Chapter 43 - Is It Still Possible?
“Sorry, Ms. Jiang, we are very sorry about your situation. However, the school system has already closed the transfer channel, and all students have been assigned to their classes. If you want to make a transfer, you may have to wait until next year to see if you can change your major,” the person on the other end replied regretfully.
Jiang Hui was also very disappointed to hear this news, as it meant that things were basically irreversible. However, she thought that perhaps she should try a little harder… maybe there could be a turn of events?
After receiving the gentle assurance from the teacher in the academic office, Jiang Hui had to give up her previous thoughts.
The other person seemed to feel a bit sorry to see her “lost” expression and added, “Or you could consult the academic office after the semester starts. I will also report your situation to the education committee to see if I can help you with a transfer. But the chances are slim. You should be mentally prepared for that, student.”
…Actually, that last part didn’t need to be said. Jiang Hui thought for a moment and felt that it was better not to place too much hope on something so uncertain. Recognizing reality sooner would be better for her, wouldn’t it?
However, the teacher was clearly well-meaning, and Jiang Hui naturally expressed her gratitude. After asking a few more questions related to her enrollment, she softly thanked the teacher and hung up the communication device.
After closing the communication window, Jiang Hui couldn’t help but let out a long sigh.
What to do? This has become quite a predicament…
As she had anticipated, once the transfer opportunity was missed, there would be no chance for a late registration. Although the school felt regretful about her unexpected injury, they could not make an exception and reopen the school system. Not to mention that making such changes in the backend and reallocating resources would be quite troublesome; a more important point was that it would set a bad precedent.
If this unfortunate start were to become a norm, what would happen if every student started making similar requests?
Thus, when it came to the admission ranking, Beska Intermediate College was striving to uphold strict rules and fairness, maintaining a very good atmosphere, and there had been hardly any reports of bad behavior.
Since Jiang Hui missed the time to change her major, the system automatically assigned her to a military major and even selected the specific program for her. In fact, there was no real choice; military programs were quite popular, and there were not many spots left, all filled to capacity, so she could only go with the default option.
Jiang Hui was assigned to the Mecha Infantry Department… well, it was clearly a passionate and intense major, specifically for interstellar warriors.
However, Jiang Hui didn’t have that kind of ambition. The girl found it a bit absurd.
This was her second blow after realizing she couldn’t change her major. There were dozens of military-related programs, and even within logistics, there were over a dozen sub-specialties, which might have been a bit more manageable if she had chosen one of those.
But unfortunately, none of these military sub-specialties had available spots. Each year, many candidates applied for these sub-specialties at Beska Intermediate College, making them extremely competitive.
For military family members with established quotas, they could only choose a specialty within military programs if they passed a small test before the transition; otherwise, they would be assigned to other majors.
Only larger categories like the Infantry Department or Mecha Manufacturing Department had openings… but actually, there weren’t many spots available there either; they just had the most students, and thus the most teaching resources. So this year, military family members assigned to military programs were almost all placed in the Infantry Department.
That was how Jiang Hui ended up in the Combat Infantry Department, completely pushed forward without any choice in the matter.
At first, Jiang Hui tried to comfort herself that it might not be as terrifying as she imagined. At fifteen or sixteen, how much could she really learn about combat? Surely it would just be some theoretical knowledge or superficial skills. Little did she know that after searching online for keywords and watching related student training videos, she just wanted to lie down.
This was the kind of situation that would lead her to change schools. Would it still be possible to change schools and majors now?
Earlier, she had already understood what kind of militaristic era this interstellar world was—a time of military prosperity, where many young people were willing to dedicate themselves to the military and expand the frontiers of the universe.
Moreover, the interstellar military didn’t just select from adults; they started training children early. It was said that from elementary schools, many specialized mecha and combat classes were established. Intermediate schools began to differentiate and specialize further, clearly separating students with job intentions from those needed in society, concentrating training on them. Only then would the top talents be selected for military academies… and beyond that, there would still be further selections involving more in-depth military and political systems, which remained unknown for now.
Jiang Hui was now on the borderline of the second type of education. The age range of 15 to 18 in intermediate schools is a critical period for teenagers’ growth and the formation of their worldview, so concentrated training naturally requires being “quick, precise, and ruthless,” adopting extremely strict militarized management.
In other words, if Jiang Hui entered the Infantry Department, she must be mentally prepared to be integrated into this militarized management system.
Well, simply put, she was preparing to… become a soldier.
Understanding the connection, Jiang Hui felt utterly disoriented.
This was completely different from what she had imagined. She just wanted to live a peaceful and leisurely life until old age—why did she have to go through this?
Jiang Hui felt that since arriving in the interstellar world, the greatest misfortune had engulfed her.
—Oh heavens! Not only did she have to return to school, but she also had to be a “new recruit.” Couldn’t they at least give her a way out?!
Jiang Hui buried her head under the blankets, and by the time night fell and it was time for bed, she still hadn’t regained her composure, causing her to forget about the existence of the spiritual space that night, leading to yet another sleepless night.
When she woke up in the morning, although Jiang Hui had slept well in every sense, her spirit was even worse, and she looked exhausted.
When the communication from the holographic device came through, she hadn’t even realized she needed to adjust her state.
“Hello, may I ask if this is Ms. Jiang Hui? Sorry to disturb you, this is the re-examination center of the district hospital, and I’m the nurse, Sang Sang. How are you feeling today… is everything alright?” After seeing her expression, the last part of the question seemed to come with some hesitation.
Upon hearing it was from the hospital, Jiang Hui’s muddled mind finally became a bit clearer: “Oh, oh, I see. Sorry, I was a bit groggy. Is there something I can help you with?”
The other party seemed to relax a bit. In fact, just now, seeing Jiang Hui’s fatigued appearance nearly startled her; she thought this discharged patient was feeling unwell, given how pale she looked. It turned out she just hadn’t fully woken up, but this girl’s condition seemed quite poor, indicating that the damage to her brain was quite significant.
Although the nurse had filled in a lot of unrelated details in her mind based on Jiang Hui’s condition, the verbal procedures were still followed…
“Did you forget? Tomorrow is your re-examination day, and you need to go back to the district hospital for a check-up. I’m here to confirm the time with you. What time will you be available tomorrow morning? Also, Mr. Calet from our hospital has been quite busy lately and may not be able to make it for your appointment. Would you be okay with another senior therapist conducting your re-examination…?”
