Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The confusion in air
Eira sat in the dim glow of her chamber, fingers idly tracing the intricate carvings on her desk. The weight of the emperor's decree pressed against her chest, a suffocating force that refused to let her breathe. The name—Lord Castien Valreth—echoed in her mind like a cruel reminder of the path carved for her since birth.
As the sole heir of her family, she had long understood the responsibilities placed upon her. Strength, honor, duty—these principles had been drilled into her since childhood. And yet, none of them prepared her for this. Marriage was not simply a union of two individuals; it was a declaration of power, an unshakable political maneuver that would bind armies and alliances. With this marriage, her family's military strength would be tied to Castien's faction, shifting the balance of power in ways she had spent years avoiding.
Her hands clenched into fists. She had no choice. The emperor's word was law, and she was bound to follow it.
Outside the training grounds, Kaius moved through his morning drills, the rhythmic clash of steel against steel usually enough to ground him. But not today. His mind was restless, weighed down by an unfamiliar unease. He had only spent a short time here, yet in that time, he had found something he had never had before—people who saw him for more than his past, a place where his efforts meant something, and a feeling of belonging he never dared to hope for.
Now, it was slipping away.
He pushed harder, his strikes sharp and precise, but the frustration inside him refused to fade. He had spent his life surviving, expecting nothing. But now… now he had something to lose.
Theo grumbled as he watched from the sidelines, arms crossed. "You're going to break the damn blade if you keep swinging like that."
"He's got too much on his mind," Valen muttered, leaning against a nearby post. "We all do."
An uneasy silence settled between them before Valen suddenly clapped a hand on Theo's shoulder. "Come on, let's go to the tavern. Who knows how much longer we'll be together? Might as well make the most of it."
Theo scoffed. "Drowning our sorrows? That's your grand idea?"
Valen grinned. "It's the best I've got."
Kaius hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Fine."
The tavern was loud and bustling, but the three of them found a corner table, mugs in hand. Conversation flowed between drinks, growing looser with every passing round. They spoke of training, of old rivalries, of things they had once dreamed of. They laughed, they argued, but underneath it all was an unspoken truth—they didn't know what tomorrow would bring.
By the time they stumbled out onto the street, the moon was brilliant in the sky, casting silver light over the quiet roads. The cool night air did little to sober them, their steps uneven but their bond unshaken.
"You know," Theo slurred, "for a guy who used to be a pain in my ass, you're not so bad, Kaius."
Kaius smirked. "That's the ale talking."
Valen threw an arm around both of them. "No, he's right. I'd fight beside you any day."
For a fleeting moment, Kaius let himself believe it—that this, this feeling of belonging, could last. But deep down, he knew better.
Change was coming, and there was no stopping it.
