, gripped her dagger tightly and let out a sharp cry before she charged in first.
She used the safest technique I had taught her before.
Normally so soft and fragile-looking, Shen Xue somehow summoned a burst of brute strength, suddenly kicking down both walkers that had been approaching them!
While those two were tangled on the ground, struggling to get up, she wasted no time—charging straight at the two still standing.
Chen Pu, seemingly stunned by her sudden action, paused for a moment before quickly following her lead.
Shen Xue attacked with surprising ferocity.
Maybe it was fear fueling her strength—she cleaved halfway through a walker's head with a single vicious blow.
Without even flinching at the filthy blood and brain matter that splattered all over her, she immediately turned and ran toward the two she had knocked down earlier, and drove her dagger into them with brutal force.
In just a short moment, Shen Xue—who had never before faced walkers head-on—had killed three of them.
If the situation weren't so urgent, I definitely would've stood frozen in shock.
Shen Feng seemed just as stunned; between slashes, he kept glancing toward Shen Xue with disbelief written all over his face.
Even the man in black fighting alongside him turned to look at her a couple of times.
A sudden, agonized howl from a man rang out up ahead—his voice was full of pain.
Right after that, we heard the bearded man who had somehow made it to the front shouting and cursing:
"Goddamn it! Where's the cover?! Is everyone on cover duty dead?!"
To be honest, I felt a little embarrassed for the snipers on the rooftops.
Even if they were sharpshooters, with this many walkers swarming around, it was asking way too much to expect them to guarantee everyone's safety.
Behind me, I heard the sound of urgent footsteps.
I quickly turned to look and saw Suo Tian leading a group of people rushing forward.
As he passed me, he glanced briefly in my direction but said nothing before continuing ahead.
Suo Tian was carrying a gun, and as they ran, walkers dropped one after another, finally giving the rest of us some breathing room.
The man in black who had originally been fighting alongside Shen Feng instinctively looked like he wanted to follow Suo Tian, but a hand gesture from Suo Tian clearly signaled him to stay behind.
Once Suo Tian and his team reached the front, the intensity of the firepower instantly surged.
In a flash, the air was filled with the sharp rattling of automatic gunfire, the clack of weapons being reloaded, the hum of chainsaws, and the bang bang of sniper shots—it all blended into a deafening storm.
The support clearly made a difference, as the convoy's pace noticeably picked up.
I glanced around and figured there weren't enough walkers left in this area to stop the convoy anymore.
So I gripped my dagger and sprinted off in the direction Suo Tian had gone.
"Yangyang, tell that brat Chen Pu to get back in the car. You stay with Shen Feng!"
Before Yangyang could respond, I had already rushed toward the direction where gunfire was most intense.
Apparently the accuracy wasn't good enough—several people had already drawn their dagger and were engaging the nearby walkers in close combat.
There were indeed far more walkers up ahead than the ones by the car earlier.
But the good news was that, unlike the tightly packed ones that had swarmed the vehicle, the walkers here were more spread out.
There wasn't a situation where they were piling on all at once.
Wielding daggers in both hands turned out to be less effective than just using one, so I simply stuck Xu Shu's knife back into the sheath, clenched my jaw, and charged forward.
Suo Tian had also handed his gun off to someone else and dashed to the front with his longsword.
His strikes were sharp and clean, without the slightest waste of movement or hesitation.
The number of walkers he cut down was even greater than what the submachine guns had managed to take out.
As soon as I rushed in and kicked down a walker, just as I was about to step forward and stab it through the skull, a figure suddenly lunged out from behind me and—thud—drove a dagger through the walker, sending it straight to hell.
Shen Xue withdrew her dagger, stood up, and swiftly kicked down another charging walker.
Then she quickly turned to me and said, "This isn't hard. I can help—don't worry about me."
I nodded, and Shen Xue quickly retreated to my side after dispatching the walker, standing beside me with a lean.
"Chen Yang, I'm not just a girl who cries all the time. Today, I want to unleash my potential like you!"
I glanced at her sideways, curling the corner of my mouth. "Let's see what you're made of."
Shen Xue seemed more intelligent than usual, working seamlessly with me.
I kicked over a walker, and she immediately stepped forward to smash its head, showing no hesitation.
Some fallen walkers were even crushed beneath her feet.
Gradually, Shen Xue and I caught up with the vanguard team and Suo Tian, who were leading the charge.
The vehicles behind us followed, waiting for us to clear the path.
With practice, Shen Xue and I found that we were no longer fighting walkers but mere clay figures that couldn't fight back.
Slaughtering them was effortless.
The firepower ahead intensified, and the number of surviving walkers dwindled.
Soon, Yangyang and Shen Feng from the rear joined the front lines.
Everyone exchanged glances before plunging back into the fray, immersed in their own world of slaughter.
I couldn't speak for others, but deep down, I felt exhilarated.
Watching the walkers fall to the ground, I could barely contain my excitement.
"Get ready to charge!"
I lost track of time, unsure how long we'd been fighting.
Suo Tian's sudden command was just the stimulus we needed.
Everyone's adrenaline surged, and we intensified our attacks, our daggers slicing through the walkers with increased ferocity.
The number of walkers ahead decreased significantly, and we reached the rear of the horde.
Although there were still many walkers left, they were no match for our convoy.
After Suo Tian gave the order, we retreated to the vehicles.
Once everyone was safely back on board, the walkie-talkie crackled to life with Big Beard's voice: "Step on it! Crush these abominable creatures!"
His breathing was labored, a testament to the peril he'd just faced.
The convoy accelerated, plowing through the dwindling walker horde.
When the last walker disappeared from view, I finally exhaled a sigh of relief.
I leaned back against the seat, feeling drained.
Only now did I realize I'd overexerted myself, and my body began to feel weak.
Xu Shu's face was pale and worried as she drove.
I asked, gasping for breath, "What's wrong?"
Before she could answer, I remembered Chen Pu's reckless decision to jump out of the car and turned to look.
Sure enough, he sat with his head hung low, not daring to lift it.
He must have been scolded by Xu Shu.
Honestly, while Chen Pu's bravery was commendable, his awareness of danger was severely lacking.
I understood his willingness to help, but his impulsive action was unacceptable.
If it weren't for that timely gunshot, he might be lying on the roadside, food for the walkers.
Noticing the tense atmosphere, Yangyang, despite his own heavy breathing, tried to lighten the mood: "Sis, I never thought we'd make it through that huge walker horde."
I glanced back at him and played along: "Yeah, we're lucky. The open space and scattered walkers worked in our favor. If they'd been concentrated, we'd have been overwhelmed. Even with eight arms each, we'd have been devoured by now."
"But what's gotten into Shen Xue? She suddenly changed like a different person," Yangyang asked curiously.
Xu Shu, who had been tight-lipped, finally spoke up.
Her tone was still stiff but slightly softer: "She must have been pushed to the limit, or maybe like Chen Pu, she acted impulsively without thinking."
Mentioning Chen Pu's name made Xu Shu's tone turn bitter again.
I understood Xu Shu's frustration.
When someone you care about refuses to listen and puts themselves in harm's way, it's infuriating.
If she could have, Xu Shu would have probably jumped out to drag Chen Pu back to safety.
Rongrong leaned against the backseat, clutching Yiyi tightly.
Her face was pale.
I had a bad feeling.
With Chen Pu gone and only Xu Shu driving, Rongrong was left alone to witness the bloody scene, which must have been traumatic for her.
