Chapter 82: 81.
Su Lian can feel the inquisitive looks towards them over the last hour. The girls and she opted for securing a dinner table away from the excitement; holding out for three hours needed comfort. As the dates for the guests of honor, eyes followed their every move.
Wei Rong and Bai Shun were used to living in the fish bowl, along with Su Lian, but not the other girls.
Su Lian distracted them skillfully bringing in Wei Rong for various topics. Though they created their own invisible barrier of cold indifference to avoid over-enthusiastic matrons, it failed after half an hour of arrival. The girls were approached and the questions that were asked overlapped and were stated in different contexts.
A beauty. Bless your parents. Where are you from child?? What is your family name?
How old are you? You look so delicate.
An educated woman. I'm sure there must be matches lining up for you.
I saw you enter with the young masters from the Ruan and Qin families, are you all close? Friends?
They answered each question succinctly and avoided those who wanted to delve into the private knowledge of Qin Yi and the others. The back and forth went on for a while until Su Lian waved to a waiter who was displaying the menu of the night.
The matrons were displeased by the brush-off but took their leave in a good manner.
"It was a good thing to partner up," Ye Jun said lowly, watching the backs of the matrons leave.
"If there were any openings of a single status for any of the guys, countless blind date requests would be sent to their homes," Bai Shun commented. She visibly shuddered after the thought of eager mamas pushing their son's resume toward her folks for marriage. Thank heavens her parents are all for free love and detested arranged marriages for profit.
Listening to Bai Shun's words, Lin Fa giggled foolishly envisioning handsome young men sitting side by side as she reviewed their resumes. The girls rolled their eyes at her in amusement knowing she was thinking something silly.
Throwing that minor event away, they ordered a few light dishes that they recognized on the menu and doubled whatever each girl asked for. The boys gave them free rein over the dinner.
To them, this dinner party was a pit stop on their little vacation, they didn't really pay much attention to these people and kept them on a neutral level of communication.
"Oh! The guys are free," Wei Rong yelled.
They turned to see them walking towards the tables, what a sight it was for them. Lifting their phones, shutter sounds filled the interlude of their talk. How can they pass up the chance to see these male gods together?
The guys on the other hand were used to their randomness and played along, giving them plenty of material.
Chen Kai slipped into the chair next to Su Lian and pulled her closer to his side.
"Can you be more obvious?" she quipped playfully.
" I'm saving them the trip of walking over to get rejected," he said glaring at the men who were eyeing her. The few who were caught returned glares of their own and turned away.
"Thank you for your protection, Master Kai." She kissed his cheek to ease his fierce look. Playing along with her, he raised his head with a proud and arrogant expression to fit his role of Master.
"Aye! Aye! No more flirting the food is here," Liu Shao shouted from across the table.
"No need to share that dog food."
"Leave us, single dogs, some dignity."
"Ah~ Look at that blush."
Waving off their friends teasing, they received their prepared dishes and tucked in after they were all served.
"Your new brother seems to be adjusting well," Shang Ren commented.
"Yeah. He totally deviated from the normal path in these situations," Lin Fa added with an annoyed expression. She was the one who really wanted a huge drama scene to play off.
Chen Quan laughed at her complaint. "Boyang is self-aware of his strength in terms of eloquence and capability. His so-called position as heir of the Chen Clan bred his pride and arrogance. Well, half of it was nurtured by his mother."
"It's always the mother," Wei Rong lamented.
"Don't say that she's from a patriarchal family and believes everything is her son's so she has the highest authority in the family," Ye Jun asked turning to Chen Kai for an answer.
The need for drama was clear in their eyes.
With a helpless sigh, he gave her a positive answer.
"Novels do reflect reality," Lin Fa gushed.
"You have no idea. Where do you think those CEO novels come about and the ones with the lucky stupid female leads." This coming from Ruan Zhenhong made it the truth to their ears.
Lin Fa, a light novel lover, was pumped to have her creation known. Inspiration is little and the plots of many are the same but…. There's a story that can be used. Her eyes moved to the guy pampering her best friend. Hehe~
" Brother Chen let me write your story."
Chen Kai: My real story will have you questioning your life. Let's rethink this.

The next day was considered a lazy day for those at the Green Bamboo Estate but in other places, the quiet harmony between relatives was broken.
One email was the start.
One video was the center of the chaos.
One man sat leisurely in his private atrium having a hearty breakfast, ignoring the woman yapping next to him.
"Chen Huai have you finally lost your mind? How dare you give away what is your son's? Chenyu Group is meant for the heir of the Chen Clan, have you no shame!! Did Father approve of this? No. I don't think so. He wouldn't be so foolish to give away everything this family worked for."
"Then those who worked hard to build Chenyu should get a piece right?" Chen Huai asked unhurriedly as he took a sip of tea.
Emotionless eyes watched Sun Yilan closely waiting for her answer.
The image of an elegant and poised woman was nowhere to be seen. It was after Boyang's 8th birthday that she dropped that image in front of him and took over the care of their son. The woman before him was calculative and selfish. Everything that she wanted to claim was done through Boyang; she kept using his position as the eldest son of the main family and the wife of the present patriarch to get her worth.
"Of Course!" Her shrill voice broke the warm ambiance of the atrium.
"And who are those people? Not the members of the Chen Clan? Do you really think one person carried Chenyu to where it is today? Or do you think Boyang can take over smoothly with his current aptitude? There are better people suited to be the CEO of Chenyu Group; better than your son."
Those questions and statements stabbed at her weak points. She knew he was right but she won't allow anyone to take what is hers… her son's.
"Quiet? That's how you should be. You have no right to question my handling of Chenyu, not even your natal family. Tell your dear brothers not to stretch their hands too far, it will be cut off. LEAVE!" Chen Huai's fierce momentum startled her.
Where was the gentle and elegant husband from over the years? Sun Yilan narrowed her eyes in suspicion. Chen Huai saw the look in her eyes and blatantly ignored her after giving a dismissive wave. This made Sun Yilan's resentment for this husband of hers grow but she was presently cautious of him. Something has happened for him to let go like this. She must tell father.
Turning on her heels, she left the atrium with a loud clatter of her steps following her departure.
"That's one. The other will come soon," Chen Huai murmured, sipping his tea unbothered.
Back in Hangzhou, Chen Quan replayed a video for the third time. He couldn't really explain his feelings at the moment but the most prominent sentence in his mind is – What The Fuck is going on? In one night things have changed and he has no idea which direction things will go.
Did First Uncle suffer a blow to the head after meeting Cousin Kai? Is Kai really not taking over Chenyu? Is First Uncle like his brothers? Why is he doing this?
He quickly made a call. He didn't even bother to check the time but he knew the person would answer.
"Father, why is Uncle doing this? Is the second branch going to partake in this 'competition?"
Chen Quan's father didn't answer. On the other end of the line, he had a tired look on his face but there was a bit of relief in his brown eyes. Listening to his son's worry for the family; Chen Quan has grown up different from his cousins in the main family and third family. He was taught to live for himself and not the family.
"We're not. If any of your cousins contact you, you are free to brush them off. The second branch will remain on the sidelines as usual. Your first uncle isn't finished yet."
