Chapter 44: Ch 44 : Moved into a gas station
"Why would you leave that place?"
After Shen Feng and the others walked away, Suo Tian glanced at the black-clad men starting to take action not far away and asked me.
"You should be able to guess — we were forced to, had no choice but to leave."
"Song Meijing is dead?" Suo Tian suddenly asked so casually.
I was stunned for a moment, then shook my head.
"No."
After thinking about it, I added with a smile, "There's no way she'd die that easily."
Suo Tian looked at me. "Did she do something that made you risk danger and run out?"
I shook my head. "Not really, nothing much."
"She deserves to die." Suo Tian said this lightly, then turned and got back into the car.
I didn't follow him.
I just stood there, watching his back for a while, and couldn't help but find Song Meijing laughable.
She hated me to the core because of Suo Tian, wishing I were dead just so she could be happy.
If she heard what Suo Tian just said, I imagine it would be the biggest blow she'd ever suffered in her life.
That group of men in black were extremely well-trained.
The cars blocking the roadside—I thought it would take a long time to clear them, but just as I got back into the car and was about to take a quick nap, I heard someone outside calling for us to move on.
When Xu Shu got back into the car, she couldn't help but remark, "These guys are seriously impressive."
I nodded beside her like a pecking chicken, "I've thought that for a while now. It's like they're all running on cheat codes—fighting walkers like they're teaming up in a game to fight a boss."
Xu Shu was stunned for a second, then burst out laughing at my comment.
"What kind of analogy is that?"
From the back seat, Yangyang chimed in, "My sister's gotten really slick with words lately. You wouldn't believe how stiff she used to be."
Xu Shu turned around with a smile and glanced at Yangyang.
"Really? I wouldn't have guessed."
......
The next stretch of the journey went fairly smoothly.
By evening, the convoy had entered a small town, and I was overjoyed—I'd originally thought we'd have to spend the night in the cars.
There were noticeably more walkers in the town than what we encountered on the road.
Of course, this "more" doesn't refer to the two small walker hordes we ran into earlier, but rather the scattered ones we saw along the way.
The lead vehicle slowly pulled into a gas station.
That's when I remembered—all of our vehicles needed refueling.
Shen Feng's van still had two barrels of gasoline left unused, but even if we took them out, it wouldn't be enough for all these cars.
But clearly, I was worrying too much.
After pulling into the gas station, everyone except the drivers got out with guns in hand and began clearing the surrounding area.
Once they confirmed that the immediate vicinity was temporarily safe, Suo Tian fiddled with one of the gas pumps in a way I couldn't quite follow—surprisingly, the pump actually started working.
I was a bit dumbfounded… truly, having more skills is never a bad thing.
Even though it was obvious they didn't need any help from me out here, the fact that we outsiders could only hide behind them still made me feel pretty uncomfortable.
So I simply got out of the car and wandered behind them.
After getting the gas pump working, someone was immediately assigned to refuel each vehicle.
Suo Tian stood off to the side and happened to glance over, spotting me.
He paused for a moment, then walked over.
"Why'd you get out? Go back to the car."
I smiled. "Just came out to see if I could help with anything."
Suo Tian glanced around. "There's nothing you need to help with. Go rest in the car."
Just as he finished speaking, a few gunshots rang out not far away.
Suo Tian frowned and turned toward the direction of the noise.
Two more gunshots rang out, and he decisively turned around and ran over quickly.
I hurriedly pulled out my dagger and followed.
The gunshots had come from the supermarket next to the gas station.
I glanced at the exterior of the supermarket.
Judging by the large sign, the place looked pretty spacious inside, which also meant... there'd be a good amount of supplies.
Suo Tian looked back at me, furrowed his brow, and said in a low voice, "Stick close to me in a moment."
I nodded at him.
He lifted the curtain covering the entrance of the store, did a quick check, and then rushed inside.
Just then, more gunshots suddenly rang out from within.
As soon as I stepped inside, I could already hear the familiar growls of walkers from a distance.
The supermarket was indeed quite spacious.
If I wasn't mistaken, it was probably the biggest store in this small town.
To be honest though, it was really just a slightly larger convenience store.
I followed Suo Tian, quickly turning past a few rows of shelves, running toward the direction the gunshots had come from.
Inside, more than a dozen walkers were chasing two members of the team in black.
The space was too cramped, and with so many walkers, the two men could only keep dodging and retreating between the shelves, fighting a sort of guerrilla battle—firing a few shots every now and then as they looked back.
Just as the situation came into view, Suo Tian pulled out his dagger and cursed, "Shit!" before charging forward.
At the same time, he yelled at the two of them, "Losers!"
The two men were stunned, but when they saw Suo Tian charging in with his blade, they glanced at each other—then both drew their knives and joined the fight.
The aisles here were too narrow, so to avoid blocking Suo Tian's retreat path, I quickly circled around to the other side and charged forward.
When there are enough people, walkers really aren't that scary.
They can't fight back—as long as you don't get bitten, there's nothing else to fear.
They're like meat on a chopping block, completely helpless.
With four people taking on a dozen or so walkers, it was fairly easy.
Those dozen walkers were quickly hacked down.
Looking at the blood and brain matter splattered all over the nearby food, I couldn't help but feel a little heartache…
We really should've lured them away first before starting the fight.
Suo Tian didn't care about that.
Once the walkers were down, he exploded in anger, yelling at the two men, "Do you even realize we're in a town?! Who the hell fires a gun without a suppressor?!"
The two hung their heads and stayed silent.
It was probably the first time I'd ever seen Suo Tian lose his temper.
I stood off to the side and didn't dare say a word.
"Clean up this place. We'll set up camp here tonight. Don't make such a stupid mistake again."
Suo Tian's tone softened a little.
After speaking, he walked around, grabbed my arm, and pulled me toward the exit.
Unfortunately, he happened to grab right where my wound was.
The sudden pressure sent a sharp pain shooting through me, and I cried out, "Ah!"
Suo Tian, who had been pulling me along, stopped in his tracks.
He looked suspiciously at my arm for a moment, then shifted his gaze to my face.
After staring at me for a couple of seconds, his hand slid down to grasp mine instead.
Without saying anything, he turned and continued walking.
I felt a little nervous—had Suo Tian noticed my injury?
Worried, I followed him out of the supermarket as he led me straight to his vehicle.
On the way, Yangyang stuck his head out of our car window and shouted, "Sis, what happened in there?"
But when he saw Suo Tian holding my hand, his expression froze.
Before I could respond, he quickly pulled his head back in and responsibly rolled the window up.
As soon as I got in the car and settled down, Suo Tian reached out and started trying to take off my jacket.
Instinctively, I shrank back and leaned away, slapping his hand aside and snapping, "What are you doing?! It's broad daylight and there are people all around watching!"
Suo Tian's dark eyes stared at me for a couple of seconds before he slowly spoke with a slight smirk, "You're overthinking it."
Then he reached for my jacket again.
I swatted at his hands and pushed him back a little, shouting, "Overthinking? You're the one overthinking! And doing too much!"
Suo Tian narrowed his eyes and, without another word, grabbed my arm and yanked me forward, pinning me tightly in his embrace.
He held my left hand with one of his and yanked my padded jacket down with the other.
In the blink of an eye, he pulled the whole sleeve off.
The blood-stained shirt underneath was now exposed.
My heart sank—that was when I finally realized the real reason Suo Tian was trying to take off my jacket.
Suo Tian reached out and rolled up the sleeve of my shirt.
The bandages I had wrapped around the wound were now messy and not as neat as they had been when I first put them on this morning.
I didn't have time to feel awkward about his earlier misunderstanding.
Instinctively, I tried to pull away from him, but I didn't succeed.
"How did you get hurt?"
My mind went blank.
How should I tell him?
How should I explain the bite?
What if Suo Tian doesn't believe me?
I glanced out the window at the town, which was gradually getting darker.
If he doesn't believe me, would he leave me here for "safety reasons" or, like with Xiao Zheng, simply "put me out of my misery"?
It seemed I had kept him waiting too long for an answer.
Suo Tian reached for the bandages again, but I grabbed his hand.
"How did you get hurt?" he asked again.
I took a deep breath, glanced at the wound on my left hand, then turned my head and looked at Suo Tian steadily.
"I was bitten."
I could clearly feel Suo Tian's body stiffen.
He stared at me for a long time without speaking.
I couldn't read any change in his expression, and I had no idea what he was thinking.
"What happened?" It took him quite a while to ask this question.
I cleared my throat and replied, "It's exactly what it sounds like. The morning after you left, a student—oh, the one you saw before who was a bit mentally unstable—started going crazy while I was chatting with them. I wasn't prepared, and she bit me."
"So it's been this long?"
I looked at Suo Tian with suspicion.
"Of course. If I hadn't been careless these past few days, the wound would've probably healed by now."
I tried to keep my tone casual, hoping to convince Suo Tian that this wound wouldn't pose any threat to me or anyone around me.
Suo Tian didn't respond to my words, but instead, he forcefully removed the bandages.
When the wound was exposed, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the swelling had gone down significantly.
It seemed that Shen Xue's method really worked—it truly was like a blind cat stumbling upon a dead rat.
Suo Tian held my hand and examined it carefully for a while.
After a clear sigh of relief, he turned to look at me.
Although his expression hadn't changed, there was a noticeable softness in his demeanor compared to earlier.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
I gave a wry smile.
"Boss, I had to be brave first. With the way you showed up, I was all confused. And with what happened with Xiao Zheng, how could I easily tell you about a bite like this?"
Actually, when Suo Tian had sighed in relief earlier, I had already been certain that he believed me.
He's an extremely cautious person and wouldn't do anything without being sure.
Since he didn't act guarded after seeing my wound, it meant that he knew there was no problem with it.
