Chapter 8: Madness, Lie Tian Stained with Blood
"A side mission has been activated: Rescue Luo Ling."
Just as Ke Bei threw out a flying dagger, a clear voice suddenly rang out in his mind.
"Completing the side mission will grant a second lottery draw opportunity."
Upon hearing the system's prompt, Ke Bei was stunned for a moment, and then a look of joy appeared on his face.
"A second lottery draw? Does that mean I can draw two martial arts skills at once?"
Ke Bei's heart skipped a beat. His current strength was too weak, and every lottery draw was of great importance. The lottery draw meant the chance to obtain new martial arts skills and a leap in strength. How could he not be excited?
Ke Bei quickly immersed his mind into his head and carefully checked what the so-called second lottery draw meant. After seeing the golden words flashing in the system, Ke Bei was a bit disappointed.
The so-called second lottery draw opportunity didn't mean that he could draw two martial arts skills. Instead, after completing the mission of killing three hundred red-haired zombies within ten days, if he was not satisfied with the martial arts skill he drew, he could have another lottery draw. If he was satisfied, the second lottery draw would be automatically cancelled.
It was equivalent to having one more choice, but in the end, he would still only get one martial arts skill.
"This is already very good. I was being too greedy." Ke Bei shook his head and gave a bitter smile.
Both emotionally and rationally, since Luo Ling had saved him, he should take action. Now that the system had issued this side mission, there was even more reason for him to act.
While Ke Bei was in a daze, a group of red-haired zombies surrounding Luo Ling kept roaring. Some bold zombies had slowly approached Luo Ling. They found that this terrifying being in front of them seemed to pose no threat anymore.
"Aowu~"
A red-haired zombie closest to Luo Ling suddenly let out a roar towards the sky. It couldn't hold back its ferocious nature any longer. It tentatively stretched out its dark claws towards Luo Ling's neck.
"No good."
Just as the zombie's claws were about to touch Luo Ling, Ke Bei let out a loud shout, and the three-inch willow-leaf-shaped dagger in his hand shot out.
Boom.
The red-haired zombie fell to the ground with a thud. Ke Bei's expression was serious, and he quickly rushed towards Luo Ling.
"Whoosh whoosh."
While running, the flying daggers in his palm were frantically thrown out. Two flying daggers almost simultaneously shot and killed the two zombies closest to Luo Ling.
Ke Bei wasn't very far from Luo Ling originally. In the time it took for two breaths, Ke Bei rushed in front of Luo Ling. He picked Luo Ling up in his arms, carefully looked around, and searched for the best escape route.
"To the west."
Ke Bei saw that there were only three zombies in the northwest corner. Suddenly, he felt a surge of joy in his heart. It was definitely not possible to fight head-on. With his current physical quality, shooting out the flying daggers five or six times in a row was already his limit. If he did it more, he couldn't ensure the accuracy.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh."
Not daring to hesitate at all, three flying daggers in his palm shot out like lightning. The three zombies in the northwest corner let out a mournful cry and then fell to the ground.
"This is the moment."
Ignoring the sore and swollen wrist, he picked up Luo Ling and rushed out.
Roar roar roar.
The red-haired zombies roared wildly. Seventy or eighty zombies roared together, and the deafening sound rumbled like thunder.
"Escape."
There was only one thought in Ke Bei's mind. He held Luo Ling and fled desperately. While the zombie horde hadn't reacted yet, he quickly distanced himself from the zombie horde. But the good situation didn't last long. Just as Ke Bei had carried Luo Ling and escaped about three meters, the zombie horde behind suddenly roared wildly.
"Damn it."
A chill suddenly ran through Ke Bei's heart. His speed was originally a bit faster than that of the red-haired zombies. If he could escape from the encirclement of the red-haired zombies, he might be able to get away. But now, carrying Luo Ling, his speed was greatly reduced.
"Ao."
With a roar, a zombie at the front had already approached Ke Bei. Without looking back, Ke Bei raised his hand and threw out a flying dagger. He didn't dare to stop for a moment. Otherwise, once surrounded by the zombie horde behind, the only outcome for him would be to be eaten by the zombies.
"Peng."
Throwing out five flying daggers in a row made Ke Bei's wrist extremely sore. In a hurry, the angle of the flying dagger he threw out again deviated slightly. It failed to hit the weak point between the zombie's eyebrows, and the flying dagger hit the zombie's skull heavily.
"Roar."
The zombie at the front had its forehead hit by Ke Bei's flying dagger. But with Ke Bei's current strength, if he didn't hit the vital part, he couldn't cause any harm to the zombie at all. Instead, it aroused the zombie's ferocity.
Its bloody mouth opened wide, its fangs protruded, and its claws glowing with a faint light struck towards Ke Bei fiercely.
Smelling the foul odor exhaled by the zombie and feeling the howling wind in his ears, Ke Bei's thoughts turned rapidly. It was too late to escape, and he could only resist head-on.
He suddenly bent down, quickly put Luo Ling on the ground, and pulled out the simple saber that was diagonally carried on his back.
These series of actions were completed in one go. The moment Ke Bei pulled out the simple saber, the zombie's claws had already been raised high.
Just as the zombie was about to bring down its claws, Ke Bei suddenly turned around. Instead of retreating, he rushed forward. He closed in on the zombie and swung the simple saber in his hand horizontally upwards. Before the zombie could exert its strength, he intercepted its next attack.
"Boom."
The simple saber hit the zombie's arm, making the zombie stagger and step back a few steps.
"It's too late."
Ke Bei was extremely anxious. Just as he blocked the zombie that rushed to the front, another zombie rushed up from behind.
"Die."
Ke Bei's eyes were blood-red. With a furious shout, he spun half a circle and stood in front of the zombie. He swung the simple saber in his hand again.
"Peng peng peng."
In an instant, Ke Bei swung three strikes. Only by relying on the technique of the "Intercepting Saber" could he stop the second zombie, but it was impossible to kill it.
"I don't want to die yet."
Ke Bei's eyes were bloodshot, and the veins on his arms bulged. While he blocked the two zombies that rushed to the front, more zombies swarmed up.
"Roar roar~ Aowu~"
In an instant, four more zombies rushed up. Ke Bei waved the simple saber in his hand with all his might, but simply relying on the technique of the "Intercepting Saber" couldn't withstand so many zombies at all. His foundation was too weak, and his strength was too small.
"Get out of the way."
Suddenly, a zombie bypassed Ke Bei and rushed towards Luo Ling who was lying on the ground. Ke Bei let out a roar, leaped up, and swung the simple saber in his hand down fiercely.
"Peng."
A dull sound rang out. The defensive power of the red-haired zombie was astonishing. Even a first-level gene enhancer would find it very difficult to kill one, let alone an ordinary person like Ke Bei.
But Ke Bei successfully attracted the attention of that zombie, and for the moment, Luo Ling was out of danger. However, the price was that his shoulder was severely pierced.
The dark claws pierced through Ke Bei's shoulder. Drops of glaring red blood flowed down his arm, onto his palm, and stained the wooden handle of the simple saber.
Ke Bei stood in front of Luo Ling, looking resolutely at the dense red-haired zombies constantly swarming in. He knew that this time he was probably doomed.
"It's not that I don't want to save you, but I don't have the ability. Since you indirectly saved my life, then I'll die with you."
Ke Bei looked down at Luo Ling's beautiful face, gave a bitter smile, and then turned around to stare fixedly at the ferocious zombies that had surrounded him.
Just as Ke Bei turned around, Luo Ling, who had her eyes tightly closed, suddenly had her long eyelashes tremble. Her eyes under the eyelids were spinning rapidly, as if she really wanted to open them, but in the end, she still couldn't.
"Come on. Even if I'm going to die, I, Ke Bei, will die standing."
A fierce look flashed in Ke Bei's eyes. He held the simple saber horizontally in front of his chest. If a person wasn't afraid of death, then what else was there to be afraid of? So what if it was a zombie horde? So what if he was surrounded?
The fearless Ke Bei didn't notice that the ancient characters "Lie Tian" engraved on the wooden handle of the simple saber actually emitted a faint silver light after being stained with his blood.
This silver light was very thin and faint, like a silver thread. The silver thread swam down along the handle of the saber and instantly covered the rusty blade.
"Roar."
With a roar, the red-haired zombie's thick arm swung horizontally towards Ke Bei. Ke Bei's face was ferocious, and the veins on his forehead bulged. It wasn't his character to just sit there and wait for death. He suddenly took a big step to the side, and the simple saber in his hand met the howling iron arm.
"Pu chi."
The zombie's thick arm flew out instantly. Ke Bei's eyes widened in shock, and he was too stunned to speak at what had just happened.
The zombie, whose body was as hard as iron, had actually had its arm cut off by his single strike.
"How could this be?"
Ke Bei's eyes were filled with disbelief.
"Aowu~~"
Hearing the zombie's mournful cry, Ke Bei didn't have time to think carefully about what had happened. He raised the simple saber in his hand and slashed at the zombie's neck.
"Pu~"
The simple saber hit the zombie's neck. It was as if he had cut into tofu. There was no resistance at all, and he easily cut off the zombie's head.
"Hahaha, all of you die for me."
Ke Bei looked at the simple saber in his hand in surprise and suddenly burst into wild laughter.
"Pu chi~ Pu chi~"
Ke Bei kept moving his steps and spinning his body. The power of the "Intercepting Saber" was fully demonstrated. Although the strength used in each strike was very small, the angle was almost perfect. With the divine weapon in his hand that could break metal and stone, he killed the six zombies at the front in the blink of an eye.
The green blood of the red-haired zombies stained his whole body. Ke Bei's face and body were covered with a layer of pale green.
"Come on."
Gripping the simple saber tightly, Ke Bei's face was cold, and his heart was extremely calm. The technique of the "Intercepting Saber" became more and more proficient. Every seemingly casual strike of the saber sealed the zombie's strength completely.
"Roar roar roar."
The dense zombies swarmed in like a flood. Ke Bei calmly watched them. The movement of each zombie was clearly imprinted in his mind. He carefully used the simple saber in his hand to block the zombies' attacks. If he really couldn't block them, he would dodge, making sure that no zombie could touch him.
"Die die die."
Ke Bei held the simple saber in his hand. His face stained with green blood looked extremely ferocious.
He had gone crazy. Ke Bei had been fighting the zombies with such ferocity that there was no trace of fear left in him. Like the God of Death, every time he swung the simple saber, he would reap the life of a zombie.
For a full four hours, Ke Bei fought wildly with the red-haired zombies. He didn't know how many strikes he had swung or how many zombies he had killed. His arm had long been numb and had no feeling at all.
Finally, after killing the last zombie in front of him, Ke Bei suddenly felt his legs go weak. His body involuntarily knelt down. The arm holding the simple saber was swollen three times its original size. All the muscles in his body were in a stiff state, and his body was trembling slightly.
"Are they all dead?"
With great difficulty, he raised his left hand and wiped the stinking green blood off his face with his dirty sleeve. His dry and chapped lips opened and closed slightly. Ke Bei looked dull and muttered to himself in a low voice.
At this moment, Ke Bei was like a blood-covered person. There was the pale green blood of the red-haired zombies on him, as well as his own blood. Although he tried his best not to let the zombies touch him, it was impossible not to get injured after fighting with seventy or eighty zombies for four hours. At least three of Ke Bei's sternum bones were broken, his left thigh bone had been pierced by the zombie's claws, and there were dozens of shocking wounds all over his body.
Although he had fought the zombies with an unyielding will as hard as a mountain, his body and spirit had long reached their limits. Now that he finally relaxed, an irresistible wave of fatigue swept over him, and his eyelids were as heavy as mountains.
He bit his tongue hard, trying to keep himself awake. Ke Bei used the simple saber to support himself on the ground and slowly walked in front of Luo Ling. Gritting his teeth, he used all his strength to carry Luo Ling on his shoulder.
"Stay awake. Damn it, stay awake."
Ke Bei staggered and almost fell. Then he shook his head vigorously. His teeth bit through his lips, and the intense pain made him a bit more awake.
Carrying Luo Ling, it took Ke Bei a full hour to reach the dilapidated attic that was only about thirty meters away from him. With each step he took, a bloody footprint was left behind. The moment he reached the top floor of the dilapidated attic, Ke Bei's head tilted, and he completely fell into a deep sleep.
