Chapter 36: Ch 36 : The brother and sister on the bus
The car had been driving for a long time, and the sides of the road had completely turned into farmland and vegetable greenhouses.
The villages were deeper inside, and from the road, you could only see a few houses built relatively close to the outskirts.
For lunch, everyone just ate some crackers.
In the afternoon, to prevent Jun Di and Shen Feng from becoming too tired, we parked the car on a stretch of road where both sides were empty fields.
After checking the surroundings, I motioned for Jun Di and Shen Feng to sleep for a while in the car.
The rest of us stayed outside to watch over them and stretch our legs.
Rongrong was the type to fall asleep as soon as she got into the car.
After waking up, she was full of energy.
Since the car was now parked on such a wide open field, it was exactly what she wanted.
As soon as she got out of the car, she immediately started running around.
Shen Xue kept telling her not to run too far, but she just ran a few laps around the car, showing her excitement.
I found a relatively clean spot, sat down with a smile, and watched Rongrong, who had already started dancing in place.
Earlier, when we were in the down jacket store, Shen Feng thoughtfully picked out several small down jackets for her.
The pink down jacket made Rongrong's already charming apple-shaped face look even cuter.
But...
I put away my smile and thought with some concern.
Living in this world for a long time, what kind of personality will she grow into in the future?
Killing and bloodshed, which should have nothing to do with her, now completely overshadow her life.
We are all trying our best to keep her away from these things.
But is this really for her good, or are we just harming her?
The adults are all pushing themselves to become stronger for survival.
The current world doesn't give anyone any privileges, and those walkers won't spare Rongrong just because she's a child.
In comparison, perhaps what we should really be doing is teaching her how to protect herself early on, rather than trying to shield her behind everyone.
With a sigh, I turned my head to look at the open area on the other side of the car.
A quick glance revealed that at least a dozen walkers were slowly approaching us from a distance.
My head tightened, and I quickly scrambled to my feet, swiftly pulling the dagger from my waistband and gripping it in my hand.
I shouted to Yangyang and the others, "Hurry! Get Rongrong into the car and wake up Shen Feng and Jun Di, there are walkers!"
The car body was blocking the view, so Yangyang and the others hadn't noticed yet.
Shen Xue, who had been chattering at Rongrong just a moment ago, immediately changed her expression, her face filled with fear as she looked around frantically.
"Don't look! They're here, get back to the car!" I held the dagger and ran towards the side of the car.
Shen Feng and Jun Di hadn't even had time to fall asleep.
As soon as I shouted, they reacted and immediately sat up, starting the car.
We quickly climbed into the car, and as soon as the door closed, I urged, "Hurry, go!"
After this commotion, we didn't dare rest on the road anymore.
We drove straight until the sun began to set, not daring to stop.
But Jun Di's face was already showing signs of fatigue.
He needed to rest.
After driving the entire afternoon in such a tense state, he wouldn't be able to keep going if he didn't rest soon.
However, we were in a remote area with no villages nearby, and the sky was gradually growing dark.
We couldn't rashly enter the nearby villages.
I gradually began to feel anxious.
At that moment, a dark spot appeared in the distance.
As the car drew closer, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a bus parked by the side of the road.
'We'll stay here tonight,' was the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw the bus.
I gestured for Jun Di to pull over, and by the time I did, Shen Feng had already parked the car not far from the bus.
It seemed that he and I had the same idea.
We got out of the car, and Yangyang first carried the sleeping Rongrong over to Shen Xue, instructing them to stay inside the car and not come out.
Shen Feng handed a dagger to both Jun Di and Yin Shangtang, asking them to guard by the car.
He, along with me and Yangyang, went to investigate the bus.
Since my left hand was injured, Shen Feng took the lead and walked in front.
The three of us crouched low and approached the bus.
The windows were high, and most of them had curtains drawn, so we couldn't see inside.
I was a little puzzled.
Since the bus was parked in such a remote place, it must have been because something happened here.
But why were the curtains inside all pulled so tightly?
Shen Feng, who was ahead, suddenly stopped.
He turned back and waved his hand at us.
Yangyang and I quickly took a few steps to catch up with him.
I lowered my voice and asked, "What's going on?"
Shen Feng pointed towards the bus door and said, "The door is closed."
I didn't understand his meaning at first and instinctively replied, "Then just open it."
Yangyang shot me a glance and said, "Sis, are you pretending to be silly? The doors on these buses are automatic, and the switch is in the driver's seat."
I gave Yangyang a quick flick on the head. "You little rascal! How do you speak?"
Yangyang rubbed his head, giving me a resentful look.
He pouted and took a few steps back, standing behind Shen Feng.
Only then did he speak, "Sis, what's the point of worrying about details at a time like this? What we should be thinking about is how to open the bus door. Didn't you say we were going to stay in the bus tonight?"
I glared at him fiercely. "What details? Talking to your sister like that deserves a good beating."
"Alright, alright, Chen Yang, why are you arguing with your little brother so seriously? It's almost dark, let's figure out how to open the door," Shenfeng intervened, speaking up for Yangyang.
I shot Yangyang a glare and said to Shenfeng, "It's not that I'm arguing with him..."
Before I could finish my sentence, we heard a 'hiss' sound…
The three of us were startled.
Looking toward the sound, I froze in surprise.
The bus door had opened…
Of course, the door didn't open by itself.
A second after the door opened, a short-haired girl stepped out from the bus…
The person opening the door couldn't be one of the walkers.
The three of us stood there, stunned for quite a while, not having expected there would be a living person inside the bus.
The girl stood next to the door, looking at us with a serious expression, not saying anything, as if waiting for us to speak first.
I was the first to snap out of it.
I cleared my throat, stepped forward, and extended my hand, politely introducing myself, "Hello, my name is Chen Yang."
The girl silently observed the three of us before extending her hand in return.
"Hello, Xu Shu," she said, her voice light but clear.
"You... live here???" I retracted my hand and pointed at the bus, asking in confusion.
She followed my finger and glanced at the bus, then after thinking for a moment, she said, "I live here."
I was taken aback.
I turned to look at Shen Feng and Yangyang, silently asking what we should do.
Since this girl considers this bus her home, can we still stay here tonight?
Shen Feng caught my gaze.
After briefly looking at the girl, he suddenly broke into a big smile.
"Excuse me, would it be alright if we stayed here with you tonight?"
Xu Shu paused for a moment when she heard Shen Feng's question.
I was about to say that Shen Feng had asked a bit too directly, but before I could, the girl spoke, asking, "Who are you people?"
"We're just a group of people who came together by chance after the world changed. We've been hiding for a long time, but a horde of walkers attacked our town. We had no choice but to run, with both adults and children," Shen Feng said earnestly, his expression matching his tone, looking somewhat pitiful.
Although, the way he said it was quite mechanical and unrefined.
The girl was stunned for a moment, then asked, "You have children with you?"
"Yes, my sister is holding her in the car, the child is asleep." Shen Feng answered.
To be honest, if I hadn't known the truth already, based on Shen Feng's current expression, I would have believed that Zheng Rongrong was his real daughter!
Xu Shu slightly tilted her head and glanced at the car.
After thinking for a moment, she nodded toward us. "You can stay here tonight."
As soon as she finished speaking, a loud growl from a horde of walkers came from the front of the bus.
A few walkers were approaching from about ten meters away.
The three of us immediately drew our knives, on alert.
Xu Shu turned her head to take a look, then stretched out her hand toward me.
"Can I borrow your dagger?"
I was momentarily stunned, then nodded and handed it to her.
Taking the dagger, Xu Shu tested its weight in her hand, and her expression suddenly changed.
She turned and quickly ran toward the walkers.
As she neared them, she suddenly stopped, raised the dagger, and with a few swift slashes, effortlessly took down the walkers.
Her technique was precise and ruthless.
I stood there, dumbfounded... This woman is definitely an expert!
Afterward, Xu Shu turned back and returned the dagger to me. "This dagger is good."
.....
I originally thought that Xu Shu was the only one living on the bus, but after getting on, I was surprised to find that there was also a young boy inside, about fourteen or fifteen years old.
Xu Shu said that he was her brother, named Chen Pu.
Sitting next to her, Shen Xue, who was always straightforward, was shocked when she noticed the siblings had different last names.
She asked, "Aren't you two siblings? Why do you have different last names?"
Xu Shu, who had been tidying up the seats to prepare for us to rest, paused for a moment.
Then, with a calm tone, she answered, "We share the same mother but have different fathers."
So they were half-siblings.
Shen Xue, realizing she had spoken out of turn, stuck out her tongue and shrank back.
She then went over to play with Rongrong, who had already started playing with Chen Pu.
"How long have you been living on this bus?" I asked.
"A long time. We've been living on this bus the whole time. The reason we stopped here is that we wanted to rest for the night."
"Wait… you mean the bus has still been running all this time?" I asked, a bit excited.
"Of course."
After hearing this, an idea quickly formed in my mind.
If we could get these siblings to join us, then we could naturally take possession of this bus.
After all, a large bus could carry a lot more than a small van.
Although it makes a lot of noise, it would be perfect for providing us with shelter at night.
