Chapter 99: 98.
"I'm relieved." Chen Kai sighed in relief and satisfaction. Only he knew how tense his heart had been over the past months.
Su Lian was amused by his sigh, thinking that he was being his playful self and didn't put much thought into it.
The elevator reached the lobby, which was filled with tired workers and security personnel. In the middle of the mob, an eye-catching group stood firmly and alert, seemingly waiting for someone.
Su Lian spotted these few from afar and recognized each one, especially the modern-day-looking prince.
Assistant Xiao.
"You sent back the first team?" Su Lian asked the person on the other end of the call. She made her way to the team, who also spotted her. Seeing her on a call, they kept their greeting silent with a quick bow at the waist.
One of the guards took her bags and gestured for her to walk ahead. Assistant Xiao gave her a smile of greeting and stayed two steps behind her on her right.
All of this dumbfounded everyone in the lobby.
They had a bigshot working with them. Why didn't they know this?
"Yes. They will be your team from now on. Uncle trained a specific team for me, and I've trained the first team for you. Things may get messy on your side." Chen Kai explained softly.
"Being your wife is such a tiring job," she complained jokingly. There wasn't a hint of resentment or fear on her face when she heard his words, only a gush of warmth knowing that he was her support.
"Full compensation and comfortable living. A few extras are added," he teased.
"Aye~ Such good benefits, how dare I refuse?"
Chen Kai was full on amused by this woman of his; she knew when to break a tense atmosphere and also when to toughen her spirit.
Ah. He needs to finish up quickly to go by her side.
The two talked about nonsensical things and never got bored.
Under the guidance of the bodyguard team and the curious stares of onlookers, Su Lian left in the three-car motorcade, still chatting to Chen Kai.
Chen Amin watched the disappearing backs of that motorcade. When he reached the lobby, he only caught a glimpse of Su Lian but saw the pomp of Su Lian's entourage. Everybody was talking and guessing about her background.
Is Su Lian a rich woman?
Isn't it said that her boyfriend is the rich one?
A quick flash of resentment, then determination, flashed across his eyes.
"It seems like I have to readjust," he muttered to himself. He began calculating his latest plans, forgetting the blatant rejection that had happened minutes ago. Call it an obsession, he calls it a strict pursuit; his attraction to Su Lian stems from his accumulated pride in his past conquests.
In his eyes, Su Lian is one of the few rare flowers that should be plucked by someone such as him.
Wouldn't it be grand to see her under him? Walking beside him as his little woman. Yes. It would be perfect.
Before he can start thinking of plans to turn things around with Su Lian, an email notification from his department leader and the HR Department comes one after the other.
An ominous feeling stabbed at his chest. Something is up.
In the backseat of the midnight blue Maybach, Su Lian ended her call with Chen Kai and sent a few messages to the girls.
Seeing that she was through with chatting, the Assistant handed her an iPad with an open document on the screen.
Not asking for a reason behind his actions, Su Lian calmly read the file. Going further in, her eyebrows raised in mild surprise, other than that reaction, she was indifferent to the report throughout the five minutes.
"Young Master Li left all decision-making to you. You can tell by their moves who their target is," Assistant Xiao said in a timely manner.
Su Lian stifled the smile playing on her lips when she heard his comment. It was clear that Chen Kai saw 'them' as non-existent.
Her so-called family was reaching out their hands bit by bit.
"What of my mother?" she asked, completely ignoring the report of her brother's movements in Nanjing.
"Third file going down."
Su Lian found it.
Her hands shook as she read sentence by sentence. She felt betrayed and abandoned by these words and the images that were linked to them. Why. Why didn't they tell her?
Was she a fool to them all along? A well-placed bargaining chip?
No. Is this the family she wanted to gain recognition from? The mother she wanted to get closer to.
Tears unknowingly rolled down her pale cheek, her chest burned with anger, and at the same time, heartbreak.
This was the family she was born into. A fucking chessboard with assigned pieces.
The older brother has been indifferent towards her from the age she could write her own name.
Her father was also indifferent to her, but he had been carefully cultivating her to be pleasing to prospective alliances.
Her mother…. Her mother was a stranger to her.
Now she knows why.
Her birth was a simple arrangement.
How can you arrange a human life?!
What the hell is wrong with these people?!
The iPad fell onto her lap; Su Lian stared blankly at the screen, her eyes blurred with tears. "….This." She struggled to speak. She didn't know what to say. All she can do is cry it all out.
Everything was laid out in front of her.
What kind of broken family is this?
Assistant Xiao was a bit flustered beside her. The young madam was crying, and he didn't know if he should comfort her or let her be.
Taking a chance on her distracted state, he messaged Chen Kai.
Xiao: My guy, your wife is crying. I showed her the file on her family.
Kai: She'll be fine in a few. Her crying is a good thing. Order a few meaty, slightly greasy dishes from HaiLou for her and give her friends a heads up. Keep me posted.
Asst. Xiao re-read the text three times before he understood how attentive a man has to be when it comes to relationships. Is it that much work?
Xiao: (ThumbsUp.emoji) Thanks.
He glanced at the young madam, who seemed to be a bit calmer. 'Oh, he was right. Being a husband is a full-time career, huh.'
Su Lian, oblivious to Assistant Xiao's small actions, finally calmed herself. She sat in a daze, watching the evening scenery rush by. Outwardly, she had a look of calm and unbothered after seeing such news, but inwardly, she was cursing herself for behaving so naively back then. She was also very hurt and saddened by it all.
Her entire existence was to be used by the Su family.
Thankfully, she gained clarity. The bravest thing she ever did was to rebel against her father.
If she did stay and let him plan her life, wouldn't she be replicating the life of her parents?
Arranged business marriage, scheduled intimate moments, planned kids, and lived double lives. It is simply tiring to read it all, she couldn't imagine actually going through it all.
A forlorn sigh left her lips, bringing the interior of the car a bit more depressing.
Assistant Xiao patiently waited.
"If they approach the company, go through normal procedures. Their business has nothing to do with me," she said faintly.
"Yes, Young Madam."
Su Lian didn't care what they did, once they kept their distance as agreed. She no longer belonged to the Su family of Hangzhou.
She's the young madam of the Li family of Beijing. The wife of the Li Clan's patriarch.
Why should she step back into the past and torture herself emotionally? It is good to know the truth, and that's it. No need to go further.
It's best to continue with the path she has taken, and that's staying with Chen Kai. Her man.
