"The Solarian Edge: Blade of the Astral Realm"

Chapter 7: chapter 7: Keep the momentum

Morning came with the crack of steel on steel. The camp was alive with the sounds of training—grunts, shouts, the occasional curse when someone miscalculated a swing. Today felt different, though. The air was sharper, charged with something unspoken.

Kaius stood in the training ring, rolling his shoulders as Eira called out his next opponent. When she spoke the name, a ripple went through the gathered soldiers.

Rael.

A veteran. Not the strongest, but the kind that didn't lose. More importantly, the kind who didn't believe in wasting time on people he didn't respect.

Rael stepped forward, rolling his wrist as he eyed Kaius with open disinterest. "This a joke?"

Eira's voice was flat. "It's a match."

Rael snorted but didn't argue. He took his stance, waiting for Kaius to move first.

Kaius had fought before. He had trained, endured, taken hits, and gotten back up. But as he faced Rael, he realized something. He had never fought someone who didn't care if he got back up at all.

The first strike came fast. A calculated, ruthless arc that sent Kaius skidding back. He barely managed to stay upright, dirt kicking up beneath his boots.

From the sidelines, Valen let out a low whistle. "Well. That's unfortunate."

Theo winced. "Think we should step in when he dies, or…?"

Kaius tuned them out. Focus.

Rael didn't let up. His movements were precise, each strike pushing Kaius exactly where he wanted him. Not even out of strategy—just out of habit. Like he wasn't even trying.

Kaius moved mechanically, blocking where he could, dodging when he couldn't. But it wasn't enough.

Another blow slammed into his side. He staggered.

Laughter from the onlookers. Not cruel—just inevitable. A foregone conclusion.

Something in Kaius tightened.

He wasn't angry. Not humiliated. Just… tired.

Tired of always reacting.

Rael came in for the finishing strike, a bored flick of his wrist—

And Kaius moved.

Not a block. Not a retreat. He shifted inside the strike, weight low, and for the first time, he struck back.

The impact cracked through the air.

Rael reeled, just slightly. Not enough to lose, but enough to notice.

Silence.

Kaius stood, breathing hard, waiting.

Rael exhaled sharply, shaking out his wrist. Then, without a word, he turned and walked off. Not impressed. Not dismissive. Just… acknowledging.

And that was new.

Eira watched from a distance, arms crossed. Her expression didn't change, but there was something in her gaze.

Kaius didn't look at her. He just stepped out of the ring, ignoring Valen's slow clap and Theo's stunned expression.

No victory. No defeat. Just something shifting, subtle and certain.

As he reached the edge of the training grounds, someone else was waiting.

A soldier he'd never spoken to. One of Rael's usual circle.

They didn't say anything. Just met his gaze.

And then, without a word, nodded.

For the first time, Kaius felt it.

A crack in the walls around him.

Something was changing.

The shift doesn't go unnoticed. Some are wary. Some are interested. And Eira? She decides it's time to test something else.
