Chapter 9: The Village of Unity
The sun was dipping below the horizon as Rio, Retina, and Iris walked through the gates of Nightfall Village. A soft golden glow bathed the cobblestone streets, giving the bustling village a warm, welcoming aura. The air was filled with the mingling scents of roasted meat, fresh bread, and the faint sweetness of blooming flowers.
Nightfall was unlike any other village Rio had seen. It was a place where all races—humans, demi-humans, elves, and even beastkin—lived in harmony. The streets were lined with vibrant market stalls, and guild banners fluttered lazily in the evening breeze. Merchants called out to passersby, while children played joyfully in the square.
As they walked through the lively streets, a wave of familiarity washed over Rio. His eyes widened as his gaze traveled over the familiar layout of the village.
I know this place…
"I know this place!" Rio murmured, his voice filled with a mixture of surprise and nostalgia. "I played a game where this village had big shops, guilds, and crafters."
Retina nodded, her violet eyes scanning the surroundings with calm precision. "We should find a place to stay. It's already night."
Iris, walking beside Rio, wagged her tail slightly but kept her ears perked and her eyes alert. She sensed something—something familiar, though she couldn't place it.
Planning for the Days Ahead
Rio glanced at his inventory screen, a small holographic display appearing before his eyes. The glowing numbers showed their current balance—10,000 Des—the currency of the Kingdom of Eldazia.
"We have enough to stay in a hotel for two days while we earn more by completing quests," Rio said, feeling a bit more at ease.
Retina gave him a small, reassuring smile. "Good. And if you evolve, Rio," she added softly, "you'll get even stronger."
Her words stirred a sense of determination within him. He was getting stronger, but there was still a long way to go.
As they moved through the village, Rio's eyes landed on a cozy-looking inn with a wooden sign that read:
The Resting Ember
"This looks promising," Rio said, motioning toward the inn.
A Warm Welcome
The trio stepped inside the inn, greeted by the warm glow of lanterns and the scent of freshly baked bread. The wooden interior was inviting, with comfortable chairs arranged around a crackling fireplace. A kind-looking elf woman stood behind the counter, her long, silver hair flowing gracefully over her shoulders.
"Good evening, madam and sir," the receptionist said with a warm smile. "We currently have only one room available, but it includes food and a bath. The cost is 100 Des per night."
Rio placed 300 Des on the counter without hesitation. "We'll take it for three days."
The receptionist bowed politely before handing him a small, engraved key. "Thank you! This will be your room."
A Place to Rest
The room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bed, a small table, and a private bath tucked into the corner. The soft glow of enchanted lanterns filled the room, giving it a peaceful ambiance.
Rio let out a sigh of relief as he set his sword down and stretched his tired limbs. "This should do."
Retina sat down gracefully on the edge of the bed, her violet eyes scanning the room with quiet satisfaction. Iris, however, was already curled up near the corner, her tail lazily wagging as her eyes grew heavy.
For the first time in a while, they could finally rest.
