Chapter 105 - Divine Cat Mii-chan Climbs a Tree
105 Divine Cat Mii-chan Climbs a Tree
Roo from the Azure Dragon’s Roar and Tim from the Darkfang are out scouting the area.
In the meantime, let’s prepare dinner. Using the large pot Muller provided, I’m making cream stew with plenty of wild bird meat we hunted and mushrooms collected by Yuri.
Shayna and Laura are grilling meat from the rabbit monster, Rapido. It’s shaping up to be quite a luxurious meal.
It looks like Roo and Tim are back.
“There don’t seem to be any goblins around here.”
“That means we’re outside their territory.”
This area seems to be a midpoint between the goblin territory and other monsters’ territory.
Now that everyone is gathered, let’s have dinner. I distribute the stew and bread to everyone. Jill from the Azure Dragon’s Roar and Lars the beastman from the Darkfang will stay on guard at the entrance and eat there.
I give Mii-chan some cat food and serve stew to Sera and Lu-kun. Perro is stationed in front of the stew pot.
“Let’s eat!”
“Mii.”
“Let’s eat, nya.”
“Nyaa.”
“Gau.”
Roo is distributing the grilled meat to everyone.
“You’re a little one too, aren’t you? I’m also called Roo, so let’s get along, okay?”
“Gau, gau!”
Lu-kun is licking Roo while Perro licks the plate. It’s quite confusing…
“I saw a light in the northwest direction. It’s probably a goblin settlement.”
Tim, who went out scouting with Roo, is explaining to everyone.
“Shall we head there tomorrow?”
“Hmmm, how did you confirm that, Tim?”
“I climbed a tall tree and checked.”
“Do you think I can climb it?”
“If we help, even Nero might be able to climb.”
“If that’s the case, I’ll climb the tree early tomorrow morning to confirm the position. If we can verify it, there’s no need to get too close.”
“Leave it to me.”
Dinner is over, and we clean up. Perro and Sera cleaned up the stew nicely.
With many people on night watch, it will be two people at a time for an hour and a half each. Since they didn’t initially include me in the count, I informed them that Perro, Sera, and I would be a team, and I ended up on the first watch. Although I might not be very useful, Perro and Sera are quite capable.
Mii-chan and Lu-kun can rest.
“Mii…”
“Gau.”
Both seem reluctant, so I asked them to cheer everyone up instead of keeping watch. Mii-chan immediately entered work mode and, with Lu-kun in tow, walked over to everyone, shaking her hips. As expected of Mii-chan, the professional.
It’s still too early to sleep, and Jill and the others are on watch at the entrance, so I review the map skills from today’s investigation. I also noted down water sources and landmarks. We’re moving along the eastern edge of goblin territory from north to south.
I estimate it will take less than two days to reach the foot of the mountain.
Well then, time to start the watch. I head to the entrance with Perro and Sera and let them rest while I take over.
I pet Sera, who is in her black leopard form. Her shiny, smooth fur is incredible. When I scratched under her chin and around her neck, she seemed to enjoy it so much that she knocked me over and licked my face. In her black leopard form, Sera is too intimidating to resist. She’s cute as a black cat though.
Perro is calm, so I thought he might be sleeping, but he’s actually savoring the dried fruit one piece at a time. Perro never changes…
“Kunyukunyuku… It’s alright, nya. Gunyugunyu… I’m awake and watching, nya… Nom.”
Sera has her face resting on my leg, relaxing, so there shouldn’t be any monster presence nearby. I wonder how long I’ve been petting Sera. She twitched suddenly. Was it a monster? No, it’s Lars the beastman from Darkfang and Anya the cat beastman coming from the back.
“It’s time for the shift change.”
Has it already been that long? Time flies when you’re surrounded by fluff.
“Night snack, nya. Feel free to eat, nya.”
“Oh, sorry about that.”
Perro hands the dried fruit to Lars. It’s a rare sight. I wonder if it’s going to rain tomorrow; that would be unfortunate.
When I asked Perro on the way back to our sleeping area, it seems the dried fruit wasn’t to his taste. I understand now.
Mii-chan and Lu-kun are curled up together, sleeping. Sera is snuggling closer and wrapping them with her tail. Mii-chan and Lu-kun must be feeling completely safe.
Well then, time to sleep.
“Nero, not that way. Put your foot on the nearer part.”
“Is this the right way?”
“No, I said the nearer part. What do you plan to do next in that position?”
“Ugh, I’m dying! I can’t do this anymore! Help!”
“We’ve wrapped the rope around you. Even if you fall, we can pull you up, so there’s no problem. More importantly, hurry up and climb.”
“Mii.”
“Eek.”
Before dawn, Roo from the Azure Dragon’s Roar and Tim from Darkfang began climbing the tallest tree in the area, and it’s quite a challenge. Roo climbs smoothly with Mii-chan on his shoulder.
It seems Mii-chan was desperate to climb the tree, clinging to it from below, but it was obviously impossible. Seeing this, Roo put Mii-chan on his shoulder and…
“Don’t fall, little one.”
“Mii.”
Roo, with Mii-chan on his shoulder, is climbing the tree while instructing Tim and me.
After about thirty minutes, we finally reach the top of the tree.
“Mii.”
Mii-chan looks down at me with a smug expression as if saying, “You’re so slow.” But since it’s Mii-chan, I forgive her!
From up here, I can see the sun rising and several plumes of smoke rising in the distance.
“It seems to be a larger settlement than I thought.”
“It was hard to tell at night, but it seems that way.”
I note the settlement’s location on the map skill. It’s easier to see from above, but I’d rather not do it…
“Mii-chan, are you satisfied?”
“Mii.”
She looks delighted, but her tail is tightly wrapped around Roo. We’re about fifty meters above the ground. The wind sways us, which is a bit scary…
Sigh… time to come down.
“Why not use your atmospheric skill to glide down?”
“!?”
T-that’s impossible! I’d die… it would be disastrous…
Mii-chan, please stop looking at me with such hopeful eyes…
“Mii?”
