Sleep Walk
Chapter 30 : Sleep Walk
Joy looked up at Chris, she felt a rush of warmth flooding through her, her cheeks flushing with color. In that moment, amidst the playful banter and gentle teasing, she realized just how much she cherished their bond and the depth of her feelings for him.
Meanwhile, across the city in his upscale restaurant, Robert was in the throes of a furious tantrum. The elegant surroundings did little to calm his seething anger as he paced back and forth, his frustration palpable.
"Melpomene failed me!" he roared, slamming his fist onto a pristine marble countertop, causing the silverware to clatter. The staff and patrons, usually accustomed to his composed demeanor, watched in uneasy silence, sensing the storm brewing within him.
His mind raced, consumed by thoughts of how Joy had slipped through his grasp once again. The failure of his trusted enforcer gnawed at him, each passing moment fueling his rage further. As he fumed, the normally serene ambiance of the restaurant was overshadowed by his volatile outburst, casting a dark cloud over the evening.
A tall man with dark hair, impeccably dressed in a tailored suit, sat nearby, his serious expression contrasting sharply with Robert's fury. He watched Robert's outburst with a calm, measured demeanor before finally speaking.
"Are you still not satisfied?" he asked, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. "Melpomene failed to bring the girl to you. So, what now?"
Robert's face contorted with rage, his voice rising as he snapped at the man. "Fuck off, Gary! Do you have any idea how much money I poured into this operation to get that girl?" His fist slammed onto the table, rattling the cutlery "And now Melpomene has failed me!"
Gary shook his head and sighed, his expression a mix of frustration and resignation. "My sources tell me Melpomene slipped through the police's grasp," he said evenly. "So, do you want him to continue the mission? Or should we hire another Seeker? But think about it—how many Seekers have we already employed, only to see them fail? How much more time and money can we afford to waste without results?"
His words were laced with a calm but pointed skepticism, challenging Robert to reconsider his strategy.
Robert clenched his fists, his knuckles whitening with the intensity of his frustration. "Hiring Seekers is nearly impossible," he growled. "They want nothing to do with illegal activities."
Gary sighed once more, a hint of exasperation in his eyes. "Then you're at an impasse," he said calmly. "You'll have to wait for Melpomene to come through, or hope for someone else capable of bringing Joy to you. Perhaps it's not such a bad idea to bide your time. After all, she is the daughter of the Dela Cruz family, and her beauty is truly irresistible." His words were laced with a mix of pragmatism and veiled admiration, underscoring the complexity of their pursuit.
Robert's expression suddenly shifted from anger to stark fear. "Dela Cruz?" he stammered, his voice trembling. "She's a Dela Cruz?!"
Gary nodded, his gaze steady and unyielding. "Yes, she's the daughter of Jude Dela Cruz, the richest man in Asia. You need to tread carefully, Robert. Getting entangled with her could bring more trouble than you can handle."
Robert's face went pale, a mix of fear and panic overtaking him. "Why didn't you tell me this sooner?! This could ruin me! I'm as good as dead!" he exclaimed, his voice cracking with desperation.
Gary chuckled softly, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I assumed you already knew she was Jude Dela Cruz's daughter. Why else would you hire someone as formidable as Melpomene to capture her? You really need to be more careful, Robert. Ignorance in our line of work can be deadly."
"Gary, help me!" Robert pleaded, his voice tinged with desperation as he turned to his trusted associate for guidance and support.
Gary let out a heavy sigh, his expression grave. "What do you want me to do, Robert?" he asked, his voice tinged with resignation. "I can't help you. The Dela Cruz family wields more power and influence than even my own."
"This is a mistake!" Robert exclaimed, his voice filled with frustration and regret. "I didn't know she was a Dela Cruz!"
Gary rolled his eyes, a gesture of exasperation at Robert's sudden realization. "Of course you didn't know," he remarked dryly. "How could you? You hired Melpomene without bothering to investigate her family background. You've only got yourself to blame for this mess."
Suddenly, a sharp rap on the restaurant's door pierced the tense atmosphere, interrupting the heated conversation between Robert and Gary.
