Chapter 100: Octavia/Bullet

"…The Pirate King."

Octavia read the newspaper delivered by the News Coo. Her former enemy, Gol D. Roger, now held that title.

The man who had obtained everything the world had to offer.

The man who had shattered her and Rocks' ambitions. It wasn't a pleasant thought.

But she understood that Novem – Kanata – didn't seem to share her sentiments.

While she didn't know the details of their relationship, she understood they were at least on friendly terms.

It was a complicated situation, but she had abandoned her duties as a mother. She had no right to interfere with Kanata's life. She had considered seeking revenge against Roger for defeating Rocks, but Rocks himself had accepted his defeat and passed away. It wouldn't be right for her to act now.

After much deliberation, she had decided to focus on honing her skills – until Kanata came to kill her.

"We'll be arriving soon. Be prepared."

"Y-Yes, ma'am…"

Octavia stood on the deck of a large ship. She had subdued the ship's captain and was forcing him to follow her orders.

They were approaching Westland, a massive island nation also known as the "Westernmost Point".

It was a large island, but most of it was occupied by a single, colossal mountain that pierced the clouds. Even seasoned pirates stared in awe at its sheer size.

"W-We've followed your instructions, but… We're disembarking here, right?" the captain asked nervously.

"No, we're climbing the mountain."

"Climbing the mountain?!"

The captain stared at her, incredulous.

Octavia, her face still concealed by her mask, ordered him to furl the sails. They were approaching a cove.

The captain, confused and unsure of her intentions, reluctantly obeyed.

"…The clouds are covering the peak today. We're lucky."

Octavia glanced towards the mountain, then took out a whistle-like object. She lowered her mask slightly and blew into the whistle. A shrill sound echoed across the sea. The pirates, nervous and anticipating the unknown, waited.

– And then it happened.

A massive shadow appeared beneath the ship, lifting it out of the water.

"W-What's that?!"

"A shrimp… It's a shrimp! A giant shrimp is lifting our ship!"

"A shrimp?!"

They looked over the railing and saw a colossal shrimp carrying their ship towards the cove.

It continued inland, following a river, then – began climbing the mountain.

The captain finally understood what she meant by "climbing the mountain". He suddenly recalled a rumor about Westland.

– It was said that Westland was home to the world's largest mountain. Known as High West, it was rumored to be connected to a legendary Sky Island.

He looked at Octavia suspiciously.

"You… don't tell me…!"

The legend of Sky Islands persisted, though most dismissed it as a mere myth. But Octavia knew they existed. She had even been to one.

The giant shrimp continued to climb, carrying their ship past the mountain's midway point and into the clouds that shrouded the peak.

The inside of the cloud was filled with water, like an underwater world. After what felt like an eternity, they emerged from the cloud.

The shrimp slowed down and gently placed the ship on the surface of a sea of clouds. It then disappeared beneath the waves, vanishing into the depths.

"Gah… Cough… Cough… Ha… Ha… A-Are we alive…?"

The captain had managed to cling to the ship, but several crew members had been thrown off during the ascent and were nowhere to be seen.

Octavia, unfazed, gathered her wet hair and tied it back, observing their surroundings.

They were seven thousand meters above sea level, in a region known as the White Sea. The peak of High West was still above them, but the air was already thin.

The pirates were stunned that a giant shrimp had carried them to such a height. They were speechless. Octavia pointed her finger towards the distance, and a flash of lightning erupted, scattering the clouds.

A moment later, a deafening roar echoed through the sky, shaking the ship.

"W-What was that?!"

"Head in that direction. This isn't the peak yet."

Ignoring the smell of burnt air, the pirates obeyed, steering their ship through the unfamiliar landscape of the sea of clouds.

They reached another mountain.

They were now near the peak of High West. To go further, they had to climb another river.

"Raise the sails. The updrafts will carry us upwards."

Octavia didn't know the specifics, but she knew how to climb.

They raised the sails and, guided by the wind, began circling upwards, following the river.

They reached the summit, and the pirates stared at the massive cloud that loomed overhead.

"What is that…? Riding on clouds was strange enough, but this is…"

Several cloud paths, seemingly defying gravity, led upwards towards the massive cloud. They felt solid, almost springy, when touched.

They could climb these paths to reach the top. But few were large enough to accommodate a ship. Only a handful of paths, connected to the river, extended downwards.

"A few of you, disembark and go to that altar."

"Altar?"

Octavia pointed towards an ancient-looking altar.

The pirates, confused, climbed down and stood on the altar, looking around, unsure of what to do.

– Suddenly, a massive sea serpent emerged from the river and swallowed them whole.

"Wha–?!"

The serpent, larger than their ship, seemed unsatisfied. It turned towards them, its tongue flicking in and out. It disappeared back into the river, and a moment later, the ship began to shake violently.

"A sea serpent… under our ship?!"

"Is it going to carry us to the top?!"

The pirates panicked, but Octavia simply stood calmly on the rocking deck.

The serpent, carrying their ship, breached the massive cloud and emerged into another sea of clouds. It gently placed the ship on the surface, then disappeared beneath the waves.

They were now ten thousand meters above sea level, in a region known as the White White Sea.

It was a place rarely reached by those from the surface. While there were several ways to reach it, climbing High West required sacrifices.

"Is this… a Sky Island…?"

"Yes. The massive cloud above High West is solid enough to walk on. These islands are generally called 'Sky Islands'."

There were several Sky Islands, and Octavia's destination was a different one… but information about Sky Islands was scarce.

It was the perfect place for her to train, to find powerful opponents and steal their techniques.

She could reach it alone, but having sacrifices made the journey faster. Obtaining these pirates had been a fortunate coincidence.

The captain, pointing a gun at her, spoke.

"You… You knew what would happen if we went to the altar, didn't you?!"

"Yes. That serpent, for some reason, will carry a ship to the top if you offer it a few sacrifices."

Those who climbed High West always lost comrades. This was the reason.

"It's a simple task to reach the top alone. But this was a convenient shortcut."

"You sacrificed my crew… for such a reason…! You bastard–"

He pulled the trigger – and his upper body exploded.

"You're no use to me now. Choose to either die or run away."

Traveling between Sky Islands was simple. They simply had to wait for the floating islands to intersect, or create "Island Clouds" and use the wind to travel.

Either way, it was something Octavia could do alone. She didn't need these pirates anymore – but even if they chose to run, they had no way of descending. Their options were limited.

The pirates drew their weapons, glaring at Octavia, their last hope a desperate gamble.

"You choose to fight – Then show me your full strength!"

They were left behind, their supplies plundered, their bodies littering the deck of the empty ship that would drift aimlessly across the sea of clouds. Only the sound of thunder echoed through the vast sky, all traces of life vanished.

– Her destination was Birka, a Sky Island said to be inhabited by powerful sky warriors.

Seeking only strength, Octavia traversed the sea of clouds.

– Fight me, Kanata!

That day, Hachinosu trembled.

Two titans clashed in the training grounds Kanata used, and after a day or two, the victor was decided.

Kanata emerged victorious. Her opponent, Douglas Bullet, the "Demon Heir", lay defeated on the ground.

He was shirtless and covered in sweat; his breathing ragged. Kanata, in contrast, was unharmed, not a single scratch marred her skin.

"You've grown stronger, but you're still lacking. Your fists are full of… hesitation."

"…Hesitation?"

"I've heard about your rampages. When Roger fell ill, you trained alone, consumed by frustration. Even now, you haven't come to terms with your emotions."

"…"

Bullet glared at her, his Haki still radiating outwards, his anger undiminished.

Kanata shrugged. "Don't be so angry."

Perhaps he couldn't put his feelings into words. Roger, who had always seemed invincible, was now succumbing to an incurable disease. For Bullet, whose sole goal was to surpass Roger, it was an unforgivable injustice.

He had joined Roger's crew to understand his strength, and had learned that Roger, while incredibly powerful, sometimes held back to protect his comrades.

The presence of comrades could weaken one's strength.

Roger had said that his strength came from his comrades, but Bullet couldn't accept that. He pushed himself to his limits, seeking to become the strongest, and challenged Roger to a final battle – and lost.

"…Roger said that his strength came from his comrades."

"That's the kind of man he is."

"But he also held back to protect them… You do the same, don't you?"

"Yes."

Kanata agreed, sitting down on a chair made of ice.

"It's unnecessary. To me, strength is something that exists only within myself."

"That's one way to think about it."

"…I don't understand… Why couldn't I defeat Roger?"

There were differences between Roger and Bullet – their experience, their fighting styles, the battles they had faced. But even then, Bullet couldn't accept that he was truly weaker.

"Strength in solitude" – that was Bullet's core belief.

He had been influenced by Roger and his crew, but he had already regained the instincts he had honed during his years alone. Even then, he couldn't imagine himself defeating Roger.

"…I don't understand… Why couldn't I defeat Roger?! You must know something! Tell me, Kanata!"

"…The difference between you and Roger is obvious. He uses his strength to protect. You simply seek strength for its own sake."

"…What?!"

"Your goal is to be the strongest. Roger's is different. He's strong, but he didn't become strong because he wanted to be strong."

He became strong to protect his comrades. Their motivations were fundamentally different.

It didn't matter if it was to protect someone or to kill someone. Simply seeking strength for its own sake limited one's potential.

"Why do you seek strength?"

"Why…?"

"Everything has a reason. What do you want to achieve with your strength? Why did you decide to become strong?"

"What do I… want…?"

He wouldn't be betrayed if he was alone. Betrayal had been a constant in his life… Even Douglas, the admiral who had taken him in, had betrayed him.

If he trusted someone, he would be betrayed. But his own strength would never betray him.

He had started fighting when he was taken in by Admiral Douglas and forced to participate in war as a child soldier. He fought to obtain medals, awarded for valor, and was betrayed by his fellow child soldiers. That's when he realized that his own carelessness, his arrogance, his trust in others, were his weaknesses.

The stronger he was, the more freedom he had. Only strength could guarantee his freedom.

"…"

"…I think you understand now."

"Yeah."

Bullet stood up. His hesitation was gone. His Haki felt different, more refined.

"Fufu, that's a good look for you."

Haki was the power of belief, the strength of one's will. Hesitation would only cloud it. Bullet understood instinctively. Kanata admired his thirst for strength.

"Do you want to join my crew?"

"…What?"

"I can get you anything you want. Wealth, fame, power… What do you desire?"

"I want… freedom."

He had been picked up as an orphan in Galtzburg and raised as a child soldier. All the children raised like him were called "Bullets".

Admiral Douglas, recognizing Bullet's strength, had adopted him. He was designated "Number Nine" among the Bullets under the military's control. He fought, conquered enemy nations, and dreamed of a life free from battle – then Douglas betrayed him.

But things were different now. He had the strength to obtain freedom. He didn't know what to do, what path to take… but he wanted to try. He wanted to pursue the "freedom" that Roger had sought. Perhaps then, he would understand the secret of Roger's strength.

"…I see."

"That's why I won't join your crew. I'm going to travel the world, like Roger… If I decide I want to stay with you after that, I'll consider it."

"Fufu… You're quite arrogant. But fine, you're always welcome."

Kanata chuckled, sensing that Bullet, who had been lost, had finally found his path. She turned and headed back to her room. She had been fighting all day. She needed some rest.

"Wait, Kanata." Bullet called out to her.

"I'm going to search for 'freedom'… but I can't simply abandon my past. I'll continue to seek strength."

"That's fine. It's better to have a broader perspective than to be fixated on a single person like Roger."

"So I'll defeat you eventually."

There were a few individuals in this sea who held the title of "strongest".

Kanata was one of them. Bullet's words were only natural.

Kanata, still facing away, smiled.

"I'll be waiting."

Her words were simple, but carried weight. She was one of the strongest, an insurmountable wall – and she welcomed his challenge.

Only someone with absolute confidence in their strength could say such a thing.

Bullet finally understood why Roger liked her. He watched as Kanata walked away, then picked up his jacket and headed for the harbor.

He had once sought "freedom". But he had only known the battlefield. To him, everything else was unknown.

There had been those on Roger's crew who had tried to explain, but he still couldn't grasp the concept of "a peaceful life free from battle" that Admiral Douglas had spoken of.

What was "freedom"?

"…I don't know."

But he would search for it. Just like Roger had sought a treasure that might not even exist, sailing to the ends of the world.

Bullet decided to search for his own "freedom" across the vast sea.
