Chapter 155: From Another Place
The view from atop the modified RV was even better than from the tower at the main gate of the shelter. Jason could easily observe the situation outside the walls of the place.
In the distance, the dense surrounding forest truly hindered visibility, which explained why no one had spotted the walkers approaching the shelter earlier.
"It's hard to take out all the walkers now. If we focus on eliminating these undead, we might expose ourselves to the enemies who brought these visitors to us," Daryl said beside Jason.
The situation was truly critical. Walkers were now piling up against the main gate, and it was certain it would come down soon. Defending the place was pointless when the plan was to abandon it—so the process just needed to be accelerated.
"Daryl, we need to move now."
With a nod, Daryl followed him, and both climbed down from the roof of the modified RV. Inside, everyone grabbed their weapons and put on bulletproof vests. Jason took the shortwave radio and announced, "Move the vehicles toward the main gate. Everyone must stay behind the modified RV."
George nodded. The modified RV started its engine and was driven toward the main gate, followed by the other buses. Once they were positioned in front of the gate, Jason looked at Liam and said, "Liam, I want you in the gun port."
"Got it!" Liam grabbed his sniper rifle and climbed up to the gun port.
Outside the main gate of the shelter, a growing horde of walkers was gathering. The surrounding walls were no different and were also being overrun.
Many people who had just finished packing and were running outside saw the scene. Panic spread quickly among those unaccustomed to seeing walkers so close.
The rest, who were still able to move, stared as the walls of the shelter shook violently, and everyone silently prayed for safety.
As the people ran one after another, Jason, outside, scanned the crowd and asked, "Where's Ravi's wife?"
Upon hearing the question, Bob shook his head and said, "She didn't want to leave Ravi. There was another family that chose not to come with us at the last moment. We tried to convince them, but they were stubborn."
"Those idiots... real damn fools," Daryl muttered with a cold expression.
Jason could only sigh at Bob's words. He didn't ask further questions and had no intention of forcing anyone. Looking at his group, he signaled for them to board the modified RV.
"Bus drivers, don't lag behind. And never forget to stay on our tail." Jason climbed into the passenger seat and handed the controls over to George to drive the RV.
When the engine started, the distance between the RV and the gate was thirty meters. Once everyone was seated, George drove the RV forward at full speed.
"Everyone, stick close behind me!"
The bus engines roared to life instantly. A clear gap was left between them and the RV, which led the way.
At that moment, George's eyes were fixed on the main gate. It was already buckling inward, about to collapse at any second.
Just as the gate showed obvious signs of giving in, the modified RV, now accelerating, charged forward.
The modified RV slammed into the gate; its powerful structure and reinforced front were about to show their might.
The gate was on the verge of breaking, but just before the walkers could enter, the massive body of the RV crashed through the center of the main gate. The tremendous force shattered it instantly.
With the gate in pieces, the modified RV pushed forward, crushing every walker in its path. Once through, George's field of view expanded, and everyone could now see the walkers around them.
This vehicle had immense power, and the structure installed on its front could tear through any kind of walker. Every walker in front of the RV was flattened, but due to the distance, the cleared path quickly began filling up again, potentially making progress difficult for the rest of the convoy.
Realizing this, Jason grabbed the radio and shouted, "Fire! Clear the walkers on both sides!"
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Fierce gunfire rang out from the buses behind, and the walkers on both sides of the road were quickly eliminated by the heavy firepower. Thanks to the modifications made to the buses, the convoy advanced without issues.
Jason kept his eyes on the road. Giving George precise directions, he also noticed the density of walkers increasing.
"Remember to stay close. These are just temporary problems. We'll all make it out safely."
After speaking, Jason reminded George about a dead-end alley to the right, and soon they reached the main road.
The roof of the modified RV opened at the gun port, and Jon popped his head out. A machine gun had already been installed earlier, and he skillfully aimed at the walkers. The barrel erupted with a stream of bullets.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Alongside the convoy's gunfire, the dense horde of walkers was cleared, allowing everyone to move forward without issue. Any group of walkers blocking the convoy's path was eliminated. Everyone took advantage of the opening and advanced.
Jason nervously watched the road ahead, distancing themselves from the walkers with the group, encountering no problems.
He had been worried that one of the buses might run into trouble. That would cause many casualties and potentially unleash serious complications.
But seeing that everything was going smoothly, Jason relaxed a bit and gave George a pat on the shoulder.
Looking ahead again at the RV and the convoy, he noticed a group of people running. But just behind them, some figures were emerging from the forest.
Humans, indeed. There was nothing about these figures that resembled walkers. These people were armed, and without hesitation, they raised their weapons and opened fire on the lead vehicle.
Upon seeing this, Jason frowned, turned to George, and reassured him not to worry. But George wasn't willing to take the risk—he hit the accelerator, mowed down a few walkers in the way, and charged straight at the dozen attackers.
Jason knew these people had to be members of the Wolves, and their goal was to take down the modified RV that had attacked their group. Once the lead truck was disabled, the rest of the convoy would be easy to pick off.
A truly vengeful bunch.
Jason was furious and shouted at Jon to open fire through the gun port. The armored windshield took multiple hits and shattered, making it difficult for George to see.
The heavy armor held up against most of the bullets, and the RV kept moving forward. Jon took out many of the Wolves ahead, the bullets tearing their bodies apart. The last remaining Wolf suddenly lost sight of his target. He quickly fired the final two rounds in his magazine, followed by an empty click.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With another burst of bullets, the last Wolf on the road was killed. The wheels of the modified RV and the buses rolled over the corpses without stopping, and the entire group kept moving forward.
