Chapter 109: Chapter 43: Kakuzu's Narrow Escape
Boom!
A powerful punch slammed down, sending up a massive spray of water.
Kisame leapt to dodge, but as soon as he landed, several stone spears shot toward him—an attack from Kurotsuchi on the other side.
"What a hassle!" Kisame growled, swinging Samehada to shatter the stone spears. Before he could catch his breath, a massive yellow rock dragon surged through the water, coiling like a predator. As it reached Kisame, it lunged out of the water, snapping at his legs.
"Water Style: Water Bullet Jutsu!" Kisame spat out high-pressure water projectiles, shattering the rock dragon. Taking advantage of the opening, he jumped to the side.
"Looks like I have no choice but to use that technique," he muttered, shaking his head. "Honestly, this isn't my preferred style of fighting."
Raising two fingers to his chest, Kisame performed a hand seal. "Hidden Mist Jutsu!"
"Ah, of course!" Deidara, observing from a distance, slapped his forehead. "I almost forgot—he's from Kirigakure, one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. No way he'd lack such a signature move."
A thick white mist rolled in, greatly obscuring vision and sensory perception. At least now Kisame wouldn't have to fend off the relentless barrage from every angle.
"Kurotsuchi, Akatsuchi, fall back!" Ōnoki called down from above.
As he weaved hand seals, an enormous circular slab of rock descended from the sky. Splash! It hit the water, floating silently like an island in the middle of the lake.
"The enemy might not stay on the surface—they could dive underwater. Stand on the rock!"
Ōnoki's words hit their mark. Kisame clicked his tongue in irritation; his plan to attack from below the water had been exposed.
"Well, this makes it more interesting," he said with a smirk. "Water Release: A Thousand Feeding Sharks!"
A horde of enormous sharks materialized around Kisame, their sheer numbers forming an endless, tightly packed swarm.
"They're coming!"
On the floating rock, Kurotsuchi felt the shift in the water. The swarm's approach caused the rock to shake violently, as if it were a fragile boat in a raging storm.
"Earth Release: Earth Spear!" Kurotsuchi pressed her hands to the ground, causing sharp stone spikes to erupt below, skewering the advancing sharks.
"This trick won't work on me twice," Kisame sneered. Forming another hand seal, he thrust his hands forward.
"Water Style: Great Shark Bullet!"
A colossal shark, the apex of its kind, surged forward with its jaws wide open. It crashed into the floating rock with devastating force, shattering it into fragments.
"Take this!" Kisame seized the momentary chaos to strike, slashing Akatsuchi with Samehada. Akatsuchi countered with a stone fist, but Kisame backed off, kicking him away.
As Samehada absorbed Akatsuchi's chakra, it shivered with delight and grew larger.
"Not bad," Kisame remarked.
"Akatsuchi, are you okay?" Kurotsuchi asked, concern in her voice. Akatsuchi clutched his stomach, a clear wound marking the spot where Samehada had struck.
"Careful," Akatsuchi warned. "That sword drained half my chakra in an instant."
The realization of Kisame's ability—the terrifying chakra absorption—was a game-changer.
"Father, let's handle this together," Kurotsuchi called up to Ōnoki. "Akatsuchi and I can't take him on alone."
Ōnoki slowly descended, locking eyes with Kisame.
"You're a formidable opponent. Let this old man take care of you."
Meanwhile, as Kisame's battle raged on, Deidara had quietly infiltrated the Iwagakure prison.
He had expected resistance, but to his surprise, the guards and prisoners were all either dead or unconscious, many clearly under a genjutsu.
"Genjutsu… Damn it, it's Obito!"
Realizing the implications, Deidara broke into a sprint toward the high-security wing. Obito must have taken matters into his own hands after Ōnoki decided to imprison Kakuzu and Hidan rather than execute them.
Reaching the innermost chamber, Deidara saw Kakuzu, reduced to a single heart, bound to a pillar. Across from him stood Obito, calmly dispatching guards with a kunai.
"Uchiha Itachi?" Kakuzu narrowed his eyes at the intruder, who wore the Akatsuki cloak and possessed the Sharingan.
"I'm not him," Obito replied flatly.
"Who cares who you are!" Hidan's disembodied head yelled from across the room. "You're wearing our uniform, so you must be here to bust us out. Get on with it!"
Obito ignored him, approaching Kakuzu with a kunai in hand as if to free him.
But Kakuzu's instincts screamed danger. The figure's demeanor wasn't that of a rescuer—it was of an executioner.
"You're here to kill us, aren't you?" Kakuzu growled.
"Fool!" Hidan barked. "Of course he's not—he's one of us!"
"Idiot," Kakuzu muttered. "If you're here to kill me, get on with it. I've lived long enough."
"Goodbye, Kakuzu," Obito said as he plunged the kunai toward Kakuzu's heart.
Boom!
An explosion forced Obito into his intangibility. The kunai passed harmlessly through Kakuzu, who remained unharmed.
"Deidara," Obito sighed as he turned to face the bomber.
"You and your sneaky little games," Deidara snapped. "I can't stand you!"
"Join me, Deidara," Obito said calmly. "Together, we can create a world without conflict. Forget about Nagato's dreams."
"Shut up!" Deidara shot back. "Your so-called perfect world is a sham, and I won't betray my allies!"
"Then we're enemies now," Obito said with feigned regret.
"We've been enemies since the day you started scheming!" Deidara snarled.
