Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Test of Resolve
The oppressive silence of the room was broken only by Adam's labored breathing and the faint sound of runes being unrolled. The golden light on the walls flickered softly, a stark contrast to the chaos that had filled the room moments before.
Mirae stood up, dusting her hands as she scanned the area. "This should end his tenure on this base." For now, we're safe. "Are you sure?" Adam hissed, pushing himself into a sitting position. "I feel like I've been hit by a magical freight train."
Do-hyun, still leaning against the wall, managed to chuckle slightly. "You've earned this break."
Adam glanced at the center of the room, where the Wraith had disintegrated. A faint glint caught his eye.
"Uh, guys?" Adam pointed to the glowing object in the Wraith's ashes. "What's this?"
Mi-rae turned suddenly, her expression darkening as she approached the source of the light. In the soot was a small black piece, its surface smooth and glassy. It pulsed faintly, an eerie rhythm that sent a shiver down Adam's spine.
Mi-rae crouched down beside her, her hand reaching over the fragment without touching it. "This isn't normal."
Adam stood up, staggering a little as he reached up. "It's the understatement of the century. Is it dangerous?"
"Probably," Mi-rae said, her voice tight. "Energy corruption doesn't just disappear. It continues and sometimes takes on new forms."
Adam frowned, staring at the fragment. "So... what do we do with it?" Should we destroy it? Should we burn it?"
"Not at all," Mi-rae said dryly. "Destroying something like that without knowing what it is can make things worse." «
Do-hyun struggled to his feet, face pale. "That's right. This fragment... ..could be a fragment of the Wraith's heart. If it's not marked, it can regenerate itself or, worse, transfer its power to someone else."
Adam took a step back, his stomach clenching. "Great. More nightmare fuel. So what's the plan
Mi-rae pulled out a talisman, its intricate pattern glowing faintly. "We have it under control."
He carefully tore the talisman into pieces. The paper glowed with golden light and the basin sparkled brightly before settling into a dull light.
"It's stable for now," Mi-rae said, lifting. talismanic light. He placed it in a reinforced pouch on his belt. "We'll take it with us. It'll take time to figure out what this thing is and what it's capable of."
Adam grimaced. "Carrying a part of an evil shadow monster? That sounds like a great idea.
Mi-rae looked at him. "If you don't have a better solution, we'll do it my way." »
Adamu raised his hands defensively. "Very well, very well. Don't blame me when he starts whispering scary things in the middle of the night.
Mi-rae ignores him and turns to Do-hyun. "We can't stay here. The Black Veil will send the others when they realize the Wraith is gone."
Do-hyun nodded weakly. "There's an old shelter in the eastern tunnels. It has not been used for years, but the protection should still continue. »
Mi-rae helped him to stand, while Adamu took his bag. Together they left the room, the faint glow of the purified runes following them like a distant echo of hope.
As they moved through the tunnels, Adam couldn't shake the anxious feeling that had left pieces in his chest. Its throbbing rhythm lingered in his mind, like a faint whisper that he could not understand.
"Mi-rae," Adam said softly. "What if this fragment... what if it was still connected to the Black Veil?"
Mi-rae stared at him, her expression unreadable. "It's possible. But if that's the case, it's better that way we have it more than them. »
Adamu wasn't convinced. "What if he follows us now?" »
Mi-rae tightened her grip on the bag containing the fragment. "Then we'll take care of it." While we sorted out everything else.
Adam nodded reluctantly, though the discomfort in his chest didn't go away.
The group continued in silence, the weight of the particles crushing them all.
**Suspense**: Deep in the basin, a strange light flickered. A distorted voice whispered faintly, its tone filled with mischief. "Soon." ..you see. ..my return. .. "
