Chapter 27: A Shelter Under the Moonlight
The distant echo of the ship's horn faded into the mist as Rio, Retina, and Iris stood at the edge of the eerie shoreline. The last rays of the sun painted the horizon in hues of deep orange and purple, casting long shadows over the barren land.
"Looks like we won't be going back anytime soon," Rio murmured, his gaze fixed on the vanishing ship.
A cool breeze swept through the air, carrying the unsettling chill of the Land of Undeads. The ground beneath their feet felt dry and cracked, devoid of life. Sparse, dead trees stood like forgotten sentinels, their twisted branches clawing at the darkening sky.
"The sun's almost gone," Iris whispered, her silver eyes narrowing as she glanced toward the horizon. "We shouldn't stay out in the open after dark."
"Agreed," Rio nodded. "But where do we stay?"
Retina stepped forward, her crimson eyes glowing faintly in the twilight. "Leave that to me."
She knelt on the ground, her hands brushing over the dirt. A low, melodic hum resonated in the air as she began chanting an incantation.

Shimmering runes spread outward from her fingertips, forming intricate patterns that pulsed with gentle light. The earth trembled as thick roots sprouted from the ground, weaving together like threads of silk. Slowly, the roots solidified, rising higher and taking shape.
Within moments, a sturdy house stood before them. The structure was crafted from a blend of enchanted wood and stone, its walls adorned with ancient glyphs to ward off evil. The windows glowed softly, and a warm aura emanated from within.
"Whoa…" Rio's eyes widened in awe. "You've been holding out on us, Retina."
Retina stood up, a proud smile tugging at her lips. "I've been practicing. It's not just a house—it's protected by magic. Nothing undead can cross its threshold."
Iris wagged her tail approvingly. "Smart. I like it."
As they stepped inside, the interior was just as impressive. The living space was cozy, with plush cushions and warm lights that seemed to glow naturally. A fireplace crackled softly, adding a touch of comfort in this desolate land. Three rooms branched off from the main hall, providing enough space for them to rest.
"Not bad," Rio said, stretching his arms. "This will do for the night."
Retina's eyes glinted playfully. "You'll thank me even more when you see what I stocked the kitchen with."
Rio chuckled, but beneath his amusement, he felt the weight of the journey ahead. The Land of Undeads was a place of mystery and danger, and tomorrow would bring its own set of challenges.
But for now, they had shelter, safety, and a moment of peace.
"Let's get some rest," Rio said softly. "Tomorrow… we face whatever this land throws at us."
As the moon rose high into the night sky, the trio settled in, unaware of the ominous presence that stirred beyond the protective barrier, watching… waiting.
