Chapter 35
Chapter Thirty-Five: Simulation – Sixteen Days Later, Investigating Dehydration Syndrome (Fourth Update)
“Miss Xia’er, I often hear my daughter speak of you; you can just call me Mr. Moss.”
To Xia’er’s surprise, Baron Hastings Moss seemed much easier to talk to than she had anticipated, perhaps due to the unusual reason she had been summoned.
“Amy told me you found a job at the police station?” Moss walked to the center of the study where several tables stood, gesturing slightly towards the sofa. “Sit wherever you like.”
“Yes, I work in the investigation department as an assistant to Miss Avina,” Xia’er replied truthfully, knowing that such information would likely be known to him anyway.
“Avina Fitzgerald?” Moss looked somewhat surprised.
“Yes, the one who lives at number 15,” Xia’er nodded.
“It seems you two get along quite well,” Moss chuckled.
“We’ve only spoken a few times.”
Moss did not deny this response.
Only a few conversations? How could you know where she lives if you’ve only spoken a few times?
“Did you not ask Miss Avina directly about the matters in Clock Tower Lane District?” Moss asked straightforwardly.
The answer to this question was crucial. If she answered correctly, she might learn what had happened in the Clock Tower Lane District. If she answered incorrectly, Moss would surely say nothing further.
“Tomorrow I am going with her to Clock Tower Lane District, but I didn’t inquire much further. Now, looking back, it feels a bit complicated,” Xia’er began, blending truth with deception.
“The Clock Tower Lane District can still be dangerous… Miss Xia’er, have you considered changing jobs?” Moss pondered for a moment before asking, “I heard you are interested in law. Would you be interested in working at the peace court?”
“My father is a justice of the peace, and he can help you,” added Amy, who had been sitting beside Moss, nodding vigorously in agreement.
No wonder Amy was so confident when inviting Xia’er earlier that she could secure a recommendation letter from the law academy… turns out her father is the chief justice of Borough City.
Moss, the baron, was speechless at his precious daughter’s confidence.
He felt as though he was watching his own cabbage being stolen by someone else whenever Xia’er was around. It seemed that whenever she was present, he became merely a tool.
However, Xia’er was indeed an excellent girl, both virtuous and academically proficient. Even among the top students at the Borough Private Academy, she stood out. Most importantly, she showed great interest in law, and her teachers praised her for her legal talent.
Aside from her humble background, she had no other flaws.
With some cultivation, and if she could mentor Amy, she might even help him cultivate two justices of the peace, thereby establishing connections in the legal world of An Su.
“Thank you, Mr. Moss, I am very willing,” Xia’er hesitated for a moment before saying, “but I have already received Avina’s salary, and I must help her complete her work this week.”
“No problem, come find me once you finish your work over there,” Moss nodded silently.
Even with better positions available, Xia’er remained steadfast in her commitment, a rare virtue indeed.
With the help of [Art of Conversation Lv.1], Moss grew increasingly appreciative of Xia’er.
He planned to assess her further. If Xia’er truly proved to be an excellent candidate, he would be willing to sponsor her and Amy to attend the same university. His daughter was wonderful in many ways, but she definitely needed someone outstanding to lead her in her studies.
“However, you should be careful. For now, it’s best not to go to Clock Tower Lane District. If you do go, make sure it’s with Avina’s company,” Moss thought for a moment and reminded her.
“What happened in Clock Tower Lane District?”
“Is it really about feelings?” Xia’er asked somewhat puzzled.
Mosher shook his head and said, “I don’t know exactly what happened, but a close friend advised me not to go, and I trust his judgment.”
“He mentioned some big trouble would come from the Heishuidang recently, and sure enough, the leader of the Heishuidang mysteriously died this morning.”
Predicting trouble for the Heishuidang… No wonder Xia’er’s mention of the Heishuidang was quickly dismissed by Mosher in the simulation.
Now, this mysterious person again predicts trouble in the Clock Tower Lane District… It seems something has indeed happened.
“Father… Father!” Amy heard about the danger in the Clock Tower Lane District and couldn’t help shaking Mosher’s arm anxiously, asking, “We have some houses near the police station, right? Can we rent one to Xia’er?”
Mosher: “…”
The person he once regarded as close seemed to be claimed by someone else now.
“Whatever,” Mosher rubbed his temples helplessly and said, “Go out and play, I still have some things to handle.”
“Thank you, Father!” Amy let go of Mosher’s arm and jumped over to Xia’er, pulling her hand and running out, “After the tea party ends, I’ll take you to see the house…”
Xia’er, being pulled away, felt something wasn’t quite right.
Was she… being taken care of by a wealthy woman?
Xia’er didn’t stay until the end of the tea party; instead, she made up an excuse about having some business and planned to return to the Clock Tower Lane District.
However, she had already arranged to see the house with Amy after the graduation ceremony tomorrow, so Amy didn’t seem too disappointed and started looking forward to tomorrow instead.
On her way back, Xia’er packed some An Su pear tart and almond macarons, spending about four shillings. Lichi liked nutty desserts, so she decided to bring them back for her to try.
Throughout the journey, Xia’er felt uneasy, as the information she gathered suggested potential dangers lurking in the Clock Tower Lane District.
No…
She needed to investigate before any danger occurred. The longer she waited, the more likely irreversible consequences might arise.
Perhaps due to walking too fast, she licked her lips, feeling a bit thirsty.
At the Clock Tower Church in the Clock Tower Lane District, Xia’er dropped two pence into the prayer box, repaying the goddess.
After quickly returning home in the Clock Tower Lane District, Xia’er placed the sweets on the table, hurried upstairs to her room, and opened her notebook.
[1. Record the investigation results with Aivana, preferably getting information from her about what exactly happened in the Clock Tower Lane District]
[2. When nearing the end of her employment, she could act overly towards Aivana to test if the pact is still effective. If it is, she wouldn’t feel any resistance]
[3. Tomorrow, ask her sister to take a day off and visit the graduation ceremony together, then go see the house. Once the location is confirmed, move in immediately that night and do everything possible to convince her sister to resign]
[4. Visit the Clock Tower Church daily to pray, hoping to encounter Yulis and observe any unusual activities in the church]
After writing these down, Xia’er put down her pencil and opened the system.
“Tomorrow: Day 16 (Sheng Year 741, July 4, 11:58 AM) (Consuming 10 Mortal Points)”
Sixteen days later…
Xia’er had never been this far into the future before.
“Tomorrow.”
“No. 2.”
As Xia’er silently repeated in her heart, a silver light enveloped her.
